A haunting nose mingles buddleia and almond extract with intimations of the white peach, Meyer lemon and grapefruit that then juicily and bracingly saturate the palate. A stony undertone, hints of iodine, and a glowing alliance of cyanic peach kernel and almond lend intrigue if also a touch of austerity, leading into a terrifically sustained and multifaceted finish capped by mouthwatering salinity. As with the corresponding Dellchen, I have little doubt that this will improve in bottle, but that doesn’t mean one should deny oneself the succulent and refreshing as well as complex pleasure of drinking a youthful bottle or two.HK$1,225.00 -

From an old parcel in the Hermannshöhle whose vines are still single post-trained, this auctioned bottling (representing the contents of a 600-liter Halbstück) delivers a highly aromatic and luscious amalgam of white peach, pink grapefruit and Persian melon not unlike that familiar from its A.P. #12 counterpart. Suggestions of nut pastes complemented by candied citrus rind are also present. But this boasts a yet creamier texture, greater delicacy, and a more complex and mouthwatering mineral savor, allied to raw scallop-like sweetness and salinity.HK$1,055.00 -

This represents the best cask of Braune Kupp Spätlese, and it’s worth noting that in numbering it for registration purposes, Müller anticipated presenting it in his vintage lineup after the corresponding Scharzhofberger. The deeply ripe fresh purple plum and cherry fruit and the dark, ore-like, mysteriously mineral themes of this year’s Braune Kupp Kabinett are perpetuated here. Smoky and savory hints of Latakia tobacco, along with pronounced piquancy of fruit pit, add to the low-toned, brooding personality of a richly textured and resonantly persistent beauty. My experience with mature Müller Rieslings is almost entirely confined to Scharzhofberger bottlings, which are the wines that get more widely collected as well as those he graciously opens for visitors, so I can only wonder aloud whether the amazing 2014 vintage Braune Kupp Rieslings will keep pace over time with their Scharzhofberg counterparts.HK$5,615.00 -

Whereas the corresponding Braune Kupp auction Spätlese represented a cask selection, this Scharzhofberger reflects a separate picking from the estate’s oldest vines, undertaken with the express intention of achieving auction potential. A head-turning nose and a palate luscious yet cheek-pinching in brightness and mouth-shakingly vibrant deliver white peach, grapefruit and lime wreathed in freesia and infused with Ceylon tea, moss and crushed stone. And as if my mouth wasn’t wrung out already, this beauty’s formidably penetrating, downright reverberative finish – transparent to a shimmering wealth of floral and mineral elements – exhibits tannic grip and milks the salivary glands with its salinity. I fantasized while tasting it that some of those collectors typically in a position to bid on this wine at auction might be scared off by its singular intensity!HK$8,590.00 -

Reflecting a selection of the most perfectly botrytis-inflected bunches from both young and old parcels, this delivers a drippingly luscious yet brightly refreshing meld of almond extract and honeysuckle-tinged honeydew melon and fresh lime. Hints of mint heighten a cooling and transparent impression that took me entirely by surprise given the impression leading up to it. Buoyant and silken-textured, this beauty – of which there are 4,000 liters – finishes with riveting sheer intensity and a shimmering sense of interplay among smoke and stone, melon and lime, inner-mouth florality and saliva-inducing salinity. “I picked these casks out for their having the highest acidity of any in the cellar,” explained Zilliken, “and then vinified a little differently to finish with less residual sugar than usual for an Auslese [for an Auslese of his, that is!] so that it leans more in an elegant Spätlese direction.”HK$2,575.00 -

The 2014 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett is more open than the Graacher Himmelreich (#AP 19) and displays a very delicate bouquet of white fruits intermixed with vegetal and subtle slate aromas. Refined and juicy on the palate, this wine has a perfect balance of a fruity sweetness and a finely racy acidity. This Kabinett is very expressive and complex in its mineral and grippy finish. It is impressively long in the finish, but due to the piquancy and minerality, not due to alcohol that is just 8%. The Sonnenuhr is more complex and intense than the more delicate and filigreed Himmelreich.HK$2,054.00 -

From the oldest vines, the 2014 Riesling G-Max has a very subtle, fresh and precise aroma that is clearly affected from limestone terroir; it shows some herbal flavors such as thyme. Clear, piquant and juicy on the palate, this is a power station in terms of energy. This medium to full-bodied dry Riesling is full of drive and freshness, and shows a great purity and endless salinity with bright, juicy fruit aromas. The G-Max is a bit richer and more powerful on the palate than the Abtserde, but also needs more years to develop the purity and finesse of the former.HK$13,830.00 -

Marine-breeze alkaline and saline notes, black tea smokiness and a hints of framboise distillate penetrate the nostrils, and the mineral complexity that follows on the polished, expansive (even at 12.8% alcohol), remarkably buoyant palate does not disappoint the expectations aroused by the nose. At the same time, there is an infectious abundance of white peach, grapefruit and red raspberry juiciness on tap, invigoratingly accented by piquant but never outright bitter pits and pips along with tart, seed-crunching impingement. A finish of vibratory intensity and consummate refreshment left me exhilarated and panting after the next fascinating, sensuously satisfying sip. Keller calls this the butterfly among his Grosse Gewächse and attributes the jump in quality that it typically represents in tasting that line-up to the stony purity and rapid drainage of the site’s limestone soils. There’s something approaching magic here, that’s for sure!HK$25,405.00 -

Piquancy of apple pip, peach kernel and walnut are already signaled in the penetratingly high-toned nose, and when allied to chalky, stony, iodine notes make for a pithy, austere sort of palate concentration. There is an expansively mouthfilling as well as palpably extract-rich impression but at the same time generous juiciness of lemon and grapefruit, apple and white peach, plus remarkable lift and animation that follow into a vibrantly sustained, focused finish. I have the impression of looking at Keller’s blueprint for what this wine is intended to become, but the blueprint itself is mighty impressive.HK$4,910.00 -

This dry-tasting three-star Auslese reflects some of Molitor’s lowest yields from a harvest of already meager volume. Pungent scents of wood smoke, grapefruit peel and quarry dust set the tone for a zesty, piquant, expansive palate that reflects both high dry extract and 12.5 percent alcohol in its sense of mouth-filling mass. Abundant juiciness of fresh grapefruit and white peach linger into a bright, bittersweetly nutty finish of vibratory intensity. As this opens to the air, it keeps getting more expressively complex and gripping: one more piece of evidence that in 2014, Zeltinger Schlossberg was capable of upstaging Zeltinger Sonnenuhr.HK$4,600.00 -
