Dark violet color. Aromas of ripe dark berries, candied flowers and baking spices, along with hints of cola and mocha. Shows very good depth as well as energy to its sweet cherry-cola and blackberry flavors, which spread out steadily through the back half. Closes long, smoky and smooth, with repeating spiciness and even tannins that add subtle grip.

2 months maturation in French hogsheads (26% new) resulted in a wine with a vivid yet deep crimson-purple hue that duly delivered on the promise of its colour. A light year away from the style of the '80s, American oak providing more flavour than the fruit. Now there's a velvety-smooth abundance of plum, blackberry compote and spice couched in soft, but persistent, tannins.

A bold, tarry and rich expression with a deeply embedded, dark-plum and blackberry core of aromas that are framed in very nicely fitted oak. There’s a 50/50 split of American and French and both are equally split between 50% new and 50% one-year-old. There’s a move to puncheons here, too. The palate is breathtakingly deep and supple with such impressive, soft, plush ripe blackberries. Long, powerful and immaculately captured tannins. Bold and beautiful. Will age for two decades easily. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The regional stamp is embedded deeply here. Redcurrant, blackcurrant, mint and leafy aromas with a core of very fine, lithe tannins that really chisel the palate into shape. The florals are here in red and violet shades, together with purple-olive tapenade, sweeter red berries and an almost raspberry-like core. The palate is bright, long and powerful with an elegant core of fine, assertive tannins in play. The warm wave of spicy oak into the finish is delivered with class and finesse. Long and regal. This is superb cabernet sauvignon and the shining star of this year's collection. Drink from 2022 and for two decades at least.

    The Real Review (98)

Very deep, dark, youthful purple/red colour, impressive in the glass. The bouquet is reserved and understated, with more earthy, savoury aromas coming first followed by cassisy cabernet-like nuances, the palate more elegant than expected with lovely purity of concentrated blackberry, blackcurrant cabernet fruit skilfully welded to neatly integrated oak characters. A cracking wine, concentrated but in no way heavy or overwrought. Indeed, it has real elegance. A delicious wine, and there's much more to come for those who are patient.

Clearly defining what many customers expect from a conventional Australian Shiraz, this has sunny, fresh and vibrant fruit aromas and flavours swirling in the glass: big blackberry in an embrace with satsuma plum. Generous in body without being flabby, the disciplined oak and tannin regime pulls the belly taut to ensure the palate finishes clean and lean. Say yes to another glass – especially as it offers very good value. Released at AU$50.

Cabernet just has the upper hand in the blend at 53%; this continues as a rising star in the Penfolds family of reds, showing a very attractive fusion of cabernet and shiraz. Cassis, blackberry, red plums and red currant fruits, the palate isn't overplayed in terms of weight or extract, but it's very complete and nicely rendered. Best from 2020-2030+.

Wrattonbully doing very well for Penfolds. Slightly green note on the end. Gamey note too, but you know that all the holes on the palate will eventually be filled. Lifted fruit. Masses of tannins underneath really pushing up through the fruit. Minty note too. This seems much more youthful than most. Lip-smacking but pretty embryonic. High kicking and attention-grabbing but needs time.

Close to an even split of each, the 2017 Cabernet Shiraz, which is always aged in the prior year’s Grange barrels, is a beauty, offering full-bodied, powerful notes of blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, chocolate, toasted spices, and gravelly minerality. Deep, beautifully concentrated, and balanced, it has nicely integrated acidity, ripe yet present tannins, and, again, just terrific overall balance. It also builds beautifully with time in the glass and is a seriously good red blend from this team. Drink it any time over the coming 10-15 years.

