Remelluri
Bodegas y Viñedos Remelluri occupies a pride of place in the history of Rioja that few can equal or even rival. The origins of the estate date back to the 1300s when the land it now occupies was founded as a monastic sanctuary with the planting of prime vineyards. In the 1960s the land was broken up and sold ad hoc. It could have been the end for Remelluri, but fortunately one of the buyers, Jaime Rodriguez Salis, had the vision to see the site for its truly special terroir and devoted many years to recovering the lost lands of the estate, work that has been taken up with enthusiasm by the legend of new wave Spanish winemaking, Telmo Rodriguez. There is almost a hint of Barolo-esque classicism here. Great acidity, fine yet firm tannins and delicate red fruit contribute to a deeply traditional Rioja profile that has too often been eschewed for modern fruit-and-oak bombs.
