  • Duncan Savage Red 2017 (1x75cl)
    (1x75cl) 2017

    Greg Sherwood MW (96+)

After a bit of vintage shuffling, last years 2015 blockbuster was the last Savage Red blend to be bottled, reverting in 2017 to a pure 100% Syrah wine made from vines grown exclusively on granitic soils in both Stellenbosch and the Swartland. Farmed biodynamically, the Stellenbosch vineyard fruit makes up the lion’s share of this wine and indeed will comprise 100% of the Savage Red in 2018. The grapes spend two weeks on their skins with 50% whole-bunches used before spending 13 months in 500 litre barrels and a further 9 months in 3,200 litre conical foudre, or just under two years elevage in the cellar. A super smart and super concentrated expression, this later release allows one to revisit the fabulously complex aromatics and balance of the exceptional 2017 vintage. Loaded with piquant blueberries, saline cassis and blackberry opulence, the nose shows strikingly complex notes of pink musk, sweet grilled herbs, black peppercorn spice and is embellished with an intoxicating exotic sweet white lily blossom fragrance. The palate intensity is also tremendously impressive with a harmonious crystalline purity and classical elegance in abundance. Showing a slightly more overt, opulent personality to the broody foursquare 2015, this wine represents an evolution and growing maturity in the red winemaking of Duncan Savage. One of his best efforts to date no doubt.

  • Duncan Savage Red 2019 (6x75cl)

    Greg Sherwood MW (95+)

In 2017 the Savage Proprietary Red became a pure 100% Syrah wine and from 2018, the fruit was exclusively sourced in Stellenbosch from vineyards grown on decomposed granite soils in the Polkadraai Hills from organically farmed grapes. Always released a year behind the rest of the Savage range, this 2019 is a dense, dark, potent red from a powerful, concentrated, minerally focused vintage. On the nose the aromatics are marked by intense notes of earthy red and black berry fruits, inky saline notes of black cherries, pink musk, savoury cured meat nuances, black olives and a sappy cedary wood spice complexity. With 70% of whole clusters used in the fermentation, the palate shows pronounced chalky mineral tannins but also vibrantly fresh crunchy acids from the granitic soils. Raspberries and blueberries surge to the fore on this dense, powerfully structured wine, gaining in richness and intensity as the wine slowly unfurls in the glass. Like some of the greatest expression of Syrah in Cote Rotie, this wine shows a focused prowess and concentration together with an opulent richness framed by an underlying stony minerality. A wine with undeniable focus and structure but also a surfeit of seductive charm. Drink from 2022 to 2035+.

  • Duncan Savage Red 2020 (6x75cl)

    Tim Atkin MW (96)

The Savage Red is now a varietal Syrah from a vineyard on decomposed granite in Kuils River, right next door to the Polkadraai Hills. Peppery, pure and intense, with no new oak to occlude the flavours, lots of plum and blackberry fruit, detailed tannins and a stony, refreshing finish. Brilliant winemaking.

Duncan Savage is a fan of the "purity and elegance" of the 2023 vintage, comparing it to 2017 and 2021. His eponymous red is now a delicious, pure Syrah from the Langverwagt farm in Kuils River on the edge of Stellenbosch, showing aromas of tobacco leaf, incense and clove, spicy 50% whole bunches and a core of blackberry, plum and tapenade.

  • Duncan Savage Western Cape Follow The Line 2022 (6x75cl)

As a prime embodiment of South African winemaking, Duncan Savage Western Cape Follow The Line 2022 presents a harmonious blend of Cinsault, Grenache, and Syrah. Crafted by world-renowned vintner Duncan Savage, renowned for his dedication to precision and purity, this wine hails from the western cape's coastal vineyards, where cool maritime breezes bestow distinctive character.

  • Duncan Savage Western Cape Follow The Line 2023 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

The Savage Wines 2023 Cinsault Follow The Line has a tiny 6% addition of Syrah for extra spice and color. The 2023 vintage is cool, making for lighter-colored wines in general. However, the bouquet here is beautiful. You get lifted red fruit with heritage rose, lavender pastilles and strawberry cream. It is not a massive or powerful wine, nor is it intended to be. It remains soft and pretty, showing definition and clarity. Fruit comes from Darling close to the beach with high winds and a 10-degree drop in temperatures. This bottle underlines the enormous potential of South African Cinsault.
  • Duncan Savage White 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2019 White Savage is hand-sorted before being processed into Nomblot concrete tanks for alcoholic fermentation; 30% of the grapes are left whole bunch. It has an intense nose, not overt fruit but rather scents of wet wool, candle wax and lanolin, all beautifully defined. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity, a slightly waxy texture and touches of cereal and grilled hazelnut toward the persistent finish. It is not a wine for every palate, but those who like it will love it.

  • Egon Muller Scharzhof Gallais Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Spatlese 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

This represents the best cask of Braune Kupp Spätlese, and it’s worth noting that in numbering it for registration purposes, Müller anticipated presenting it in his vintage lineup after the corresponding Scharzhofberger. The deeply ripe fresh purple plum and cherry fruit and the dark, ore-like, mysteriously mineral themes of this year’s Braune Kupp Kabinett are perpetuated here. Smoky and savory hints of Latakia tobacco, along with pronounced piquancy of fruit pit, add to the low-toned, brooding personality of a richly textured and resonantly persistent beauty. My experience with mature Müller Rieslings is almost entirely confined to Scharzhofberger bottlings, which are the wines that get more widely collected as well as those he graciously opens for visitors, so I can only wonder aloud whether the amazing 2014 vintage Braune Kupp Rieslings will keep pace over time with their Scharzhofberg counterparts.

  • Egon Muller Scharzhof Gallais Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Spatlese 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

The scents and flavors here deliciously resemble that of cinnamon- and lemon-zest-tinged, lightly singed purple plum pastry. And as is often the case with Riesling from this site, there is also a high-toned suggestion of plum and poire distillate. The palate displays a striking combination of succulence with textural gloss and animating acidity, while a penetrating, cheek-tugging, mouth-shakingly invigorating finish incorporates delightful and unexpected cooling notes of wintergreen as well as delivering loads of stone and mouthwatering salinity. Drinking this (yes, I swallowed some) left me feeling both renewed and a bit wrung out.

    Vinous (94)

Purple plum is wreathed in mint and bergamot for a haunting nose and a luscious, subtly cooling palate impression. The feel is glossy. Sweetness rises on the midpalate, but is checked by an influx of grapefruit juiciness and mouthwatering mineral salts on a penetrating finish whose vibrant persistence is enhanced by a lick of cinnamon stick. This was picked in early October with a high percentage of healthy grapes.

  • Egon Muller Scharzhof Gallais Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Spatlese 2020 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

Even as we get to Spätlese level in the present collection, there is a delightfully cooling aspect to the 2020 Riesling Wiltinger Braune Kupp Spätlese A.P. #5 Le Gallais, here engendered by pear and honeydew melon laced with brown spices, but also lime, mint and basil. The buoyant midpalate impression is succulent as well as silken, with suggestions of quince preserves and marzipan emphasizing the ripeness and very lightly botrytized nature of the fruit without sacrificing the cooling elements or citric brightness. Somehow the lusciously lingering finish manages to be stimulating yet soothing and caressing. Citrus zest, cinnamon and mace serve for welcome counterpoint, but here is one of those rare instances at this address where I have the impression of slight excess sweetness that needs time to integrate.
