A very elegant wine from the Dominus team that contrasts with most wines from this generally opulent vintage. Opens with red fruit, raspberries and cherries, laced with mineral and savory notes before darker fruit, tobacco, blackcurrant and rich earth flavors fill the palate. Very silky tannins, a medium body and a sense of refreshment with good acidity. Composed of cabernet sauvignon with touches of cabernet franc and petit verdot. A super well-balanced wine that’s tempting to drink now, but best from 2029.

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is also showing beautifully from bottle, bursting with aromas of cherries, licorice, peonies and sweet soil tones. On the palate, it's full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with a deep and layered core of concentrated fruit, succulent acids and a long, expansive finish.

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru offers up a deep bouquet of ripe cherries, licorice, rose petals and toasty new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with velvety tannins, an ample core of fruit, lively acids and a long, mouthwatering finish. More texturally lavish and expansive, this, too, is very promising.

(from 78+ year old vines totaling .31 ha with .125 ha in Charmes and the other .18 ha in Mazoyères). Soft wood is present on the even spicier mix of ripe red and dark currant that is cut with game, earth, humus and forest floor nuances. There is impressive volume and concentration to the broad-shouldered flavors that exhibit good power and muscle on the compact and palate coating finish that goes on and on. This is potentially superb but it is definitely a wine to ‘buy and forget’ in the back of a cool cellar.

Brilliant purple. Ripe black and blue fruit aromas are accompanied by suggestions of exotic spices, cola and violet, and a hint of pipe tobacco emerges as the wine opens up. Broad and fleshy on the palate, offering sweet blueberry, cassis, fruitcake and licorice flavors that become livelier on the back half. Dusty tannins build steadily on a very long, penetrating finish that leaves a suggestion of candied flowers behind. 30% whole clusters and 50% new oak.

Inky violet color. A smoky mineral top note and a building suggestion of pungent flowers complement cassis, blackberry, olive and licorice. Chewy and broad on the palate, offering concentrated dark berry preserve, cherry-cola, smoky bacon and candied violet flavors that show strong energy and firm tension. Finishes very long and smoky, with gripping tannins and resonating floral and spice notes. Made with 50% whole clusters and 50% new oak.

Deep, brilliant violet. Black and blue fruit, olive and exotic floral qualities on the highly perfumed, mineral-accented nose. Shows excellent clarity and energetic lift to the sweet cherry liqueur, cassis and spicecake flavors that slowly unfurl through the back half. Smoothly blends power and finesse and shows sharp definition and mineral cut on an impressively long, youthfully tannic finish.

Good deep, bright red. Urgent aromas of crushed dark fruits and white pepper; brilliantly delineated but extremely unevolved. Then wonderfully juicy and bright in the mouth, with complex mocha and game hints adding interest to the concentrated, sappy berry flavors. Dense, classically dry and thoroughly ripe grand cru that's still a bit closed in on itself. The very long, slow-mounting finish features substantial suave tannins and terrific underlying structure. This should evolve in bottle for at least a couple of decades.

Good bright, full red. Blueberry, smoked meat and sexy oak on the nose. Suave and fine-grained in the mouth, with very deep flavors of blueberry, blackberry and minerals. A step up in extract and depth from the preceding wines-not to mention sheer intensity of flavor. Really builds on the back half, finishing classically dry, broad and minerally, with dusty tannins nicely covered by fruit.

Vinous (95)

Good medium red. Very ripe, soil-driven aromas of black raspberry and smoky minerality. Tactile, vibrant and deep; at once chewy and utterly silky. This compellingly dense grand cru really clings to the palate on the very long, ripely tannic finish. A fabulous combination of energy and flesh: this one hit my G-Spot. One for the cellar. Like the Charmes-Chambertin, this wine is bottled under the Domaine Christophe Roumier label.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-94)

Good full red. Sexy aromas and flavors of blackberry, blueberry, gunpowder and smoky soil tones. Silky-rich and classically dry, displaying excellent chewy depth of material in a very pretty package. Finishes very long, with suave, fine-grained tannins and lovely lift. Should be a beauty.
