James Suckling (95)This is very, very long and intense with velvety tannins and plenty of sweet tobacco, cedar and dark berry aromas and flavors. Already open and delicious to drink. This is difficult to say it’s 2013. Fantastic for the vintage. Only 45% of the normal production. |

Wine Advocate (95)The 2013 Haut Brion Blanc, which is a blend of 66% Sauvignon Blanc and 34% Semillon, has a more expressive bouquet than the 2013 La Mission Haut Brion Blanc, with mineral-rich citrus fruit, grapefruit and honeysuckle - all very vivacious. The palate is very well balanced, intense and exuberant with lanolin-tinged citrus fruit, dried pineapple, almond, sweet fig and a dash of lemongrass on the long finish. This is just a superb Haut Brion Blanc that should give two or three decades of pleasure. |

Wine Advocate (96)The impossible to pronounce 2013 He-li-an-thus, coming from purchased grapes, is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 18% Petit Verdot and the rest Cabernet Franc, bottled unfined and unfiltered. Aged in Darnajou oak, this is an elegant wine, but it has serious intensity, a blue/purple color, sweet black raspberry and blueberry fruit, some forest floor and spring flowers. It is my favorite of the three vintages to date, although the 2015 has the potential to match it. Drink it over the next 20 years. |

Vinous (93+)The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard is a powerful wine. Beguiling aromatics make a strong opening statement. Pine, rosemary, mint, sweet red cherry, pomegranate and a touch of new oak give the wine its bright, lifted feel. Even with considerable air, and also taking into account the personality of the year, the 2013 Martha's remains closed down and not at all expressive. My impression is that this could have been a materially better wine. |

Burgundy | 1 | 92 (VN) | HK$7,865.00
Vinous (92)(Boillot vinified this wine with 30% whole clusters, describing it as an experiment): Good bright red. Slightly peppery aromas of spicy red berries and black cherry lifted by a subtle floral topnote. Salty, tactile and concentrated, displaying lovely savory depth and inner-mouth tension. Shows the medicinal quality of classic young Clos Vougeot without any hard edges. Finishes with nicely refined tannins and noteworthy lingering flavor. |

Wine Advocate (92)Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Bouilland. The 2013 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières from Henri Boillot took time to unfold in the glass, but eventually reveals attractive lime flower, cold granite and yellow flower scents, later accompanied by acacia honey. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity. There is just the right amount of bitter lemon here that imparts tension from start to finish, leading to a composed finish with a salinity that begs another sip. Quite simply, a delicious Meursault. Tasted May 2016. |

Burgundy | 1 | 91-94 (VN) | HK$9,575.00
Vinous (91-94)More oaky and less open on the nose than the Combettes: always the least exuberant of these premier crus, notes Boillot. Dense but tightly wound, showing terrific energy to its chewy flavors of lemon oil, flowers and salty minerals. The slowly building, chewy, gripping finish suggests that this wine will blossom with time in bottle. The pH here is 3.19 and the acidity relatively high at 4.7 grams per liter, according to Boillot. |

Burgundy | 1 | 91 (VN) | HK$9,695.00
Vinous (91)(from four different ages of vines ranging from 40 to 90 years old; Boillot's Santenots comes from younger vines): Full medium red. Brooding aromas of blueberry, blackberry and menthol; lots of tiny millerandé berries here. Silky and saline on the palate; deeper than the Santenots but showing less sex appeal and early juiciness to its flavors of dark berries, spices and menthol. But this is chewier and more concentrated and a bit more important on the finish. |

Burgundy | 1 | 90-92 (VN) | HK$9,885.00
Vinous (90-92)Bright, dark red. Reticent, rather wild aromas of dark cherry and underbrush. Energetic but backward; much tighter today than the village wine and more dominated by its structure. The wild quality carries through on the palate. Best today on the back end, where fine-grained tannins spread out to saturate the palate. |

