  • Malescot St Exupery 2004 (12x75cl)

    Wine Enthusiast (91)

90-92 A fine, perfumed wine which has ripe fruits, flavored with herbs and with fresh acidity. The tannins are dense but not overwhelming, giving a well-balanced wine, already integrated.

  • Margaux 2004 (1x300cl)

    Wine & Spirit Magazine (96)

Tasted from barrel in 2005, this wine showed the freshness of the vintage in its bright woodland-berry scent before settling into tannins that felt mineral, powerful and black. Directeur général Paul Pontallier commented at the time, "I consider this to be typical, absolutely, of Château Margaux." Two years on, the wine is definitively Margaux, from the fashionable scent of new oak, to the musculature and vinous strength of the fruit. The sweetness of the fraises des bois and plum seems improbable in the context of a completely dry, concentrated yet ethereal taste that doesn't stop. The wine will taunt you with its delicate, silken power whether you drink it in ten, 20 or 30 years.

  • Marques Murrieta Rioja Dalmau Reserve 2004 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

(this wine was reviewed in July 2008 and is a library release, with a price to match) Deep ruby. Potent cassis and blueberry aromas show excellent clarity and lift, and cigar box, licorice and vanilla notes add complexity. Supple, broad and appealingly sweet, offering concentrated dark berry, cola, vanilla and peppery spice flavors and a smoky quality that emerges on the back half. Finishes long and smooth, featuring slow-building tannins and lingering blue fruit and oak spice qualities. For a 13-year-old wine, this one is extremely youthful.

  • Masseto 2004 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (100)

The 2004 Masseto, one of my personal favorites, is positively stellar. I have always adored the 2004 for its silky tannins, stunning aromatic presence and total finesse, all of which are on display today. Beautifully pure to the long finish and profoundly beautiful in every way, the 2004 has it all. It was a textbook vintage that only presented one real challenge, and that was moderating the naturally high yields that resulted from an unblocking of energy the vines had held in store from the previous year. Where producers moderated yields, the wines are often stunning, as is very much the case here. If forced to choose only one vintage of Masseto I could own or drink it would be the 2004.

  • Massolino Barolo Parafada 2004 (1x300cl)

    Vinous (92)

The 2004 Barolo Parafada is the softest and most open-knit of Massolino's Barolos. At the time, the Parafada was done partly in French oak, so it has sleeker contours than the other wines in the range, yet it also retains a lovely sense of freshness. Crushed flowers, licorice and spices meld into a core of supple, nicely layered fruit. The 2004 should drink well for at least another decade. This is a strong showing, especially considering Massolino was making the Parafada in a slightly different style that was not really their strongest suit.

  • Mazzei Siepi 2004 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (91+)

(a merlot/sangiovese blend) Saturated black-ruby. Typical Siepi nose of black plum, black pepper, espresso and vanilla-caramel oak. More dark chocolate and coffee in the mouth, with a sweetening influence of ripe black cherry. Fat, layered and finely tannic. A bit more acid spine might have given this more detail, but it ranks as one of the more refined Siepis I remember at a similar stage of development.

As creamy as this is, it remains light on its feet. Finishes very long and subtle, with a whiplash of pepper and mineral flavors conveying an impression of strong extract.

(a blend of 64% cabernet sauvignon, 32% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot) Bright ruby-red. Aromatic nose combines blackberry, violet and licorice. Juicy, aromatic and fine-grained, with subtle inner-mouth perfume. Very suave, floral wine, finishing with very fine tannins. The alcohol here is about 12.7%, compared to 13.1% in 2003.
