Peter Sisseck

A dutchman by birth, Sisseck has established himself in high standing in the Ribera del Duero, producing some of the regions best cult wines. He practices Biodynamic farming to great effect and his resulting wines are elegant yet forceful. The piece de resistance in his litany of magical wines is surely the inimitable, legendary Pingus. The flagship not only of Sisseck's wines but arguably of an entire region, it is one of Spain's true gems and among the world's most sought after red wines.

Peter Sisseck Dominio de Pingus Psi 2016 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93)

The entry-level 2016 PSI was also tasted before it was bottled the last time I covered the Duero zone, so I had it again, this time in bottle and next to the also-bottled 2017 and a sample of the 2018. This really reminded me of the style of the old-time Ribera del Duero, classical, with some aromas of orange peel, wild herbs and berries. They used grapes from 22 villages from Ribera to showcase the style of this zone—wines with character, nicely integrated oak (they use old vines with some 10% to 12% Garnacha, and the wine matures in oak vats rather than barrique) and a gentle texture with the tannic structure of the zone. This is delicious and really represents the naked character of the place without oak. 300,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2018.

Wine Advocate (91+)

The entry-level wine here is the 2015 PSI, their regional Tempranillo cuvée with approximately 5% to 10% Garnacha. It fermented in stainless steel and matured mostly in 5,000-liter oak foudres and 10,000-liter oak vats plus some of it in used barrels. Looking back, Peter Sisseck told me he would have liked to harvest the grapes one week earlier. It's a solid PSI that's clean and a little ripe and might give some notes of black olive that give it a little bit of a Rhône twist. 250,000 bottles produced. Sisseck sees this as an improved version of the 2011. It was bottled in the summer of 2017.
