  • Equipo Navazos Montilla-Moriles La Bota de Amontillado No 73 Bota Aniversario NV (6x37.5cl)

    Wine Advocate (97)

Navazos releases a super-old wine from time to time, and this time it's the turn of an Amontillado from Montilla-Moriles, produced with Pedro Ximénez grapes and sourced from the Pérez Barquero winery. It's presented as NV La Bota de Amontillado 73 “Bota Aniversario.” These old wines are always very concentrated and powerful, and the challenge here is to find one that is balanced. A similar wine was bottled as La Bota 26 to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the project, but it was never sold and instead was used for gifts for the core of Navazos customers from the bota 1. That 26 was taken from the bota 'No', and this 73, in order to not empty cask number 8 (the bota 'no'), was blended with cask number 3. Despite being bottled with some 21% alcohol, this wine is supposedly not fortified, and the alcoholic degree is achieved by pure evaporation and concentration through old age. This is getting the character of a very old wine, with hints of rusty nails and noble woods, a volatile touch and lots of nut notes. The palate is powerful, with volume, sharpness, elegance, intensity and a very long finish with echoes of low tide and rusty nails. A unique wine. 1,100 half bottles produced.
  • Espectacle Del Montsant 2014 (3x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (97)

The cooler and more austere 2014 Espectacle del Montsant could have some similarities with 2008. It has beautiful floral aromas and hints of orange peel and wet stones. It has a serious, balanced and austere palate, a closer expression of Espectacle, with contained ripeness and an earthier, more mineral finish. It's very different from 2015, which is possibly a more classical expression of the vineyard, while this 2014 is quite unique and different. But I like this austerity very much. Around 6,000 bottles were filled from one 4,500-liter oak foudre. It was bottled in May 2016.

  • Espectacle Del Montsant 2015 (3x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

The 2015 Espectacle del Montsant is a ripe and classic vintage for this exceptional wine produced from a single vineyard in Montsant. This has a forward personality—open, expressive and showy in the nose—from a typically warm and ripe year that resulted in a voluptuous and hedonistic Espectacle that's easy to like. It's rounder and lusher than the 2014 I had next to it, and the two vintages showed very different. The palate is also gentler, with integrated acidity and a soft mouthfeel. Some 6,000 bottles were filled in May 2017.

  • Espectacle Del Montsant 2016 (3x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (98)

The floral, aromatic and citrusy 2016 Espectacle del Montsant has unusual finesse and freshness. It's a powerful Garnacha that feels light on its feet but with great inner strength, refined tannins and great acidity. There is no oak, extraction or excess ripeness whatsoever, but the label says the wine is 16% alcohol! It has structure, freshness and that citrus touch that supports the alcohol, and the wine comes through as really balanced. This is a unique wine, always with the aromatic signature of this north-facing vineyard and the limestone soils that provide those chalky tannins and a dry, tasty, almost salty finish. 6,500 bottles produced.

    Decanter (95)

Lots of oak here, but so well integrated with the exceptional fruit, it’s very moreish. On the palate there’s cream, leather, toast and coffee alongside succulent red fruits including raspberry and strawberry which carries the wine beautifully. It has ripe, generous tannins offset by fine acidity with a savoury tobacco pouch finish. It’s just starting to hit its stride but has a long way to go.

  • Faustino Rioja I Gran Reserva 1994 (1x75cl)

    Wine Enthusiast (92)

Deep, sweet dark-cherry fruit forms a solid foundation for this impressive wine. There's a touch of menthol oak on the nose; plenty of leather and earth accents in the mouth, coupled with good acidity, keep the palate complex and lively. Finishes long, with full—but not harsh—tannins. Editors' Choice.

  • Faustino Rioja I Gran Reserva 2009 (6x75cl)

    Wine Enthusiast (93)

Classic Rioja aromas of vanilla, spice, tobacco and dried berry fruits carry this wine. On the palate, this warm-vintage gran reserva has energy from well-stored acidity, while the flavors include cherry, plum, mocha and a plethora of spices. Chocolate and tobacco flavors along with general warmth crowd the finish. Drink through 2030.

  • Felix Callejo Ribera Del Duero Seleccion Vinedos Familia 2005 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (92)

Inky ruby. Powerfully scented nose offers an alluring bouquet of cherry-vanilla, blackcurrant, cola, graphite and Asian spices. Plush and creamy, with deep red and dark berry liqueur flavors and slow-mounting tannins. Picks up smoky minerals and candied rose on the finish, which delivers a whiplash of sweet dark berry fruit. Extremely sexy wine that is built to age but is compelling even now.

