    Philipponnat

    About Philipponnat

A true hidden gem is something of a rarity in a region subject to so much attention, but we believe Philipponnat has been consistently overlooked by the market in favour of other names in Champagne.

Boasting a heritage spanning almost 500 years, the Philipponnat family has been cultivating vines in the region of Aÿ as early as 1522 and count the Court of Louis XIV, Magistrates and Royal Mayors of Aÿ as its loyal patrons amongst many others.

The 2015 Extra-Brut Cuvée 1522 is laced with hints of white flowers, mint, dried herbs and light tropical notes. There’s good depth and intensity in the fruit, but also some coarseness in the texture, which suggests variability in ripening, plus perhaps some touches of tannin from the fruit and oak fermentation, which is about 58% for this release. I would prefer to drink the 1522 at the dinner table, where some of that textural intensity will be an asset. Most of this fruit comes from estate vineyards in Aÿ, plus dollops of Pinot Noir from Mailly and Chardonnay from Verzy. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: February, 2022.

The 2009 Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs Les Cintres hails from lieux-dits Les Grands Cintres and Les Petits Cintres in the steep, south-facing part of the Clos des Goisses which is characterized by the thinnest, reddest soils in the vineyard and where the house's oldest vines are planted. Amazingly, the 2009 attained 13.5% alcohol, the highest numbers recorded chez Philipponnat since 1959. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of warm bread, fresh peach, mango and yeast extract, it's full-bodied, thickly textural and vinous, with lively acids—Philipponnat opting to block malolactic fermentation—and a deep, multidimensional core, concluding with a long and powerful finish. This is a broad-shouldered, authoritative wine that may disconcert by virtue of its sheer scale, but it is a potential legend in the making.

The 2008 Mareuil-sur-Aÿ Extra Brut is one of a trio of single-plot cuvées, of which 2008 is the second vintage after 2006. Grown in several upper plots of the Clos des Goisses that are entirely planted with Pinot Noir (on more clayey soils), vinified 44% in wooden barrels (without malolactic fermentation), the 2008 Mareuil offers a clear, fresh and precise bouquet of red fruits, dark cherries and black chocolate. The palate is beautifully pure and fresh, very fine, elegant and light but also complex and is provided with a long, tensioned, very mineral and exciting finish. It is filigreed, very salty and stimulating in the aftertaste. Aged for at least seven years in the House’s cellars, the 2008 is only the second vintage after 2006. Disgorged in September 2017. Tasted at the domaine in April 2018. Total production: 3,339 bottles.

(65% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Meunier; no dosage, as the name indicates; disgorged in June, 2014): Light yellow. High-pitched and pure on the nose, offering intensely mineral citrus fruit and floral scents and a hint of ginger. Dry and incisive on the palate, delivering bitter lemon pith and pear skin flavors and a touch of honeysuckle. Closes taut, dry and very long, with excellent clarity and repeating floral character. This bottling was made entirely from 2010 wines.
