Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande (Pichon Lalande) is a 2éme Grand Cru Classé estate in Pauillac. The estate – and its ‘brother’ Pichon Longueville Baron – was effectively created in 1850 when Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville divided a larger property (comprising both estates) between his five children. Until 2007 the property was owned by descendent May-Eliane de Lencquesaing (from 1978). She presided over a steep ascent in the estate’s fortunes. As well as investing heavily in the property, she was a tireless ambassador and presided over a significant increase in Pichon Lalande’s size, from 40ha when she took over to 89ha now. In 2007 the estate was acquired by the owners of Louis Roederer Champagne, who have continued its traditions and, if anything, taken the property on to even greater heights.
Viniculture
This producer has a reputation for sheer, unrivalled elegance within the commune of Pauillac due to the slightly lower percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend than is typical, with other varietals softening and smoothing the beautifully textured and exquisitely perfumed wines.

The Wine Cellar Insider (100)Absolutely compelling from the initial swirl, sniff and sip. It takes no time to recognize this as being an incredible, future legendary Bordeaux! The perfume is mesmerizing with its display of flowers, spices, tobacco leaf, cassis, plum and blackberries. But it is the texture, with its layers of silky, perfectly, ripe, sweet fruits that steals the show. Vinous - Antonio Galloni (96-98)Do you want the good news or the bad news first? Let's start with the good. The 2021 Pichon Comtesse is epic and certainly among the great wines of this vintage. Sadly, the coulure and mildew in the first year of organic farming plus dehydration at the end of the growing season took with it fully two thirds of the crop. In other words, there's not much wine to go around. Rich and sumptuous in the glass, yet clocking in at 12.9% alcohol, the 2021 is beautifully layered and totally sensual from the very first taste. Hints of red fruit, flowers, mint, white pepper and dried savory herbs develop with a bit of coaxing. The Cabernet Sauvignon, at 88%, is very high by historical standards. Quite simply, the 2021 is a tour de force from Technical Director Nicolas Glumineau and his team. If there is one wine readers will absolutely jump on en primeur it is Pichon Comtesse. Should the bottled wine turn out as well as this sample, pricing is likely to jump materially because of the tiny production. Don't miss it. |

The Wine Independent (98-100)A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is deep garnet-purple in color. After a little coaxing, aromas of blackcurrant jelly, juicy plums, and wild blueberries waltz out of the glass, followed by nuances of red roses, damp soil, tar, and licorice. The medium-bodied palate is tightly wound, with impressive tension created by mineral-laced, crunchy black fruit layers, framed by firm, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and savory. pH 3.8. |

James Suckling (98-99)Wow. This is really excellent, with superb finesse and focus. It has tight density that is almost diamond-like in its brilliance. Medium to full body, with a quality of tannin that is incredibly seamless. Like silk in texture. A top Pichon Lalande. From organic and biodynamically grown grapes. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot and 3% cabernet franc. May be better than 2022. |
