    • Georges Mugneret Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 1996 (1x75cl)

      Vinous (93+)

The 1996 Ruchottes-Chambertin was cropped at just 27hl/ha. Now with 21 years on the clock, atypical for this vintage, it has a sensual bouquet with scents of red fruit, cassis, quince and violet, though with continued aeration it develops a subtle earthiness. The palate is marked by very fine tannin, well judged acidity and quite a structured second half. This is still quite backward, but there is something very stylish here and for those with extraordinary patience it may well blossom...eventually! Tasted at the Ruchottes-Chambertin vertical in London.

    • Georges Mugneret Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2005 (1x75cl)

      Vinous (97)

The 2005 Ruchottes-Chambertin is the highlight of recent vintages. It has a brilliant nose that is endowed with astonishing precision, far more than previous vintages with mineral-rich cassis and red cherry fruit, later a hint of oyster shell. Crystalline is the word that springs to mind. The palate is symmetrical in terms of its balance, armed with filigree tannin, show-stopping purity and a satin-like finish that takes your breath away. Is there a touch of stem addition on the end? I don't care. This is a gold-plated fabulous wine. Tasted at the Ruchottes-Chambertin vertical in London.

    • Georges Mugneret Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2009 (1x75cl)

      Vinous (95)

The 2009 Ruchottes-Chambertin was 100% de-stemmed. It has a gorgeous bouquet with vivid scents of plush red cherry fruit, cassis, violets and a hint of vanilla remaining from some new oak to be subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with an elegant, precise opening. It is embroidered with a perfect thread of acidity and gains momentum towards the finish that feels plush and sensual (not a million miles away from the 1999 stylistically). It needs three or four more years in bottle but there is great potential here. Tasted at the Ruchottes-Chambertin vertical in London.

    • Georges Mugneret Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2010 (1x75cl)

      Vinous (93-95)

The 2010 Ruchottes-Chambertin is pure silk on the palate. Freshly cut roses, raspberries, mint and crushed rocks are some of the nuances that take shape in the glass. In 2010, the Ruchottes is rich, yet weightless, in the way only Burgundy can be. All the elements are beautifully woven together in this totally gracious, striking wine. This parcel is over 60 years old. The Mugneret sisters aren't in favor of using the Vieilles Vignes designation for the wines, as that term has no formal definition. The old vines go into Ruchottes, the young vines into the 1er Cru.

    • Georges Mugneret Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2011 (1x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (95)

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Despite some reduction, there is clearly plenty of attractive ripe red berry fruit on the nose of Mugneret-Gibourg’s Ruchottes-Chambertin 2011: cranberry, wild strawberry and touches of blueberry. The palate is less masculine and reserved compared to when I tasted it at the domaine at the end of 2013. Here it feels more velvety on the entry. It has a cashmere texture with well-judged acidity and superb structure. The fruit is darker than Christophe Roumier's Ruchottes, but there is very good weight and persistence on the finish that bodes well for the future.

    • Georges Mugneret Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 (1x75cl)

      Vinous (98+)

The 2012 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the outstanding wines of the vintage. Pure and sensual on the nose, replete with that breath-taking clarity, it dares to show more fruit intensity than the Romanée-Saint-Vivant from DRC served blind alongside. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red cherries and crushed stone, very mineral-driven with a wonderful, linear finish that is saving fireworks for those with the nous to age this another four or five years. Brilliant. Tasted blind at 67 Pall Mall in London.

    • Georges Mugneret Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2013 (1x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (96)

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru was showing some quality new oak on the nose that still needs to be subsumed. It is tightly coiled but it just needs time because there is freshness, definition and beguiling complexity locked in here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very well judged acidity and clever use of new oak lending body without compromising terroir expression. The finish feels focused and satisfying and the texture leaves you totally seduced. Class, class, class. Tasted September 2016.

      Vinous (98)

The 2014 Ruchottes-Chambertin is a wondrous wine. Two recent tastings in Burgundy reconfirmed its strong performance when poured blind at the Burgfest tasting. It has an intense pomegranate and raspberry scented bouquet that seems to switch up through the gears with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and lithe, laden with succulent black fruit and insistent grip, perhaps just beginning to close up for a while. Outstanding. Tasted in Burgundy.

    • Georges Mugneret Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 (3x75cl)

      Vinous (97)

The 2015 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru shows quite a bit of new oak on the nose of dusky black fruit laced with tobacco and a little sous-bois, all nicely defined but burly and broad-shouldered. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin and somewhat dry and oppressive at the moment, although there is substance on the finish. Sinewy and almost rustic in style, this is almost an anachronistic Grand Cru, but one that I am fascinated to see evolve. Lo and behold, it ameliorates with aeration, implying that the future is assured. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

    • Georges Mugneret Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2016 (1x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (95)

The 2016 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru was also showing very well indeed from bottle, revealing a lovely bouquet of wild berries, spicy forest floor, dark chocolate and wild rose. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and satiny, with an elegantly textural attack, a bright core of fruit and a bright line of animating acidity, concluding with a mineral finish. Having escaped the year's frosts, this was cropped at more normal yields than the Clos Vougeot and Echezeaux, so it's no surprise it is more charming but less concentrated than those two special wines.