(85% tempranillo and 15% graciano) Glass-staining purple. Youthfully backward nose displays inky dark berry and plum aromas, along with licorice, espresso and dark chocolate. Then shockingly fresh and precise on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry and blueberry flavors, with powerful tannins adding structure. • Finca Villacreces Ribera Del Duero 2020 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90)

The 2020 Finca Villacreces combines 96% Tempranillo, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot. Aromatically intense, it offers notes of blackberry, cassis and a balsamic undercurrent. The palate is juicy, with moderately firm tannins and a subtle hint of red fruit on the finish. Classic Ribera palate with a touch of metallic acidity on the back end.
  • Frontonio La Cerqueta Garnacha 2018 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

This was their original top red until they started producing the single-vineyard El Jardín de las Iguales, which has had different names through the years, being mostly eponymous, but in 2016, they began adding the name of the vineyard where the grape are grown. The current release is the 2018 La Cerqueta, a pure Garnacha from a 1.18-hectare dry-farmed, head-pruned, 75-year-old vineyard at 630 meters in altitude on slate-rich soils and facing southeast. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and some 60% full clusters that were foot trodden in open-top barrels and then macerated for 47 days. The wine matured in an underground cellar in an oak foudre for 14 months. This wine and Las Alas probably show the evolution in style and the search of finesse and expression of the places better than any others. It's fresh, floral and complete, a little spicy and with lots of energy, inner strength and balance with freshness. It's clean and delicious. This is very close to La Tejera, but the two vineyards have different expressions, a little more powerful here, a little more ethereal in the case of La Tejera. 3,056 bottles were filled in February 2020.

  • Galia Clos Santuy 2015 (3x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

The 2015 Clos Santuy is produced with the grapes from an ungrafted, head-pruned 1.12-hectare vineyard in the village of Piquera de San Esteban in the province of Soria, just outside the limits of Ribera del Duero, so it’s sold as Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León. The vineyard is planted at some 968 meters in altitude on shallow sandstone soils and is enclosed by a dry stonewall. Bougnaud has been working and vinifying this plot separately since 2010 and noticed its personality and aging potential, but this 2015 is the first vintage to be released. This is a textbook elegant and fresh Ribera from the cooler part; it’s ripe and powerful but really in balance and includes some 10% of white Albillo grapes that surely add to the silky texture and the fresh sensation on the palate. What a portfolio Galia showed in 2015, and this jewel of the crown filled some 1,073 bottles in September 2017. Bravo!

  • Galia Clos Santuy 2016 (3x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

The nose of the 2016 Clos Santuy was a little more discrete and reticent than the 2016 Villages. This comes from a 1.2-hectare plot of ungrafted vines in the village of Piquera de San Esteban that somehow was left out of the Ribera del Duero appellation. There is a sense of harmony and depth unlike that of the Villages, which felt more open and immediate. The palate is pure rock, austere and chalky, with a sense of minerality that was striking. It's approximately 80% Tempranillo and 20% Albillo fermented together with 20% full clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in one 225-liter barrel and one 600-liter demi-muid for 22 months. 1,095 bottles were filled in September 2018.

  • Galia Villages 2016 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

The nose of the 2016 Villages was stunning. It's a blend of Tempranillo with 9% Garnacha and 4% white Albillo from vineyards in Piquera de San Esteban, Fuentelcésped, Hontangas, Cuevas de Provanco, Quintanilla de Onésimo and Trigueros del Valle. It fermented by soil types with indigenous yeasts and some 20% full clusters (the Garnacha was 100% whole clusters) and matured in a mixture of 225-liter barriques, 600-liter demi-muids and 1,200-liter foudres for 21 months. The élevage was very respectful with the wine, which comes through as floral and terribly aromatic, ripe without excess and with a medium to full-bodied palate, pungent flavors and great length and persistence. The tannins are round and velvety, and there is a sense of integration and balance that I liked very much. 16,140 bottles and 230 magnums were filled in July 2018.

While Rioja is still the region that springs to mind for most consumers when thinking about Spain, wines from other regions are slowly yet assertively making themselves known. There are the dark, arresting wines of Priorat, the crisp, apply whites made from the Godello grape, the often almost Burgundian Ruedas, the ‘cult’ wines like Vega Sicilia… not just rustic, oxidative wines any longer, but rather intriguing and individual vinous experiences.
