Mosel

The Mosel wine region follows the Mosel river from its source to where it joins the Rhine. The best vineyards are sited on steep south facing slopes which are very hard to cultivate but provide ample reward for that work in the end result of the wine. The two most prestigious areas for viniculture are the Saar and Ruwer. Here the excellent Riesling can be delicate but bursting with complexity.

    Wine Advocate (93+)

Molitor's 2020 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett (Green Capsule) is super clear, bright and intense on the utterly slatey, herbal and very delicate, even iodine and, with enough aeration, spectacular nose. Lush and round on the textured palate, this is an intense and juicy but most of all saline Kabinett that lifts everything and leads to an almost dry-tasting yet fruity and juicy finish. There is great precision and piquancy here; think of candied lime rind or maybe a mojito. Wine Advocate (96)

The 2018 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (White Capsule) is bright and intense on the very elegant and refined yet aromatic and super ripe but elegant nose. On the palate, this is a rich and powerful, very intense and concentrated Riesling with a tight structure and a massive yet still not finessed or stimulating finish. The wine has remarkable finesse and salinity, yet it is still somewhat massive and square to really simulate. Never mind, the wine has time. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

  • Markus Molitor Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese *** Goldkapsel 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

Pear preserves and apple jelly are allied to bright fresh lemon and lime in this three-star performance. The palate presence is creamy in texture and almost custardy in its richness and underlying extract, yet at the same time buoyant and electrically charged with citricity. The flavors begin heading in a confitured and confectionary direction but are then restrained by high acidity. The alternation of creaminess and brightness, honeyed richness and citricity continues through a lusciously lingering finish in which a hint of caramel serves as a further, delightfully integrated botrytis marker. This is another of those embryonic Molitor 2015s that will need time to display their mettle, but it already conveys amazing concentration and persistence, not to mention a remarkable sense of energy.
  • Markus Molitor Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese *** Goldkapsel 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

Jellied and candied apple are garlanded in decadent lily. Hints of bruised apple skin supply aromatic and flavor contrast while remaining consistent with the themes of concentration and decay-by-botrytis. Nutty piquancy and an undertone of wet stone, unexpected in such a rich Auslese, add further intrigue on a soft, viscous palate, leading into a long, caramel-kissed finish that introduces a welcome hint of fresh apple juiciness, and whose sheer sweetness stops just short of becoming cloying.
