(3x150cl) 2019Decanter (95)
A dark, heady, brooding nose full of violets and blackcurrants. Liquorice, black truffle and scented black cherries are all noticeable straight away, this is quite a bold wine, with at first a chewy, mouthfiling texture then settles to reveal layers of acidity, fruit and freshness as well as more detail to the tannins and overall structure. Very seductive and charming. Still so much potential with all the elements at the fore right now, persistent and driving. Will be excellent to approach in a few years.HK$7,495.00 -

The 2017 Taillefer offers lovely density in a mid-weight style that holds considerable near- and medium-term appeal. Succulent dark cherry, blood orange, chocolate, spice, new leather and mocha all flesh out in this appealing, unctuous Pomerol from Bernard Moueix. Best of all, the 2017 should be a terrific value. Tasted two times.HK$2,735.00 -

The 2019 Taillefer has evolved nicely since I tasted it from barrel. On the nose, vivacious brambly red fruit, Earl Grey, allspice and cedar aromas vie for attention. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a liberal sprinkling of white pepper and a cohesive finish. This should age well in bottle.HK$2,765.00 -

The 2020 Taillefer was tasted from two bottles. I must confess that the first left me scratching my head and did not rate it. The second is cleaner and more focused on the nose with blackberry, briary and light tertiary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine tannins and well-judged acidity. Ah…this is much more like it. Not long, but its precision really develops nicely in the glass. My score is based on the second bottle.HK$2,660.00 -

The 2021 Taillefer has a fragrant, floral bouquet of brambly red fruit infused with iris petal; touches of tobacco emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit and fine acidity, though the finish is just a bit hard at the moment. Give it 3–4 years in bottle.HK$1,745.00 -

The NV Trilogie was a fantastic wine, a blend of three vintages of declassified fruit from Le Pin. There are two or three different blends, this one comprising 2013, 2014 and 2015. Again, served blind, I stupidly guessed Saint-Émilion! I know that Jacques Thienpont and Fiona Morrison dislike the speculation that shrouds Trilogie due to its connection. Affordability was their original intention, but you cannot fight market forces and the truth is that this is a delicious, surprisingly complex multi-vintage blend. As one of the only people that ever tasted the declassified 2013 Le Pin, serving as a guinea pig for Jacques on one visit, I can vouchsafe that he made far better use of the fruit that year.HK$20,025.00 -

This wine continues to be one of the most indifferent Trotanoy's made in the last thirty years. I am at a loss to understand why the 1983 is so muted, dull, and monolithic. It possesses a medium-ruby color, and a straightforward, indifferent nose of berry fruit and spices. Shallow but pleasant, with soft, uninspiring flavors presented in a compact, straightforward style, this wine finishes briskly. Given the vintage and the greatness of this vineyard, Trotanoy remains one of 1983's most notable disappointments. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Last tasted, 4/93.HK$15,110.00 -

This is likely to be one of the most long-lived Pomerol from 2000. It has hugely rich fruit, it is has great density. But what will give it its longevity is the layer of tannin that sits, brooding, in the middle of the wine. Don't even attempt to drink before 2012.HK$17,970.00 -

The 2001 Trotanoy is a vintage that I tasted regularly in its youth, but had not encountered for five years. It has a very appealing nose of loamy earth/mulch-infused tarry black fruit, touches of mint coming through with aeration. The medium-bodied palate delivers a mixture of red and black fruit, a liberal dash of cracked black pepper, and some clove and sea salt. Showing very good complexity, this is harmonious and focused, albeit just a little rustic toward the grippy finish. It’s less broody than in its youth, but I would still afford it 3–5 more years in bottle.HK$14,415.00 -
Wine Spectator (95-100)
Beautiful aromas of milk chocolate and berries with hints of raspberry tart. Full-bodied, with wonderful length and a beautiful finish. This should be better than the 2000. And it could equal the superlative 1998. Easier than the Pétrus to taste just now, and flashier. Score range: 95-100HK$11,300.00 -

Tasted blind as a vintage comparison at the Valandraud vertical, the 2008 Trotanoy has an attractive bouquet with engaging clarity and purity: raspberry preserve, wild strawberry, a trace of something almost medicinal just below the surface. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and a crisp line of acidity, subtle notes of cedar and tar infusing the red berry fruit with a composed, structured finish with plenty of freshness and vigor. Classic in style, well crafted and sure to give another two decades of pleasure, this is a stupendous Trotanoy that is up there with the 2009 and 2010 . Yes, it's that good and in fact, it kept on improving as it opened in the glass. Tasted December 2016.HK$10,585.00 -

This has a phenomenal nose, with raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. Perfect. The concentration is phenomenal, and paired with great depth and charm, it goes on for minutes. I am shocked. I underestimated this the first time I tasted it from barrel. Barrel sample.HK$12,955.00
