Robert Weil
About Robert Weil
Robert Weil is the star producer in Rheingau. Founded in 1875, the estate has deep roots in German Riesling tradition. The estate today is run by Wilhelm Weil, the great-grandson of the estate’s founder. Across their 90ha they grow only Riesling, which grows on angles of up to 60 degrees on the steep banks of the Rhine River. And all picking is done by hand.
Robert Weil Rieslings express the mineral-rich soils of the vineyards. They are elegant and complex, with pronounced fruit and nuanced flavors and aromas. They embody a perfect interplay of fine yet firm acidity with natural sweetness and extract.

Wine Advocate (96)The 2018 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Trocken GG is a great dry Riesling: very juicy, intense and long, yet fresh and mineral, with remarkable finesse, structure and a persistently salty finish. The wine opens with a deep, ripe and fine, fresh and elegant Riesling bouquet with many layers and aromas that develop with aeration when mirabelle aromas start emerging and intertwine with the noble sur lie and flinty terroir notes. Vinified in large oak, this is a full-bodied, round and rich, textured Gräfenberg with a firm tannin structure and fine and ripe, mineral acidity. This is a firm and tense Riesling with reduced power, sustainable salinity and mineral freshness on the finish. 38,000 bottles were filled in July 2019. Tasted three times in autumn and winter 2019. Drink: 2024 - 2045 |

James Suckling (97)Deep, dense and subtle, this is an imposing wine, yet remains so vital and animating. Shimmering with a thousand facets, but also with a forthright, nectarine note that makes it instantly appealing. Brilliant finish that reminds us what it's like to be up in high mountains – the light, the air. Drink or hold. |

James Suckling (95)A whiff of smoky mystery sucks you into this concentrated and very elegant dry wine that has strident minerality through the very long, driving finish. Great aging potential. Drink or hold. |

James Suckling (97)A very special style of Auslese, because there’s zero-percent botrytis here. Pristine and crystalline, with driving acidity that might be too much for some, but we find it very exciting. Essence of white peach with enormous passion-fruit and lemon-zest freshness that whips the sweetness into the background. Decades of aging potential. Drink or hold. |

Wine Advocate (96)Vinified in stück and doppelstück (1,200- and 2,400-liter barrels, respectively) and aged on the full lees until the end of July, the 2020 Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken shows a fascinating, deep, intense and generous as well as complex and aristocratic bouquet of ripe yellow fruits and crushed dark stones. The Turmberg is darker-toned and deeper than the Klosterberg, maybe also even more complex and provided with substantial but elegant fruit. Full-bodied, refined and elegant on the palate, this is a lush, intense and expressive, seriously structured, very long, complex and tensioned Turmberg with a spectacularly long, multilayered and persistently salty finish. Seriously, the Turmberg has never been better than in 2020. For the first time since its re-activation in 2005, the Turmberg premier cru is on grand cru level. Its aftertaste is incredibly dense and compact but also salivating and provided with the energy and expression of a great wine. A Must Buy of the vintage and a Best Buy as well! Magnums preferred. Tasted at the domain in August 2021. |

Jancis Robinson (17.5)VDP Erste Lage. An orchestra of outside aromas: dried pears, green apple, mountain stream. Rich palate of ripe orange, pineapple and fine herbal crunch. The citrus slices through the sweetness like rays of sunshine to lighten the whole. Perfectly balanced, with a defined lightness just prior to the elegant saline finish. The very final notes are cut a bit short due to its youth, but this wine isn't going anywhere. |

Vinous (95)Golden yellow. Musky aromas of peach, butterscotch and cinnamon rise above the honeyed botrytis. Full-bodied caramelized fruits overwhelm the palate, only just balanced by the wine's oyster shell salinity. Succulent sweet nectarine pervades the finish. This wine still needs time. |

James Suckling (98)Very lush and exotic. This lives from the almost erotic interplay of enormous ripeness, creamy richness and the fresh acidity that makes this massive wine so bright and enticing. This could live a century! |

Wine Advocate (98)Picked on January 7, the 2016 Rheingau Riesling Kiedrich Gräfenberg Eiswein is super precise and spicy on the concentrated and aromatic nose where pineapple and some ethereal, spicy aromas are displayed. The wine is rich, round and elegant on the palate, very sweet but also piquant and pure, with very fine tannins and a long, vibrant finish. This is a truly great Eiswein with mind-blowing precision and sensual intensity. Total production: 900 liters. Tasted in October 2017. |

Wine Advocate (96)"I love this wine," says Wilhelm Weil, who remembers the 1971 that he loved so much when he was still a child and stole a sip or two from vat no. 07 whenever his parents were away. "The 2018 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Spätlese is one of the finest in living memories of Robert Weil," he says. In fact, the 2018, based on grapes picked at 103° Oechsle and bottled with 9.3% alcohol and 65 grams of residual sugar, is so clear, precise and fresh as well as flinty, like the generic Spätlese but with so much more intensity and concentration. On the palate, this Gräfenberg Spätlese is lush but enormously precise, piquant and firm, very elegant and complex, with fascinating acidity and phenolic as well as mineral grip and tension. A fascinating wine and one of the finest Spätlese in Germany from the 2018 vintage. So mouthwatering and stimulating due to a low pH level and 10 grams of total acidity. However, Weil says the freshness is thanks to the "Bernsteinsäure" that characterizes many of the 2018s. Drink 2019 - 2070 |

James Suckling (100)A gently spicy thread here with all manner of fresh fruit that’s just so ripe. This offers very intense mangoes and apricots with peach essence and gentle candied kumquat. The palate is like a perfect sphere of flavor, completely seamless. This is melded together by an extraordinary vintage and delivered to the greatest heights of sweetness and balance. Really a perfect wine. Drink over decades. |

James Suckling (93)A very classic dry Rheingau riesling with plenty of mineral depth, packed in a rather sleek body. Delicate white-fruit aromas with some yellow-peach and floral notes. Long and precise, dry finish, the freshness of which pulls you back for more. Drink or hold. Screw cap. |

Jancis Robinson (17)VDP Ortswein. Lithe and elegant aromas of wet stone, apple and lemon zest. The stony minerality shapes the outline of the wine, while the acid sets the pace and the fruit colours in the lines. Extremely long and concentrated. Delightful, stony, pithy and fun. |

James Suckling (99)Ripe and golden with a subtle hint of oak in the nose, plus some delicate spice. Super concentrated and super elegant with fabulous minerality at the powerful finish, this astonishing dry riesling is only just beginning to come into its own. The first vintage from this sub-site of the Gräfenberg that the Weil family always called by this Italian name. Drink of hold. |

James Suckling (99)This starts as discreetly as Ravel’s Bolero, the peachy aromas of the Rheingau now just beginning to emerge from behind their veil of yeast from the long maturation in barrel. Then this wine, like Bolero, steadily climbs to a very exciting and expressive conclusion. Then you experience the mineral side of this grape and region in great purity. Drinkable now, but best from 2023. |