A blend of 57% cabernet sauvignon and 43% shiraz, this has a very impressively complete feel, a hallmark of the 2018 vintage wines, and there’s a myriad of characters with cabernet’s cedary and gently herbal notes sitting atop a core of rich red-plum and dark-berry shiraz fruit aromas. So integrated. The palate has a very silky texture, so plush and polished with a wealth of rich and intense dark-plum, dark-berry and blackcurrant flavors. With its seamless textural slide across the palate, this is a superb example of what is considered a distinctly Australian blend, showing both generosity and serious intent. There's no Bin 707 from the 2017 vintage, so that fruit has been put into the 2017 Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon. It's a lifted, perfumed style of Cabernet aged in both French and American hogsheads, with leafy, minty accents and Ribena-like cassis notes. Medium to full-bodied, it has a velvety texture and a soft, approachable finish, tinged with vanilla and dried spices. The warm vintage was mitigated in part by the major Limestone Coast components. Medium to full-bodied, with pronounced blackcurrant varietal fruit expression framed by sage and bay leaf, and appropriately firm cabernet tannins that add both texture and structure. McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Barossa Valley and Padthaway fruit. Matured 18 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Such a bold statement of new American oak seems somehow old-fashioned in this day and age of Australian cabernet, and yet there is a comfortable assurance about the irrefutable Bin 707 model, promising that the woodwork will find its place with sufficient patience. The purity and precision of cassis and blackcurrant fruit on display is something to behold. In inimitable Bin 707 form, new American oak rises to the auspicious occasion, propelling and uplifting to mighty effect and monumental tannin impact. Fruit and oak sit apart for now, but each in their rightful place, and, as ever, promise great things indeed in a very long time to come. Line and length of the highest order confirm it will go the distance without the slightest doubt.

A new wine for me, the 1990 Cabernet/Shiraz Bin 90A is another impressive wine, although I did not think it justified the lofty $100+ price tag. While I preferred the Bin 707, the Bin 90A is an outstanding wine with a deep, saturated ruby/purple color, and a smoky, roasted herb, blackcurrant, jammy-scented nose. Thick, rich, and full-bodied, with elevated tannin, this spicy, boldly-styled wine will drink well for 15-20 years. Importer: PWG Vintners, USA, Inc., Monterey, CA; tel. (408) 655-4848

    Wine Advocate (98+)

It is always a treat to taste Australia’s most famous wine, Penfolds’ Grange cuvee (the word Hermitage has been dropped because of legal issues). The 2001 Grange is one of the few vintages of this cuvee to be composed of 100% Shiraz (the others being 1951, 1952, 1963, 1999, and 2000). Aged 17 months in 100% American oak, and tipping the scales at 14.5% alcohol, the 2001 is undeniably one of the top examples of this wine. At this stage, it appears to eclipse the 1998 and 1996. Inky/blue/purple to the rim, with a stunning perfume of blueberries, blackberries, chocolate, graphite, and earth, it boasts good acidity, huge tannins, magnificent concentration, and a multilayered, textured mouthfeel. It is a big, but impeccably well-balanced Shiraz that should shed some of its structure and tannin over the next 4-5 years, and be at its best between 2010-2030+.

Containing just a dollop of 4.1% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2005 Grange is about 85%+ Barossa fruit with the remaining proportions coming from McLaren vale and Coonawarra. It was aged for 18 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. The nose begins a bit animal with some smoked game, mincemeat and bacon notes emerging over the freshly crushed, sun-warmed blackberries, black currant cordial, earth, black truffles, anise and allspice. Wine Advocate (98+)

Made from fruit coming predominantly from the Barossa Valley this year (97%) and containing 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2006 Grange has been added to my list of favorite recent vintages. Deep garnet-purple colored, it’s still a little youthfully mute, offering notes of warm cherries, black currants, anise, coffee and toast with underlying hints of soy, yeast extract, black olives and Indian spices. Tight-knit and solidly structured on the medium to full bodied palate, the concentrated fruit is densely coiled around the firm grainy tannins and very crisp acidity at this stage, but promises something very special in the years to come. It finishes very long, complex and layered with the cedar poking though the fruit purity. Patience is required for this vintage; it should begin opening out around 2016 and drink to 2030+.

Very deep garnet-purple in color the 2008 Grange reveals a truly decadent nose with tons of spices, fruit cake and black & blue fruit compote notes along with nuances of chocolate and potpourri. The full and rich, multi-layered palate has a little oak still showing, it is going through a little bit of a structural stand-out stage, but it doesn't detract on the long and complex finish. It still needs a good few years to develop, though this very opulent, expressive Grange shows the very best of this vintage and the vineyards it hails from.
