    Montevetrano

Montevetrano was founded 25 years ago by Silvia Imperato, a photographer who developed a passion for wine after one of her favourite subjects invited her to a wine tasting group in Rome. Her family had a piece of land in Salerno, and she decided with the help of consulting oenologist Riccardo Cotarella to make wine. The idea was to make Bordeaux wines with a local touch – a sort of “Sassicaia of the South”. Production started very small – 6000 bottles per year – and when the wine started to sell out every year this was increased to 30000. What makes this estate rather special today is that they have always put all of their energies in to making just one wine (until recently when a pure Aglianico was added to the range), and they have stocks of nearly every vintage they have ever made. This makes for a rare and exciting opportunity to put together a vertical offer with impeccable provenance, the wines coming straight from the estate, pre-aged. Though the wines were always more Bordeaux than Campania, typically 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Aglianico, from 2010 there was a shift towards using more Aglianico as temperatures were increasing, making it more difficult to produce the quality that they wanted from the Bordeaux grapes. The new style is very exciting, showing a more linear quality and reminiscent of the wines further north in Piedmont. The future is very bright at the estate, but in the meantime we are very pleased to have some mature vintages to offer (and to drink!)

Montevetrano di Silvia Imparato Colli di Salerno 2002 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (92)

The 2002 Montevetrano is another of the surprises in this tasting. The vintage was cold and damp, as it was throughout Italy, leading to a late September harvest, which is unusual here. There is a wild, unrestrained quality to the 2002 I find very appealing. Grilled herbs, blackberries, leather and spices flow from the glass. This is likely to always remain a rather firm wine, but it also has the freshness to age beautifully in the coming years. In this context the 2002 suffers a bit from the surrounding vintages, but it will be wonderful on its own, especially at the dinner table.

Montevetrano di Silvia Imparato Colli di Salerno 2003 (1x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

The 2003 Montevetrano is one of the revelations in this tasting. Layers of dark, baritone fruit form the building blocks, followed by suggestions of leather, spices and earthiness that add richness and complexity. Incisive and muscular throughout, the 2003 impresses for its overall sense of balance, something that was very hard to come by in this torrid vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025.

Montevetrano di Silvia Imparato Colli di Salerno 2005 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (93)

Imparato's 2005 Montevetrano is a medium-bodied, somewhat slender version of this wine. It offers a compelling array of crushed flowers, spices, graphite, cracked pepper and jammy blackberries. Today it comes across as less complex than the 2004, but it still very tightly wound and may merit a higher score in the future. Montevetrano is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Aglianico.

Deep purple-ruby. Rich aromas of dark plum, black currant, cedar, graphite and minerals on the captivating nose. Then clean, fresh and juicy, offering flavors similar to the aromas and an extremely refined mouthfeel. Licorice and violet elements feature on the long, graceful, multilayered finish.
