Wine Advocate (96)

La Conseillante made an excellent wine in 2001, another great one in 2005, and the estate hit home runs in both 2008 and, above all, in 2009. In fact, the latter vintage may well end up being the modern-day reference point for La Conseillante. Nevertheless, there’s a lot to be said for this 2000. An elegant, gentle style that is never a blockbuster, the 2000 La Conseillante has a deep ruby/plum/purple color and an unbelievably expressive nose of sweet kirsch liqueur intermixed with raspberries, incense, toast, and licorice. Full-bodied yet ethereal in the sense that it seems to combine power along with eloquence and delicacy, this is a beautifully pure wine that has just hit its plateau of full maturity, although ideally I think it would benefit strongly from another 4-5 years of bottle age and drink well for two to three decades.

Wine Advocate (90)

A superb second wine, 39% of the production made it into the 2000 La Dame de Montrose. Revealing abundant Merlot characteristics, it offers wonderful sweetness, plenty of fat, juicy, chocolatey, black cherry and currant flavors, and a hedonistic personality. It will drink well for 8-10 years. Don't miss it!

Fabulous aromas of crushed berries, black olives, flint and grilled meat. Yet it's subtle. Full-bodied, with superbly refined tannins and a finish that lasts for minutes. Superb. Racy. Exciting. Best after 2012.

Off the charts in every way (if I had to pick a desert island wine, this would be in the top handful), the 2000 Château La Mission Haut-Brion is deep, rich, layered, multi-dimensional, and full-bodied, with a sensational perfume of currants, tobacco, roasted herbs, graphite, and some iron nuances. Powerful and concentrated on the palate, it's nevertheless weightless, with silky, pure, graceful tannins and not a hard edge to be found. Just absolutely sensational, and if this doesn't do it for you, nothing will. Count yourself lucky if you have bottles in the cellar, as it's going to continue drinking amazingly well for another 30, 40, 50+ years. Drink 2026-2076.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (87-89)

Red-ruby. Sappy, fruit-driven aromas of cherry and raspberry. Sweet, supple and rather easygoing; suggests gentle extraction. Offers good intensity and should give early pleasure. Finishes with smooth tannins and very good length.

A brilliant, heavenly wine that simply couldn't be any better, the 2000 Château Lafite-Rothschild is based on 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot. Ripe currants, lead pencil, cedary spice, leather, and tons of tobacco and truffle all emerge on the nose, and on the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a broad, layered, deep yet at the same time weightless and seamless mouthfeel. It still has tannins and structure but is so complex and nuanced, with that classic Lafite elegance. It has another 30-40 years of prime drinking and will most likely see its 100th birthday still offering pleasure. Drink 2026-2066.

Red and black fruits, huge truffle, graphite, spring flowers, and remarkable complexity all emerge from the 2000 Château Lafleur, a 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc blend that is the very essence of this legendary Pomerol estate. Full-bodied on the palate, it's pure and seamless, with fine, polished tannins, incredible depth, and a finish that simply won't quit. If this doesn't make your eyes roll back in your head, nothing will. It's drinking utterly spectacularly today and has another two decades of longevity at this level, with a gradual decline thereafter. Drink 2026-2046.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91)

Saturated dark red. Superripe aromas of roasted black raspberry, smoke and game, with a hint of exotic spices. Silky, fat and sweet, with terrific volume. Chewy, concentrated flavors of raspberry, tar, iron and mocha, with just enough acidity to maintain its shape. The rich, sweet tannins reach the front teeth. The crop level was a rather low 32 hectoliters per hectare following a saignee, according to owner Jonathan Maltus, who also makes Teyssier and Le Dome.

The 2000 Lagrange is deep in color and sports a bouquet very similar to the bottle poured at the vertical, resplendent with blackberry, pencil box and a discreet ash scent. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, and maybe less brutish than the previous bottle, displaying more cohesion and less austerity on the finish. This is delightful and the best example that I have encountered.

Larose-Trintaudon 2000 epitomises the quintessence of Bordeaux craftsmanship. Hailing from the esteemed Haut-Médoc appellation, this vintage is the culmination of generations of expertise by the Larose-Trintaudon family, renowned for their meticulous vineyard management and sustainable practices. Crafted from a harmonious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, the grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to ensure unparalleled quality. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, preserving the wine’s vibrant fruit character before transitioning to French oak barrels for an elegant ageing period of 18 months. The result is a wine of remarkable depth and complexity, boasting notes of blackcurrant, cassis, and subtle hints of cedar and tobacco, complemented by a velvety tannic structure and a lingering finish. Larose-Trintaudon 2000 is a testament to refined elegance and enduring sophistication, making it a distinguished addition to any connoisseur’s collection.

A classic, beautifully textured wine, the 2000 Château Lascombes offers darker berries, leather, minty herbs, and graphite on the nose. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied and concentrated, with still-present tannins, a focused, well-balanced mouthfeel, and impressive length. It's right in the middle of its prime drinking plateau and should hold for another decade before a gradual decline sets in. Drink 2026-2036.

Another example that Nature has some regard for the creations of man, with the 2000 vintage offering a grand final bow for the Millennium. To describe the weather as other than perfect would be near folly, as the harvest went off without a hitch. The Merlot came off midway through September and a touch of rain in October allowed the Cabernet to hang on a bit longer before being harvested at perfect phenolic ripeness. The Left Bank has the edge but in truth there is little between the Medoc and Libournais in such a good year!
