This too is quite aromatically restrained though aggressive swirling does eventually coax the pure and elegant aromas to emerge and when they do, they are almost a hypothetical blend of the Amoureuses and the Bonnes Mares. The concentrated, powerful and decidedly muscular flavors retain plenty of refinement and minerality that conclude in a wonderfully complex and superbly long finale. The mid-palate texture is akin to rolling rocks around in the mouth and the finish just goes on and on. This too is brilliant, and the word Zen definitely comes to mind. (95-98)/2041+ |

Wine Advocate (94)The 1971 Richebourg Grand Cru from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was poured from magnum. It had a powerful, almost burly bouquet as you would expect from this vineyard—perhaps autumnal, brown leaves and a cold Sunday afternoon, touches of Earl Grey infused the dark berry fruit (darker than the 1971 Grands Echézeaux tasted alongside incidentally). The palate is medium-bodied with a fine line of acidity, hints of dried orange peel infusing the black and red fruit, all with impressive energy considering that this is now the same age as yours truly. Perhaps I found more breeding on the aforementioned Grands Echézeaux, and yet this is still a gorgeous mature Burgundy that will continue to give immense pleasure over the next decade for those privileged with the experience. Matthew Jukes (20+)2016 The Eye of Ra is a 100% Shiraz, using 100% French oak and all of the fruit comes from Ebenezer. This wine is made from the finest parcel of fruit that Ben has ever seen in his vineyard. Outstanding aromatics lead the way and the palate is nothing short of spellbinding. The finish has epic freshness and the tannins are like nothing I have encountered before from the great Glaetzer portfolio. The Eye of Ra is all about power countered with impeccable restraint and I can still recall all of its flavours several weeks later. It is one of a number of wines that I have seen lately which signal a new and fascinating epoch for Barossa Shiraz. I followed this wine over three hours that evening and it never stopped evolving in the glass. This celestial wine made a huge impression on me and it is hard for me to see how this wine can be bettered and so I am overjoyed to give it a perfect score. |

Beautiful aromatics from this exceptional Shiraz come after over a decade of bottle age. While normal sized bottles may have gone past their prime by now, in Magnum this wine has thrived. Great value and absolutely delicious, this is a very pretty shiraz that has developed elegant olive and pepper aromas while retaining its pure black fruit.

Wine Advocate (98)The 2005 Roennfeldt Road Shiraz is very deep purple-black in color. It presents and incredible array of pronounced spice, earth, floral and savory aromas: blackberry preserves, dried mulberries, coffee, grilled duck, vanilla, cloves, fenugreek, violets and dried rose petals plus some shavings of dark chocolate. Very full and very rich in the mouth, at 17.5% declared alcohol this is not a wine for the faint hearted. Though youthful it’s already multi-layered and the opulent flesh is well supported by a good backbone of crisp acid and a high level of velvety tannins. The finish is very, very long. This Shiraz has great balance for the alcohol and although the wine leaves a bit of heat in the finish it neither overpowers nor detracts from the layers of complex flavors. Possessing the foundation and stuffing to age, it should drink well from 2014 to 2025+. |
