The 2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune La Dominode 1er Cru feels more constricted at present when compared to the Clos des Guettes. The nose highlights dark plum and raspberry, yet is just missing a little amplitude. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins. The pedigree of the climat comes through here; it's pretty sweet and opulent towards the finish, so it belies the coolness of that summer. This handcrafted, single-vineyard wine hails from the prestigious Menglers Hill, situated within the acclaimed South Australian wine region, Barossa Valley. The 2014 vintage encapsulates the vineyard's story with its exceptional purity and intensity. A moderately toasty nose reflects notes of cassis, wild red currant and soft floral wisps. The sleek, muscular and broad-shouldered flavors make quite a contrast with the slightly skinny and lean finish where the wood toast telegraphed by the nose resurfaces. Good medium ruby. High-pitched violet perfume lifts the aroma of ripe black cherry. Wonderfully suave, intense and refined, with a pungently fresh quality that reminded me of cut grass. This highly concentrated wine has perfectly integrated acidity, as well as a stronger limestone character than usual. In a rather masculine style but also seamless and suave. Finishes with outstanding length and class, the tannins totally buffered by fruit and minerals. Mounir Saouma noted that this wine has been great since the beginning.HK$27,245.00 -

Bright ruby-red. Very wild, leesy, utterly distinctive nose offers scents of purple fruits and spices complicated by apricot and almond nuances. Wonderfully spicy, fine-grained, idiosyncratic wine with dark berry and rosemary flavors complicated by faint lactic and malic nuances (this is just at the end of its secondary fermentation). Suave, deep wine with an almost oily aftertaste. This should be a knockout. For his part, Saouma describes it as fake gentle today.HK$23,280.00 -

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Virondot 1er Cru, which unlike the other Premier Crus was taken from barrel, has a lovely bouquet with hazelnut, orange rind, wet granite and just a touch of praline. The palate is very well balanced with an irresistible peachy entry that segues into a gorgeous quince-tinged finish. Often one of the Domaine best offerings, this Virondot is another to add in a succession of great wines from this climat.HK$4,360.00 -

A ripe yet agreeably elegant, pure and airy nose consists of dark currant, spice, lavender, earth and a pretty range of floral nuances. The equally pure mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors possess a really lovely sense of underlying tension while delivering fine persistence on the sappy, balanced and solidly complex finish. This youthfully austere effort is shaped by similar but denser fine-grained tannins while offering better depth. This too is lovely and well-worth checking out.HK$4,550.00 -

Good medium red. Captivating aromas of black cherry, dark raspberry, minerals and flowers have shed the reductive character that made this wine difficult to taste shortly after the bottling. Juicy, penetrating and wonderfully elegant, delivering outstanding flavor intensity without any impression of heaviness. Red berry, red cherry and flowers dominate the middle palate, with an element of saline minerality expanding with air. Really stains the palate and titillates the salivary glands on the very long, rising finish. This wine is so well-balanced that it's delicious right now, but it has the solidity, sappiness and tannic structure for a slow and graceful evolution in the cellar. A transcendent premier cru. (14.1% alcohol; September 23 harvest; 3.5 pH; a major attack of oidium in Clos des Ducs in August resulted in a crop level of just 19 hectoliters per hectare, according to Angerville, who noted that the younger vines in the upper part of the vineyard were particularly affected)HK$19,999.00 -

Combining substance with structural charm, this will offer a broad drinking window. Mollydooker's 2018 Carnival of Love Shiraz is more red-fruited and structured than I expected, given the wine's stated 16% alcohol. Raspberries and cedar mark the nose, with hints of chocolate, espresso and baking spices. In the mouth, it's full-bodied, dense and powerful, with ripe but firm tannins supporting the bright berry flavors, then easing into a long, velvety and mouthwatering finish. It should drink well for around a decade, but if you're shy of tannins, you may want to wait another year or two before opening.HK$3,150.00 -

Mollydooker's 2018 The Boxer Shiraz delivers what fans of this producer have come to expect: huge fruit, plenty of ripeness, tasty oak and oodles of flavor. Cedar, chocolate and mint accent cola, plum and berry fruit on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is round, supple and expansive. The only one of the Mollydooker wines that even hints at needing some bottle age is the 2016 Velvet Glove Shiraz. Hints of hay or alfalfa mark the nose, along with huge raspberry and blueberry fruit. It's full-bodied, rich and tannic on the palate, picking up hints of chocolate and raisin on the long finish. Good deep red. Slightly reduced aromas of strawberry, smoke, mocha and minerals. Supple and sweet, but with a peppery element and firm tannic spine giving shape to the raspberry and strawberry fruit. Finishes solid, aromatic and long, with tannins that reach the front teeth.HK$2,300.00 -

The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is shaping up beautifully, unfurling in the glass with scents of peonies, sweet berry fruit, blood orange, smoke and warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, lively and perfumed, it's velvety and charming, with melting tannins and an ample core of fruit. This is the highest in alcohol of all of Rossignol's 2019s, but it appears to be seamlessly integrated.HK$4,850.00 -

A prodigious, decadently rich effort, Oliverhill’s 2003 Shiraz Jimmy Section (15% alcohol) is a 100% Shiraz aged in French oak, of which one-third is new. It offers up a luxurious aromatic display of loamy earth, new saddle leather, blackberry liqueur, charcoal, and barbecue spices. A new addition to the Penfolds lineup, the 2016 Bin 111A Shiraz is a blend of Clare (51%) and Barossa (49%) fruit from vineyards that have previously contributed to Grange. Matthew Jukes (18.5+)
Drawn from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Coonawarra, Padthaway and Wrattonbully, this is a seriously focussed and complete Bin 407 with impressive length, and it manages to retain control to the very end. There was no Bin 169 or Bin 707 made in 2020, so this wine (and Bin 389 below) has scooped up the very best Cabernet from the estate, and there is no doubt it is a very special creature indeed. Delicious and savoury, the tannins pinch the palate, and it remains reassuringly dry and firm while on the finish, allowing the palate to open up beautifully on the nose.
