Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, matured with 20% whole bunches, has a tightly wound bouquet with dark berry fruit suffused with fine mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, a taut line of acidity with hints of dark truffle and a subtle charcoal note towards the finish. Fine grip in the mouth, this should mature nicely over the next decade and more.

Vinous (93-95)

The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru contains 60% whole bunches. It comes from three plots that, still, only made two and a half barrels this year. It has a very well defined bouquet that seems to blossom in the glass, although it will need some time for the stems to be assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very peppery in style with touches of white pepper and bay leaf towards the persistent finish. This is a classy wine, one that is not unlike Dujac’s Echézeaux!

This luxurious example of Vin Jaune hails from Chateau-Chalon, an appellation widely regarded as Jura's crown jewel. The selection of Savagnin grapes from the Berthet-Bondet's small-secluded vineyard undergoes traditional viticultural practices. Crafted by the esteemed Jean Berthet-Bondet, this illustrious Vin Jaune expresses rich nutty nuances supported by an earthy minerality. A pleasingly crisp acidity, intrinsic to the Savagnin grape varietal, intertwines with the profound oxidative notes resulting from six years sous-voile maturation. The 1988 vintage carries the promise of decades of cellaring potential, providing a splendid testament of Berthet-Bondet Chateau-Chalon Vin Jaune 1988's remarkable longevity and unparalleled finesse.

Vinous (91)

Saturated medium ruby. Penetrating, superripe, slightly porty aromas of medicinal black cherry, cocoa powder, menthol and damp earth. Generous, pliant and really stuffed with fruit; very solid wine with lovely restrained sweetness. Powerful flavor of black plum outlasts the big chewy-but-ripe tannins. This will get sweeter as the tannins melt. But the '99 may be even more impressive.

Wine Advocate (87)

The 1985 admirably reflects the character of this charming vintage. Deep ruby, low in acidity, ripe, round, fruity, and precocious, this medium-bodied, supple wine is very tasty and displays the cedary, black currant fruit so common in the wines of St.-Julien. Anticipated maturity: Now-2000. Last tasted, 3/90.

The 1986 Beychevelle, which I tasted from magnum at the château, has what you might describe as a light-hearted nose with joie-de-vivre. Even from a larger format, among many 1986s tasted, this is one of the most approachable with wild strawberry, mulberry, cola and graphite aromas that unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with spice and clove on the entry. It comes across as fleshier than I was anticipating and atypically for the vintage, tapering towards the finish. Arguably rustic compared to some of its Saint Julien bedfellows, it nonetheless has charm and a sense of classicism. Tasted July 2016.

One of the best ever produced from this estate. Intense ripe cherry aromas and flavors come through in this St.-Julien that's big and alcholic, with full silky tannins. Built more like Port than wine. Best after 1998. 25,000 cases made.

The most beautifully situated chateau, with its great view of the Gironde estuary, Beychevelle is another of those Médoc estates that has found top form after a fallow period in the 1980s and early '90s. The wine's generosity, sweetness and fruit is balanced with the carefully crafted structure of wood that underpins it all. Imported by Diageo Chateau & Estates.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (89)

Bright, pale, green-tinged yellow. Ripe aromas of mirabelle and nectarine, with an element of exotic spices. Fat, ripe and sweet, with an almost glyceral texture to the nectarine and pink grapefruit flavors. A fat, spicy wine with lowish acidity. This hail-affected parcel was picked at the beginning of the harvest owing to the more fragile grape skins, noted Bernard Billaud. Will make a fat and agreeable chardonnay, although with limited vineyard typicity.

Matthew Jukes (19.5+)

Oak constantly forms a vital role in the kaleidoscopic wine, and the 2007 vintage was fermented in 15-20-year-old oak barrels with gentle lees contact, building fascinating depth and complexity while retaining the riveting signature minerality of the LCSH terroir. As you would expect, each vintage release has its personality, yet there is an indelible character linking every wine from this monopole and joyously present in the 2007. Funnily enough, I was privileged to taste the 2002 vintage earlier in the year, and it was singing. With the freshness of an epic Champagne and the palate complexity of a sensational Burgundy, it is so rare to taste wines that combine both talents to perfection. As it opened in the glass, over a couple of hours, it never stopped shape-shifting and evolving. While 2007 shows a much younger and more linear palate, it is built along precisely the same guidelines. The nose is show-stopping, all-enveloping, and effortlessly graceful, and the palate follows this theme. Serene fruit notes expand and contract as the flavours wash over your senses; there is already much to admire. Of course, the finish is straight-jacketed and controlling; after all, this is the Li-ion cell of power that will propel this wine to greatness. Interestingly, it is clear that after only 16 years of life, this wine is built for the long haul. Still, it will not follow the path of some Champagnes who start their lives packed with intensity and muscle only for it to be eaten up over time, leaving a weaker version of flavour that clings onto life. 2007 Le Clos Saint-Hilaire is leaner, fitter, chiselled, and toned. It is modelled with stamina and grace in equal measure, and so while you can drink it now and marvel at its wonder, you will be greeted with a very similar and no doubt ravishingly enticing wine ten or even twenty years down the track.

Vinous (99)

It’s almost impossible to imagine that the 1985 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva La Storica has just celebrated its thirty-sixth birthday. It displays a brilliant ruby red color and amazing clarity in the glass, with only the slightest bricking around the rim. The bouquet alone is enough to keep you at the edge of your seat, as if opening a cedar treasure box to find dusty rose and sour cherry offset by spiced orange, crushed dried sage and just the slightest hint of animal musk. This is total class, cool-toned and poised, seeming to hover across the palate with an air of red inner florals, as tart woodland berries mix with hints of black tea and lemon oils. There’s a bolt of nervous acidity that keeps the experience remarkably fresh, but also adds a highly attractive sweet and sour note. And finally, while structured and youthful in feel, it finishes completely fresh, vibrant even, with dried currants enlivened by nuances of grapefruit and mint that linger on and on. This is an experience wine in every sense of the word, hailing from a dry and warm harvest yet exemplifying the purity of Sangiovese, as well as its ability to mature for well over three decades. The 1985 La Storica comes directly from the winery’s aging vault, and it was reconditioned with a new cork in 2000.

Fantastic aromas of coffee, tea leaf, ripe plums and ginger follow through to a full body, firm and silky tannins and a rich and subtle finish. The is dense and powerful yet very refined and reserved. It needs at least five years to show its true character. One of the most refined Biondi-Santi riservas I can remember. The tannin texture is exceptional. Try in 2020.
