  • Trotanoy 2009 (1x75cl)

    James Suckling (98-99)

This has a phenomenal nose, with raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. Perfect. The concentration is phenomenal, and paired with great depth and charm, it goes on for minutes. I am shocked. I underestimated this the first time I tasted it from barrel. Barrel sample.

  • Trotanoy 2010 (3x150cl)
    (3x150cl) 2010

    Jeb Dunnuck (99)

As expected, the 2010 Château Trotanoy is a dense, powerful, masculine Pomerol in the vintage that does everything right. Revealing a deep ruby/plum hue, as well as a smorgasbord-like array of black cherries, currants, iron, graphite, and chocolate, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, concentrated mid-palate, and sensational length. It still has plenty of tannins lurking under the fruit, yet everything is just perfectly balanced, giving this an incredible seamlessness on the palate that makes it so compelling. Absolutely riveting stuff, it has another 30 years of prime drinking ahead of it. Drink 2025-2055.

  • Trotanoy 2011 (1x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (94)

The 2011 Trotanoy has a delineated and nicely focused bouquet, maybe not the most energetic you will find, though I appreciate the pencil box and sage aromatics filtering through the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, well judged acidity, fleshy and very well balanced with impressive precision on the finish. This is an excellent Pomerol that is ageing beautifully in bottle. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.

    Wine Advocate (96)

Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux tasting. The 2012 Trotanoy is clearly blossoming in bottle. Over almost 20 years of tasting out of barrel, I cannot recall a Trotanoy that has so surpassed its showing at en primeur. It has a well-defined bouquet that initially seems straightforward. Don't be fooled...it opens in the glass and reveals subtle red berry fruit, truffle and ferrous aromas. There is stunning definition and poise here. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin. There is a core of wonderful Cabernet Franc here, the acidity extremely well judged with a precise, sustained finish. This is a sophisticated Pomerol with élan and no more, no less than a fabulous Trotanoy. Tasted January 2016.

  • Trotanoy 2014 (3x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (97)

The 2014 Trotanoy had (que surprise!) closed down on the nose compared to its JP Moueix stablemates. A few swirls of the glass and it reveals very precise, mineral-soaked black fruit laced with black truffle and subtle sous-bois aromas. It soon gathers momentum and the aromas were gaining more and more intensity after five minutes. The palate is outstanding. There is brilliant structure here, immense and almost staggering purity, incredible focus and tension with an electrifying spiciness on the finish. Best Pomerol of the vintage? The only thing wrong with that last sentence is the question mark at the end.

  • Trotanoy 2015 (3x75cl)

    The Wine Cellar Insider (100)

There are many things I love about wine tasting. One of the great pleasures is tasting wine in barrel and scoring it higher in bottle, which is a true sign of quality. That is what took place here clearly. This wine is off the charts! The level of intensity has to be tasted to be believed. The fruit tastes as if each berry was polished with a velvet cloth. This is incredibly hedonistic. With a surreal texture, the wine unfolds and coats your palate with waves of perfectly ripe fruits. cashmere tannins make you with the 60 second finish was even longer! This is an indulgence of pleasure at its best.

  • Trotanoy 2017 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (99)

A very pure nose that exudes poise and precision, in every aspect of this wine’s composition. Aromas of violets, blueberries, cedar, fresh truffle, wet earth and plums lead to a palate that offers a very full, plush and intense core of pristinely ripened red-plum fruit and mouthwatering freshness, as well as tannins that imbue the long, balanced finish with great clarity. Incredible triumph for the vintage. Try from 2023.

  • Trotanoy 2018 (3x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (100)

Another heavenly Pomerol in the vintage, the 2018 Château Trotanoy checks in as 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc brought up in (I suspect) lots of new French oak (although it's certainly not apparent). Revealing a dense purple hue as well as a smorgasbord-like bouquet of blackcurrants, dried flowers, cured meats, violets, tobacco, and chocolate, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a sexy, seductive texture, building yet sweet tannins, and just a rich, concentrated, yet flawless profile on the palate that's already impossible to resist. Nevertheless, a good 7-8 years of bottle age are warranted, and this magical elixir is going to evolve for 40 years or more.

  • Trotanoy 2019 (1x300cl)
    (1x300cl) 2019

    Jeb Dunnuck (100)

Reminding me a little of the 1998, the 2019 Château Trotanoy is all Merlot sourced from a 7-hectare vineyard planted on dark clay and gravelly soils. A prodigious wine in every way, it offers a serious, dense, powerful, full-bodied style as well as notes of ripe black cherries, damp earth, tobacco, cedar pencil, and graphite. As with the other top wines in the vintage, it has an incredible sense of purity and precision, building, firm tannins, awesome mid-palate depth, and a huge finish. It's not for those seeking instant gratification and is much more structured and backward than I would have thought from barrel. It needs a solid decade of bottle age and will have 40+ years of longevity. It's another brilliant, brilliant wine from this team that I wish every reader could taste.

  • Trotanoy 2023 (6x75cl)

    The Wine Cellar Insider (97-99)

The essence of violets, roses, black cherries, black raspberries, spice, smoke, espresso, chocolate, and licorice nuances provide the aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich, supple, creamy, vibrant. There is lift, intensity, length, and sensuality, with silky tannins. The fruits are ripe, deep, and penetrating. The berries come in layers, that build in intensity, as they linger. The seamless finish remains with you for over 50 seconds! Edouard Moueix feels 2023 provides the essence of each parcels terroir. However, he was not always sure about the vintage. In fact, it took until harvest time before he slowly became confident of the quality here. The wine is produced from 100% Merlot. 14.5% ABV, 3.85 pH. The harvest took place September 7 - September 19.

  • Vieux Chateau Certan 1974 (8x75cl)
  • Vieux Chateau Certan 1976 (4x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (75)

Quite one-dimensional, with soft, ripe plummy fruit, and some oaky aromas, the 1976 has average concentration, no noticeable tannin, and a pleasant, yet uninteresting finish. Anticipated maturity: Now--may be in decline. Last tasted, 7/83.
  • Vieux Chateau Certan 1989 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

The 1989 Vieux Château Certan has long been one of my favorite wines of that decade. The bouquet shows no signs of relinquishing that title with gorgeous black truffle, bay leaf, warm gravel and briary scents that are simply beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine line of acidity, warm earth on the entry, leather and truffle, great depth here with sublime precision on the finish, which is bridled with hints of mushroom and cloves. Maybe this is reaching its peak? Then again, it shows absolutely no signs of reaching the end of its plateau. This is nothing short of a wondrous Pomerol from Alexandre Thienpont. Tasted January 2016.

  • Vieux Chateau Certan 1990 (12x75cl)
    (12x75cl) 1990

    Wine Advocate (92)

The 1990 Vieux Château Certan is drinking exceptionally well at the moment, although it does not quite possess the charm of the 1989. There is more primary fruit here than the previous vintage: black cherries, iodine and boysenberry, mingling with clove and tarry aromas that emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is similar depth here to the 1989 and yet the finish does not quite deliver the same delineation, although that cheeky dab of kirsch is pure delight. This is a great VCC, although I did notice that over a period of an hour, it fails to keep pace with the ever-meliorating 1989. Tasted January 2016.
  • Vieux Chateau Certan 1993 (6x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (84)

Disappointing following bottling, this green-flavored, herbaceous, medium-bodied wine exhibits spice and red fruit notes, but it tastes underripe and meagerly-endowed. Anticipated maturity: now-2006.
