Vinous (94)(15.8% alcohol) Superripe aromas of roasted berries, mocha and dark chocolate, plus a hint of eucalyptus. Huge, dense and broad; a massive wine with almost port-like confectionery ripeness. A bit monolithic today and in need of a few years of bottle aging. Finishes very long, with suave, fine tannins and a sweet note of chocolate.

Vinous (94)Good saturated ruby. Roasted black fruits on the nose. Superripe, fat and dense; broader but not sweeter than the RBS bottling, which is from Clone 337 (this is mostly Clone 4). Blacker in character than the RBS. Very ripe but youthfully closed. Finishes with huge, toothdusting tannins and terrific length. This will need at least four to six years of additional bottle aging. Winemaker Brown considers 2002 a more muscular vintage for cabernet than 2003, which he describes as rounder and fleshier. The 2003s will be better young, but the 2002s will be superior in the long run, he maintains.

Wine Advocate (97)Coming from the Beckstoffer Georges III vineyard, the very deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon GIII bursts forth with an outrageously spicy nose of Chinese five spice and aniseed with a core of crème de cassis, blueberry pie, menthol and chocolate box plus a waft of bay leaves. Medium to full-bodied, rich, ripe and decadent on the palate, it fills the mouth with exotic spice layers and warm black fruits, framed by velvety tannins and great freshness, finishing with epic persistence. 318 cases produced.

Vinous (93)Good saturated medium ruby. Pure, vibrant aromas of black- and redcurrant, dark chocolate, tar, minerals and hot gravel. Dense, youthful and classic, with subtly sweet flavors of currant, milk chocolate, cedar, graphite and tobacco. Finishes long, firmly tannic, fat and classically dry, with lovely lingering sweetness of fruit.

Vinous (90-92)Good deep ruby. Vibrant aromas of crushed blackberry, bitter chocolate and violet. Quite suave on entry, then chewy and juicy in the middle, with strong acidity giving the wine sharp definition. Less obviously sweet than the 2004; in fact, this is distinctly firmer in texture and evolving slowly. Finishes with a note of dark chocolate. This will be entirely from Clone 337, which needs long hang time on the vines.

Vinous (96)The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon RBS Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard comes across as dark, plush and inviting, but with greater inner focus and minerality than some of the other wines here. Graphite, smoke, tar and licorice are some of the notes that wrap around the intense, juicy finish. I especially admire the way the RBS grows in the glass as it turns more explosive over time, yet never loses its more refined shades of expression. The RBS is 100% clone 337 from the B1 and B2 blocks. According to winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, it is the addition of fruit from B2 (new this year) that gives the 2009 much of its personality.

Wine Advocate (98+)Coming from the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, blocks B1, B2 and E2 planted to clone 337, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon RBS has a very deep purple-black color and is a little reticent to begin, offering glimpses at crushed black berries, black cherries and black currants with touches of cedar chest, pencil lead, dark chocolate and dusty earth with a waft of cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied and tautly structured with rock-solid, firm, grainy tannins and seamless freshness supporting the muscular fruit, it finishes on a lingering earthy note. Forget this one over the next 4-5 years, and drink it over the next 25+. 1,096 cases produced.

Wine Spectator (94)'#1 in Wine Spectator Top 100 2022' - Packs in generous steeped plum, boysenberry and mulberry flavors backed by a broad swath of roasted alder and bittersweet cocoa. Brimming with dense fruit, and is squarely in the not-shy style. The long finish has a serious loamy tug, too. Best from 2023 through 2035. 10,000 cases made.

Vinous (97)Schrader’s 2006 and 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon T6, also from my cellar, were showstoppers. I preferred the 2006 for its explosive, vibrant personality, sumptuous fruit and exceptional pedigree. The 2006 was flat-out breathtaking. Wow.

Wine Advocate (97)The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon T6 Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is another big, implosive wine bursting with dark blackberries, blueberries, tar, smoke, licorice and graphite. Layers of fruit build effortlessly to the huge, polished finish. The T6 has it all – fruit and structure. This is a marvelously complete wine that should drink well out of the gate, yet also appears to have the stuffing to last for years. The T6 is clone 6 from the D2 block. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.
