    Paolo Scavino

Today the Paolo Scavino estate stretches to around 23 ha. All the vines are in Barolo and there are parcels in 19 different Crus. The estate was found in 1921 in Castiglione Falleto by Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo. Enrico Scavino has been working in the winery since the age of ten (!), beginning in 1951. He now runs his estate with his daughters, who are the fourth generation. Changes for the 2016 vintage included oak vats for fermentation. Most of the Barolos are aged in a combination of small and large oak.

Paolo Scavino Barbera d'Alba Affinato Carati 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (92)

Made with fruit from old vines, the 2015 Barbera d'Alba Affinato In Carati is only produced in the best vintages. The first vintage made was 1988. The wine stands out for its natural freshness and energy that is especially balanced and focused in this warm vintage. The 2015 growing season was ideal for a grape with naturally high freshness like Barbera. The Scavino family has done an excellent job of pulling out the elegant side of this grape. This is not always an easy feat. The vines are planted in limestone-rich soils and these conditions also help to soften out any rough edges. This wine should hold ten years, if not more.

    Vinous (95)

The 2008 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is incredibly fine in this vintage, probably because of the addition of a new Riserva from this vineyard into the lineup. Dark red fruit, flowers, mint and spices flow from this graceful, refined Barolo. It will be interesting to see where the 2008 goes from here. I can't say the 2008 is a very typical Bric del Fiasc because it is more finesse than power, but it is a very beautiful wine just the same.

The 2013 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is one of the most complete and satisfying wines in the range. Exquisitely layered and precise, the Bric del Fiasc is also unusually nuanced in this vintage. Iron, smoke, rose petal, mint and crushed flowers give the wine its distinctive aromatic signatures. The driving Bric del Fiasc tannins are present, and yet the 2013 is laid back and understated - as all the 2013s Barolos are - with less of its customary explosiveness and brutish power. I can't wait to see how it ages.

    Wine Advocate (95+)

From the Scavino family’s home-turf vineyard, the 2015 Barolo Bric dël Fiasc (with fruit from Castiglione Falletto) delivers structure, firmness and power. This is a classic interpretation of a historic cru, and the wine offers linear, crisp lines. Fruit from this site was fermented separately for the first time to make this wine in 1978. The family had long recognized the consistently superior quality of the fruit from this location, and they saw its special potential. Enrico Scavino told me about the rush of adrenaline and pride that washed over him when he first tasted this wine with his peers Gaja and Conterno during those Golden Years of the past and saw the enthusiasm their eyes. This is the go-to Barolo if you want to taste classic Scavino.

The 2016 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is a powerful, muscular wine. Youthfully austere and tannic, the 2016 is going to need a number of years to come around, but it is magnificent, even in the early going. Layers of building tannins enshroud a core of dark Nebbiolo fruit, with hints of dried herbs, iron, leather and sweet tobacco that develop with a bit of coaxing. As always, Bric del Fiasc has a feral intensity to it. The 2016 is an especially fine edition and also a terrific example of the style of this Castiglione Falletto site.

The 2010 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio bursts open with an immediate whiff of fresh flowers and crushed roses. Paolo Scavino bought the four-hectare, south-facing vineyard in 2001 the same moment he saw the listing. Crushed mineral tones appear at the back but those delicate fruit and floral tones take center stage. The wine is smooth and silky, although the tannic presence and acidity are very much in play. Drink: 2017-2030.

The beautiful 2013 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio comes from the Scavino family's biggest single-vineyard parcel that measures five hectares. This is a more structured and tannic expression of Nebbiolo that could use a few extra years of cellar aging to move it forward. The wine sports thick concentration and luscious fruit flavors that peel off in thick and succulent layers. Blackberry is followed by dried cherry, leather and spice. Only a handful (maybe five?) producers make Barolo from Bricco Ambrogio. This is a seriously gorgeous wine.

    Wine Advocate (93)

The 2015 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is Scavino's cru from this northeastern-most vineyard in the Barolo appellation, in the village of Roddi, and comprises seven hectares of mostly Nebbiolo but also some Dolcetto and Barbera. These vines with their southeastern exposure are not protected from the elements very well, allowing for more diurnal temperature shifts. Therefore, this site always produces much fresher fruit flavors. Indeed, you get noticeably crunchy, tonic fruit here along with a more detailed aromatic portrait. The wine is more precise compared to Monvigliero, for example, which offers more dense fruit, while Bricco Ambrogio is more delicate in the mouth. These soils are gray marlstone, with some yellow veins of clay in there and some sand, whereas Monvigliero soils are far whiter in nature. A fresh Barolo like this would pair well with any fatty sausage.

Paolo Scavino Barolo Cannubi 2014 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

The Scavino family rents half a hectare of Cannubi and has been doing so since 1985. Vines at the site were planted in 1946, and although some have been replanted, about 80% of those old vines are intact. The site boasts well-draining soils that add to the aromatic identity and intensity of the wines. Fruit in Cannubi tends to ripen a bit earlier than the other grand cru sites in Barolo. This specific half-hectare sees harder marl soils compared to the loose sandy soils that distinguish the rest of Cannubi. Yields are extremely low due to the low vigor on old vines and the Nebbiolo clone (Michet) planted here. The 2014 Barolo Cannubi is a beautifully bright and clean wine with elegant tones of wild fruit, rose and anise. This wine exhibits soft and silky tannins over a compact mouthfeel.

The 2015 Barolo Cannubi is another heady, dense wine in this range. Here, too, there is a ton of potential, but at present the 2015 is fruity and primary. I would give it a good few years for some of the baby fat to melt away. Even with all of its textural richness, the 2015 has quite a bit of underlying detail and nuance that emerges with just a bit of aeration. There is plenty to look forward to, that much is clear.

The 2017 Barolo Cannubi is bright, effusive and punchy. It is also quite nervous at this stage. That won’t be an issue in a few years’ time, but readers should be prepared to be patient.
