  • Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2020 (3x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)

5-Star Wine Mid lemon yellow. The bouquet also takes time to emerge, then shows a little more power than the Bienvenues. The oak is a fraction more present but still superbly integrated. The taffeta texture could not possibly have more tensile strength, with an exemplary purity of fruit. To have so much power (not in an alcoholic sense) and yet so much grape. Little light fresh apple notes to finish. Tasted: May 2022

  • Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2021 (1x150cl)

    Burghound (95-98)

(Don't Miss!) Once again a subtle but not invisible application of wood frames cool and ripe aromas of green apple, acacia blossom, petrol and airy zest-tinged nuances. Interestingly, the middleweight flavors aren't quite as dense as those of the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet yet the intensity is even higher, indeed it's almost painful, while flashing impressive power on the gorgeously complex, sneaky long and equally well-balanced finale. This is also stunning but patience required.

  • Louis Latour Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (96)

The aromas of hot stones in the vineyard really highlight the dried apples and citrus with flint and straw, following to a full body with a tight palate and reserved finish. It needs time to open and show it’s greatness. Give it three to four years to open.

  • Marc Colin et Fils Batard Montrachet Grand Cru 2017 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (94-96)

The 2017 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru stays with Domaine Marc Colin as it as owned by Damien's godfather and he wished for it to remain with him, therefore a fermage agreement remains in place. It has a clean and precise bouquet, a little more expressive than some of its peers with crushed stone, sea spray and light citrus peel scents. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, the oak neatly integrated (one out of two barrels new) with a precise tangy orange rind finish. Sophisticated and compelling. (DIAM closure)

  • Marc Colin et Fils Batard Montrachet Grand Cru 2020 (1x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)

2 barrels of one year old wood, chosen from the best of the previous year. Deep full yellow, in comparison to its stable mates, but in fact still light. This is taking time to wake up on the nose. There is a good backing from the oak, a slight youthful bitterness. A very substantial weight. Good acidity too just makes its appearance right at the back. This will need time. Tasted: October 2021

  • Marc Morey Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2021 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (87-89)

The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is the first vintage after the 0.13ha of vines were replanted in 2019. It is aged in one 350-liter barrel (one-year-old). As the vines are so nascent, I was not anticipating complexity on the nose, and though crisp, it does lack some terroir expression. The palate is balanced with good depth, a fine spine of acidity, touches of peach on the mid-palate with a composed finish. A decent starter, though there is better to come.

  • Michel Niellon Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

The 2015 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is a valedictory wine as the 90-year-old vines were pulled up after the fruit was picked (see producer introduction). You know, it actually surpasses the Chevalier-Montrachet in terms of mineralité and complexity, very refined with hints of orange blossom developing with time. The palate is very well balanced with a keen line of acidity, good tension and particular fine salinity here that urges you back for another sip. There is just a barrel and a half of this Bâtard-Montrachet so grab one now because it will not reappear for a long time.

From a parcel in the celebrated Clos Poirier, which touches le Montrachet, Morey's 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru mingles notes of orange oil and pear with hints of blanched almonds, dried white flowers, beeswax and struck match. • Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2011 (5x75cl)

    Vinous (97)

The 2011 Batard-Montrachet boasts serious richness, depth and structure. A wine of pure brawn and intensity, the 2011 impresses for its exceptional balance and harmony, but it is also very reticent and nowhere near ready to show the full breadth of its personality. The finish alone is simply sensational. Readers should give the 2011 at least a few years in bottle to settle down. The Batard is imposing, sensational and regal in every way.

  • Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2017 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93-95+)

Pierre-Yves Colin's greatest wine this year is the 2017 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, which hails from a parcel of 90-year-old vines planted on the Chassagne side that he farms but doesn't own. Unfurling in the glass with complex aromas of Meyer lemon, nutmeg, honeycomb, dried white flowers, pastry cream and subtle new wood, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with a layered, broad-shouldered mid-palate, excellent concentration and a long, vibrant finish.

  • Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 (1x150cl)

    Jancis Robinson (19)

Fermented in 350-litre oak. The Puligny side of the grand cru. Two 350-litre casks. Less than last year because one part was not so good and they sold the fruit. The only wine of which there is less 2018 than 2017. 80-year-old vines. Picked 27 August! Bâtard likes dry warm summers. Barrel sample. Very slight hint of smoky reduction but nowhere near struck match. Both chalky and intensely citrus-fruited. Majestic and creamy. Another wine packed with fruit and richness. Deep and so tightly shaped by the freshness. Perfectly balanced. Fragrant and intense. Majestic already and will become more so. That gingery spice on the finish.

The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, comprising just a single one-year-old 300-liter barrel, is stunning on the nose with vibrant green apple, wet limestone and citrus scents, quite penetrating but, oh so elegant. The palate is well balanced with a powerful opening, more tropical than anticipated with wild peach, persimmon and hints of grapefruit, spicy with stem ginger on the finish. Wonderful.

My evening began with Pierre Rovani handing me a glass of Ramonet’s 1992 Bâtard-Montrachet, which was an incredible wine with which to start the night. Served from magnum, it was deeply-colored and packed with fruit and sweet toasted oak notes, showing stunning length on the palate and extraordinary balance. In a word: awesome.

  • Ramonet Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2003 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (88-91)

Exotic liqueur-like nose; in a slightly oxidative phase today. Dense and plump, with a captivating honeysuckle flavor. Shows good depth and power, not to mention length, but finishes with a trace of alcoholic bitterness. Still, Noel and I agreed that this, like the Ruchottes, is more typical for its site than most of his other 2003s. (Ramonet's Bienvenue-Batard-Montrachet showed a more exaggerated nut skin character and was impossible to assess with confidence, while the impressively fat Le Montrachet was rather heavy as well as a bit tired. I will report on these wines next year after they're in bottle. ).

  • Ramonet Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2011 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93)

The 2011 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is very attractive, opening up in the decanter to offer a classic young Ramonet bouquet of lemon oil, mint, honeyed pear, white flowers and a framing of toasty new oak. On the palate, the wine is fresh and vibrant, with a broad and elegantly glossy attack, but it ranks as a comparatively open-knit rendition of this great wine, without the depth, structure or complexity of the very best vintages. Of course, it's an excellent Bâtard nonetheless.