The 2017 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a wonderful bouquet that fulfills its potential from barrel: very well defined, precise and mineral-driven with scents of black cherry, raspberry preserve and crushed stone. Vinous (96-98)

The 2018 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is matured in 70% new oak. It has a broody, introspective nose at first, but there is a sense of nascent intensity as it gradually unfurls in the glass, revealing raspberry, wild strawberry and crushed limestone aromas. The medium-bodied palate offers supple, pliant tannins. Quite saline in the mouth, with admirable density and complexity on the mineral-rich finish. This seems to revel in the 2018 vintage. A wonderful Ruchottes.

      Vinous (96-98)

The 2019 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru includes 15% whole cluster fruit this year. This was very tight, almost surly on the nose following on from the Echézeaux, wet limestone suffusing the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins. There is an electric line of acidity here, and superb mineralité and symmetry toward a persistent finish that lingers long in the mouth. Very sweet, almost candied on the aftertaste. Just bloomin’ gorgeous.

    • Georges Mugneret Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2020 (1x75cl)

      Vinous (93-95)

The 2020 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a crystalline bouquet that articulates the limestone terroir with style. You can smell the vineyard in this wine, crushed rock percolating through the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with vibrant red fruit mixed with spice and sous-bois, quite powerful yet somehow strict, almost to the point of attenuation, towards the finish. Perhaps this year, their crown jewel is surpassed by their Clos de Vougeot, which is not unprecedented.

The 2009 Clos de Vougeot is a huge, huge Burgundy. It will need considerable time to shed its baby fat and its considerable tannin. The 2009 boasts incredible depth and richness, with layers of dark red fruit that saturate the palate through to the finish. The 2009 is a super impressive showing from the Mugneret sisters. This is an intense style of Clos de Vougeot that has also maintained considerable freshness.

    • Mugneret Gibourg Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2010 (1x75cl)

      Vinous (95)

Good medium red with a healthy rim. Alluring, deeply pitched aromas of raspberry, mocha, dried flowers, spices and smoky oak. Then juicy, salty and penetrating, with the low yield of the vintage obvious in the wine's intensity. Firm acidity--probably higher than the last three wines, notes Marie-Andrée--energizes and sharpens the highly complex flavors of red and darker berries, licorice, spices, blood orange and black pepper. A wine with outstanding precision, this beauty boasts terrific inner-mouth floral lift and also spreads out horizontally to saturate the palate on the very long whiplash of a finish. Plenty of soil-driven minerality here and still distinctly firm-edged on the aftertaste. Marie-Christine noted that this wine was very closed when she pulled the cork an hour before our tasting. Bright medium red. Lovely ineffable perfume of red cherry, raspberry, minerals and flowers, plus a darker suggestion of blackberry. Boasts great intensity to its flavors of red and black fruits and flowers, with captivating minerality and perfectly integrated acidity giving the wine outstanding inner-mouth tension without any hardness. Firm, even, late-arriving tannins frame the fruit on the rising finish of this very classy grand cru.

    • Mugneret Gibourg Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2014 (1x75cl)

      Vinous (94)

Healthy medium red; not as dark as the '15. Spicy red fruits, menthol and musky soil tones on the expressive nose, along with the salty aspect of this vintage. Fine-grained, floral and mineral-driven, conveying terrific cut to its strawberry, raspberry and blood orange fruit flavors. But owing to its strong saline minerality, this dense but juicy wine is about much more than primary fruit and is already long on personality. More savory and refined than the very young 2015 if not nearly as massive as that wine. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and a lingering spice element. Healthy dark red with ruby highlights. Lovely floral, spicy high tones to the aromas of dark cherry and raspberry. In a distinctly ripe style for this bottling, offering sweet, plush flavors of black raspberry, licorice, flowers, crushed rock and bitter chocolate. Still some new oak to be absorbed but this large-scaled Clos Vougeot has the stuffing to support it. Finishes ripely tannic and very long, with palate-saturating richness and captivating savory minerality. The first wine of my morning vertical tasting with the Mugneret sisters and a true breakfast of champions. Vinous (93-95)

(just four barrels produced; my sample was a blend of all of them): Dark red-ruby color. Very deep aromas of black cherry and crushed dark raspberry lifted by subtle treble notes of white pepper and flowers. Densely packed and wonderfully velvety and full; perhaps a bit less refined than the Ruchottes due to the smaller crop and impression of chewy extract, but this wine boasts terrific definition, not to mention suave, fully ripe tannins for Clos Vougeot. Finishes lively, subtle and very long, with building richness. This fruit was harvested at 12.9% potential alcohol and the wine should age for a long time on its sheer strength of material. Splendid.

The aromatics and nuance of the 2010 are missing, but in exchange readers will find a deep, fleshy wine that will deliver considerable pleasure with minimum cellaring. Layers of dark, deeply spiced fruit blossom in the glass as the 2011 shows off its pure volume. The Echézeaux boasts fabulous extract and serious concentration. Good bright, deep red. Complex, subtle aromas of raspberry, redcurrant and graphite minerality, plus some sexy oak tones. Ripe and silky, even plump for the year, but classically dry and light on its feet. Saturates the mouth and cheeks without leaving any impression of heaviness. At this point in my tasting, Marie-Christine Mugneret noted that these 2013s had been uncorked the previous evening. Good full red. Reticent aromas of redcurrant, tobacco, dried rose and musky minerality complemented by a touch of smoky, spicy oak. The oak element builds in the mouth, which is less sweet and filled in today than the Feusselottes. Hints of dried flowers and menthol currently dominate the wine's red berry flavors. A touch tart-edged on the finish, with the tannins showing a slightly granular quality. I don't find the same consistent ripeness here that the estate's two other grand crus display.
