Mullineux Iron Syrah 2017 (3x150cl)

Tim Atkin MW (96)

Iron has the highest clay content of the three soil-specific Mullineux Syrahs, as well as some ferrous grip, and tends to perform best in drought years. Plush, broad and complex, with palate-coating tannins, dark plum and blueberry fruit, scented oak and some clove spice from 100% whole bunches. One of a trio of superb Syrahs. 2022-32

Chenin Blanc is the marquee variety here, with support from 26% Clairette Blanche, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Semillon Gris, Viura and Verdelho, most of which is sourced from 37 to 70-year-old vines. Lemon, lime and wet stone flavours with some phenolic grip and remarkable palate length.

Mullineux Quartz Chenin Blanc 2013 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

The 2013 Mullineux Quartz Chenin is a new label that sits alongside the Schist Chenin in the same manner as their Shiraz. It has a quite remarkable and captivating nose that is a different species to the Schist Chenin: opening with glorious cinnamon, clove, hints of turmeric even. The palate is very vibrant and tense with fine acidity, quite compact and less expressive than the aromatics at the moment, with touches of spice towards the finish. Very fine, although I would allow it a couple of years in bottle to allow the palate to develop. Bewitching.

Mullineux Schist Chenin Blanc 2013 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93)

The sophomore 2013 Mullineux Schist Chenin comes from two 35-year-old vineyards and has a seductive lemon thyme, dried pineapple and quince-scented bouquet, hints of lemon curd developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with touches of lime flower, dried apricot, a touch of quince and great precision on the finish. I cannot wait to see how this develops and though approachable now, I would prefer to cellar my bottles for 3-4 years.

Mullineux Schist Syrah 2017 (3x150cl)

Tim Atkin MW (95)

The Schist Syrah is sourced from the extensive Roundstone property and, like its stablemates Granite and Iron, is fermented with whole bunches and aged in one third-new oak. Rich, savoury and concentrated, but with considerable underlying finesse, rose petal notes and refreshing, palate-cleansing acidity. 2021-30

Mullineux Syrah 2017 (6x75cl)

Tim Atkin MW (93)

One of my "go to" wines when I see it on a restaurant wine list, this intensely perfumed Syrah comes from seven vineyards, mostly on schist soils. Made with 90% whole bunches, it has more tannin than you think at first, layers of spice, violet and blackberry fruit and a refreshing tang.
