From the famous family of Comte de Neipperg, the 2005 D’Aiguilhe is sensational and may be one of the best cuvées I have ever tasted from Neipperg and his Côtes de Castillon estate. This wine has an opaque purple color and loads of Christmas fruitcake, licorice and crushed chalk along with plenty of blackcurrant and blackberry fruit. Full-bodied, rich, still structured and tannic, but super-concentrated, this is an amazing effort in 2005. Pale yellow-gold color. Peach and apricot aromas carry through onto the dense palate, where they are joined by suave oak and a finishing element of candied citrus peel. Full ruby-red. Aromas of blackberry coulis, violet and bitter chocolate, complicated by smoky, toasty oak. Sweet, lush and ripe, with good depth to the black cherry and smoky oak flavors. Broad and mouthfilling. Finishes with dusty, sweet tannins that reach the front teeth. A very strong effort for this property. The 2005 du Tertre is a bold, savory wine, as it so often is. Game, scorched earth, licorice, tobacco and dried herbs give this dark, virile Margaux much of its distinctive personality. The 2005 has aged well. I would prefer to drink it over the next handful of years, before the fruit fully fades, even though there is enough density to allow for aging beyond that. The 2005 Haut-Bailly is unbelievably finessed from start to finish. A wine of unreal class, the 2005 impresses with its silky, mid-weight personality and fantastic balance. The aromatics aren’t fully expressive today, but everything else about the 2005 is absolutely irresistible. Despite its considerable charm, Haut-Bailly comes across as still needing time in bottle to be at its best!
