    The 2021 La Bruja de Rozas is their edgiest and most austere mineral and soil-driven version of their entry-level red. It's herbal, with no concession for fruit, and it has electricity and grip. It's a good preview of what's to come from 2021. It has a lot of 2018 and 2016 characteristics, a cool summer, a year with rain and even some during harvest that complicated matters and made them lose some grapes, but there's more grip, more minerality, more depth, layers and subtleness. It needs time in the glass, and my guess is that at age eight it's going to reach an outstanding level. A grown-up Bruja, it’s more for soil fanatics than the general public, and it’s one to lay down in your cellar (by the case) while you drink your 2020s. There were 55,184 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2022.

    I have never seen an herbal and peppery nose in a wine from Las Iruelas like the 2021 Las Iruelas; more specifically, it has a pungent note redolent of the Basque chili pepper "piparra," with wild strawberries, white peppercorns and capers, reflecting a very cold year. It's the expression of the slatish soils in a cold Mediterranean environment in a cold year. It has a pale and more developed color, it's narrow, it makes you salivate and it's super aromatic and expressive, floral, delicate and ultra mineral; it smells like crushed stones. This is the only wine from the village of El Tiemblo, one of two on slate soils in 2021 and the only one on slate from 2022, as 2022 was the last vintage of El Reventón, the other wine from slate. This was bottled later; they kept it in concrete for four or five extra months because the wine was a little reduced. It should be very long lived. 2,657 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.

This is the 2022 that feels less like 2022... Only with time in the glass did it develop some meaty aromas (Bovril?) and spiciness, which pointed at a warmer year and more Gevrey character.     The 2023 Garnacha Navatalgordo, from an old vineyard in the village of Navatalgordo, Gredos, is still in élevage. It reveals fresher aromas of cherry, sour cherry, an herbal hint and soft rose. Stem inclusion tightens the gums, though it will soften with time in bottle. A delicate note of fresh sour cherry lingers on the finish.

    The 2018 Rozas 1er Cru is from a much better year that produced perfect ripeness of the grapes and therefore much better parameters (alcohol, pH and acidity). Within the freshness and seriousness of 2018, this is very open, expressive and spicy, like an upgrade from the La Bruja de Rozas, though not quite reaching the finesse of Las Umbrías. It's tasty and long and has something herbal (fennel, celery), a salty touch, a little rust and a very mineral texture, with the grainy granite and finer chalk. It improves tremendously in the glass, which gives me an idea that the wine is going to improve in bottle. 2018 is a great vintage that is going to require a little more time to express its full potential. This is often the best value of the winery. 15,238 bottles and 150 magnums produced. It was bottled in January 2020.

    The 2021 Rozas 1er Cru is 100% Garnacha from a Vino de Paraje in Valle Sur, Sierra de Gredos. Grippy yet delicate, it has a lightly aqueous feel and a touch of fruit, gaining depth and definition on the finish.     The Rozas 1er Cru has a slight change in 2022 and turned into a village wine, the 2022 Rozas. They selected the best five vineyards that used to go to the Rozas 1er Cru, vineyards they have worked since 2012. In this warmer vintage, they did a softer vinification, with less maceration and more fermentation without skins, to avoid over-ripeness and notes of black fruit in the wine. It has more fruit and some silty tannins, which are more like Italian tannins in the more Mediterranean years like this 2022. This village is more subject to the changes in the years, with more herbal and ethereal notes in the wines in cooler years and juicier and with more marked tannins in the warmer ones. It has 14.5% alcohol and is more jovial, definitely not banal. 10,992 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2023.

    There is a new village red from the village of Villanueva de Ávila, the village where they have established their operations. For them, the 2022 Villanueva is the more complete wine, subtle and delicate but with energy and power. It comes from different vineyards in the village, some owned, some grapes purchased, grown at an average altitude of 1,000 meters. It fermented with full clusters and had a long maceration (but not as long as in cooler years) of 35 to 40 days, and part of the wine fermented pressed without skins. It fermented and matured in an oak vat. No sulfur was added at any point of the vinification or élevage, and only a small quantity was added at bottling time. It has a moderate 13% alcohol and a very subtle, elegant and nuanced nose, with ethereal notes of flowers, herbs and spice (nutmeg!). It has a medium-bodied palate, nicely textured, with very fine silty tannins and a long, tasty finish. It's austere beyond the character of the year (you'd never say it's a 2022...) with very good aging potential. 2,798 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2023.

    The new red blend 2020 Alma Contador is going to be sold mostly through the négociants from Bordeaux. It was produced with grapes from three vineyards in San Vicente de la Sonsierra at different altitudes and is a blend of Tempranillo with 8% Garnacha with limited yields because of mildew. It matured in new French barriques for 20 months. He wanted a more classical image and perhaps a more classical profile of wine. It's perfumed and floral, with notes of aromatic herbs, a little balsamic and quite showy, with very fine tannins and freshness, as he used more grapes from the higher-altitude zones. It's powerful and elegant, and in a way it reminds me of the style of the initial vintages of La Cueva de Contador; it's clean and elegant. It's 14.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.55. It's very young but still drinkable, as the quality of the tannins is very good. I think this is the one wine I'd buy from their portfolio if I could only buy one. It transported me to the wines from the early 2000s. 10,000 bottles produced.

    (88% tempranillo and 12% graciano) Opaque purple. C aptivating nose melds black raspberry, minerals, mocha, mint and dried flowers. Lush, fat and sweet, but its opulent red berry, cherry and dark chocolate flavors are enlivened by strong minerality. As deeply concentrated and palate-staining as this wine is, it shows unlikely elegance. In fact, this reminds me a little of a modern Bordeaux The finish is sweet, smoky and very long.