Wine Advocate (92-94)Apparently, there's no Les Celestins in 2013, which was a challenging vintage in the Southern Rhône. That said, the barrel we tasted of the 2013 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Marie Beurrier was a bit light but elegant and silky in texture, with pomegranate-like red fruit and gentle spice. |

Wine Advocate (97+)The 2013 Brut Grand Cru Aÿ Argonne is the latest in a series of superb releases from Giraud. Unwinding in the glass with notes of buttered toast, crisp yellow orchard fruit, honeycomb, warm spices and ripe stone fruits, it's full-bodied, deep and vinous, with a layered core of concentrated fruit, incisive acids and an elegant pearly mousse. Long and penetrating, it's finer-boned than its richer, more muscular 2012 predecessor; but like that more structured wine, it will reward bottle age. |

James Suckling (95)Gorgeous notes of hazelnuts, apricots, salted almonds, lemons and pistachio shells. Medium to full body with opulence, yet elegance, and a silky quality to the bubbles. Saline and gourmand finish. Nutty and light French-butter notes come through. Only 2,000 bottles. Drink or hold. |

Wine Advocate (92)Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers felt a little reduced on the nose -- though that is common with infant Gouges. At the moment it compromises the wine's definition, which is a pity as there is attractive red cherry and redcurrant fruit waiting to surface. That will be addressed with bottle age. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, some chewiness that will dissipate with time and good depth. It feels a little chunky and uncouth towards the finish although it does improve and gain more cohesion in the glass. Time should meliorate this wine, so afford it 3-4 years in bottle. Tasted September 2016. |

Vinous (92-94)Bright red. Ripe, musky aromas of red berries, minerals and rust. Suave and creamy-sweet in the mouth, with an almost jammy ripeness but also very good framing acidity to the crunchy red berry flavors. Perhaps a bit youthfully disassociated at present, not to mention firmly tannic on the back end, yet this is easier to taste today than the Vaucrains owing to its sheer sex appeal. Offers superb potential. |

Explore the finely crafted Henri Jouan Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Echezeaux 2013, emanating from the prestigious vineyards of Bourgogne, France. Halliday Wine Companion (97)A lovely Mount Edelstone release under Henschke's Museum & Rare program. From the famous 107-year-old single vineyard in the Eden valley. It's in a wonderful place with some light tertiary tones beginning to make themselves known in the form of gentle leather and tobacco notes that lie behind the elegant red and dark berry fruits. On a Zoom meeting as I tasted this wine, Stephen described the tannins as savoury and akin to a 'rollercoaster of tiny pebbles', which is a description that I love. It's a pleasure to see these museum releases, and this one is in a beautiful place. |

Wine Advocate (89-91)The 2013 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru la Perrière, a vineyard that Hubert and Laurent have treated organically for three years, has a quite an intense bouquet with small red cherries, cranberry and raspberry preserve. The palate is very well balanced with just the right amount of acidity to cut through the succulent red fruit, although the finish does not quite possess the delineation that I was expecting at the moment. |

Vinous (89-92)(the only one of these 2013s that had been racked and assembled by the time of my visit, as it had been very reduced): Good deep red. Pure but reticent aromas of red fruits and menthol. Silky on entry, then supple and energetic in the mid-palate, with pristine red fruit flavors supported by a stony underpinning. Finishes saline and persistent, with its 50% new oak showing today. Oxygen has done wonders for this wine, noted van Canneyt, adding that the rest of the 2013s need air. He planned to rack them into cuves not long after my visit and bottle in January. |

Wine Advocate (93-95)The 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Malconsorts was the latest to finish its malolactic in mid-September. The nose has plenty of energy: red berry fruit, orange sorbet, wet limestone and fresh prune scents. The palate is primal with a dense body of red fruit. There is better weight here than the Suchots with more persistence on the peacock’s tail finish. Is this the Malconsorts of the vintage? |
