Terroir al Limit

About Terroir al Limit

Terroir al Limit was conceived in 2001, it is a project dreamed up by South African legend Eben Sadie and German foodie Dominik Huber. Though Sadie has taken a step back since 2012, Huber’s winemaking has been going from strength to strength. Vines are farmed biodynamically and the estate is in the midst of being certified organic. Dominik embraces the minimalist approach, allowing his wines to ferment with indigenous yeasts. In fact, Luis Gutiérrez reports that Dominik is even doing away with oak foudres, choosing instead to age their wines in concrete for an even purer expression of this wonderful terroir.

The ‘Dits del Terra’ is produced from 100% Cariñena (also known as Carignan) harvested from vines over 60 years old. Yields are low, with only about 2,000 bottles produced per vintage.

Terroir al Limit Arbossar 2013 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95+)

Similar to the Dits del Terra but from a north-facing slope, the 2013 Arbossar is pure Cariñena from an ancient vineyard planted around 90 years ago, and it is always a fresher and more floral style of Cariñena, matured in a Stockinger foudre for some 16 months. I already tasted an unbottled sample last year and it showed great, lively, very red fruit-driven, electric and full of flowers and minerals, and the bottled version has delivered as expected. It's a bright ruby colored red, which is always fragrant and perfumed, more feminine than the Dits del Terra, which is the comparison because both vineyards are in Torroja and the wines share the same price range. The nose reveals bright red fruit, and feels fresher than the 2014. The tannins are ultra-sleek, really elegant and balanced. This is a superb, elegant and fresh Cariñena, without any rusticity. Super! 4,669 bottles were filled in August 2015.

Terroir al Limit Dits del Terra 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

The south-facing Cariñena vineyard used for the 2018 Dits del Terra is worked biodynamically and is in the process of being certified organic. The grapes fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in 50% oak foudre and 50% in concrete. The 2019 will be 100% concrete. You can immediately notice the cooler year and the longer ripening cycle here compared with the 2017; there is more depth here, and the quality of the tannins is completely different and provide for a more elegant mouthfeel. The oak is neatly integrated and folded into the structure of the wine. It comes through as medium-bodied, powerful and elegant. It should develop nicely in bottle. 2,006 bottles were filled in September 2020.

Terroir al Limit Les Tosses 2012 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (98)

At this point in time the single-vineyard and top-of-the-range Cariñena, the 2012 Les Tosses, feels very reductive and needs lots of air. It has an incredible pH of 2.98, and in the dry 2012 season these 90-year-old vines on black slate at 650 meters altitude behaved magnificently. The wine matured for two years in oak foudre from Austria. The nose takes forever to take off so you have to guide yourself by the prodigious palate where the balance is gobsmacking (literally!) and full of an earthy, rustic and mineral character that has hints of liquid graphite and tree bark. It really shows the essence of Priorat. The 2013, still not bottled, is tremendous as it is much more open, very indigenous and something to look for next year. If 2011 was a triumph over the vintage conditions, this 2012 had the growing season working for it and the results are even better. This year Tosses and Manyes are at the same quality level. On day two the wine is completely open and expressive showing no sign of fatigue or reduction whatsoever. To the contrary, it shows fresh and much better. This should develop tremendously in bottle. 1,500 bottles were produced in 2012.

Terroir al Limit Terra de Cuques 2015 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (91+)

As it had been in bottle for one and a half months, I also tasted the white 2015 Terra de Cuques, the same blend of 90% Pedro Ximenez from Porrera balanced with Moscatel from Molar, fermented with skins and stems for ten days and matured in tank for 16 months. The year could have been a little bit warmer, more in line with the 2009, so Dominik harvested early, resulting in a wine with more acidity than 2014. It is a little cloudy and lighter colored than the 2014. It has a flinty minerality, maybe a little reductive-cum-smoky nose, and it opens up with some time in the glass. Surprisingly enough the wine is fresher and has more tension than the 2014. There is a pleasant bitterness in the finish that combines nicely with the austere minerality. Tasty, and very persistent. This is a wine that calls for food. Volumes keep growing, 16,868 bottles were produced in 2015.
