Deep medium ruby. Blackberry, violet and a hint of dark chocolate on the nose. Impressively dense and primary, with flavors of blackberry and smoked meat complicated by a suggestion of bonfire. Chewy, dry and classic wine, finishing with substantial building tannins.HK$6,035.00 -

The stand out First Growth in my recent retasting of the 2005s, and again here it blew us all away. This was a drought year, with almost no rain from May to October, but never excessively hot, and the balance is evident. The slightly dry tannins that affected many 2005s when young were never such a problem on the warm soils at Haut-Brion, and this is generous, exceptionally nuanced and flavourful, with vivid black cherry and cassis fruits, riven through with liqourice, cocoa bean, pomegranate, sage, cocoa bean and luscious acidities. Jean-Phillip Delmas winemaker, two years into his tenure at the time after taking over from his father Jean-Bernard Delmas in 2003. 100% new oak.HK$71,850.00 -

This has the powerful damson-plum intensity of great cabernet sauvignon grown in the northern Médoc. The tannins are black but not aggressive, their stoniness cushioned by layers of fruit. There's also an umami character, something like woodland mushroom and the savory skin of tiny wild cherries. An elegant wine performing at the top of its terroir, this will be delicious around eight to 12 years from the vintage.HK$6,345.00 -

Deep ruby-red. Aromatic, vibrant aromas of red cherry, currant and dark chocolate. Wonderfully dense and palate-coating; this combines the thickness of the 2003 Joanin-Becot and the verve of the 2004. Sharply delineated flavors of blackberry, redcurrant and chocolate, lifted by mineral and minty nuances. Finishes broad and sweet, with lovely persistence. The crop level here was just 24 hectoliters per hectare, partly due to a green harvest in early July.HK$2,690.00 -

92-94 Barrel sample. There is excellent balance here: the fruit is dark and opulent, but also fresh from acidity, piled with firm but generous tannins. A wine with excellent potential.HK$6,045.00 -

A Bordeaux that seems to have a Burgundian personality, L’Arrosée’s 2005 displays elegance and finesse, with sweet black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, hints of minerality and earth, but soft tannin, a lush, medium-bodied style, and impressive concentration, purity and overall texture. By no means a blockbuster (in a vintage that produced almost endless numbers of them), this wine can be drunk now or cellared for another 15-20 years.HK$7,070.00 -

Dark in color, almost purple black, with pure tapenade and hints of ripe plum and berry. Full-bodied, with layer upon layer of velvety tannins and chocolate, berry, vanilla and tea flavors. Lasts for minutes. I am blown away by this wine. This has been amazing since the moment I tasted it from barrel. Reminds me of the superb 1950. Best after 2015. 3,500 cases made. -JSHK$23,060.00 -

Tasted blind at the 10-Year On Tasting in Sauternes. The 2005 L’Extravagant de Doisy Daëne has 3.9grams of acidity, 192 grams per liter of residual sugar and 12.3% alcohol. The 2005 has a powerful bouquet with honey, mandarin, a touch of petrol and yellow flowers on the nose, later developing that seductive marzipan scent that draws you in like a tractor beam. The palate is unctuous in the mouth that is probably going to be sugar-coated for the next year or two, but there are some gorgeous peach and citrus notes that flourish on the finish. It is more a force of nature than a wine!HK$1,130.00 -
(12x75cl) 2005La Bienfaisance 2005 exemplifies the pinnacle of Bordeaux excellence. Crafted by Château La Bienfaisance, situated in the prestigious Saint-Émilion appellation, this vintage is a harmonious blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes meticulously handpicked from biodynamically managed vineyards. The estate’s unique terroir, characterised by gravelly clay soils and optimal sun exposure, imparts exceptional depth and complexity to the wine. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, preserving the vibrant fruit flavours before transitioning to 20 months of ageing in French oak barrels, which infuses subtle vanilla and spice nuances. Under the expert guidance of maître de chai Pierre Leblanc, La Bienfaisance 2005 has received accolades from esteemed wine publications for its elegance and structure. This distinguished vintage offers a rich bouquet of dark berries, refined tannins, and a long, silky finish, making it a coveted selection for discerning connoisseurs seeking timeless sophistication in every bottle.

Good deep red-ruby. Kirsch, minerals and mocha on the nose. Smooth and fine-grained; ripe but quite dry, with lovely clarity and intensity of flavor. Finishes with firm tannic spine and good length. Like the young 2007, this offers good structure for its year, but much more richness.HK$10,545.00 -

The 2005 La Conseillante is a rich, heady Pomerol. Crème de cassis, lavender, chocolate, leather, espresso, licorice and sweet French oak infuse the 2005 with tremendous character. The 2005 is, naturally, a wine of its era. There is quite a bit of extraction and tannin, and yet the wine has aged impeccably. Time in the glass brings out energy and aromatic lift to round things out nicely. The 2005 just got better and better with time, so I suggest giving it a good bit of air. I would prefer to drink it over the next decade or so.HK$3,325.00 -

Bright ruby-red. Meaty dark berries and leather on the nose. Dense, sweet and highly concentrated, with very ripe flavors of plum, cassis, licorice and spices. Finishes with dusty but sweet tannins, a cool suggestion of menthol that gives it life, and sneaky length.HK$14,490.00 -

A sleeping giant. Dark ruby in color, showing aromas of blackberry, cèpe and green olive, with a hint of mineral. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a supercaressing mouthfeel. Turns to coffee, dark chocolate and berry. Chewy yet balanced. Very, very long in the mouth. The finish is absolutely breathtaking. Best after 2013. -JSHK$20,440.00 -

The finest La Gaffeliere I have ever tasted, the prodigious 2005 boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a flamboyant bouquet of lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, blackberries, smoked meats, incense, and Asian spice. Fabulously deep and full-bodied as well as ethereal and exceptionally elegant for its explosive richness and intensity, its lightness of being reflects the vineyard’s sensational terroir. This succulent beauty appears to be approachable, but that belies some significant tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2030+.HK$6,980.00 -

As usual, La Gomerie’s 2005 is a sexy, dense plum/purple-tinged effort. From a 7-acre, 32-year old site planted with 100% Merlot, it exhibits a sumptuous bouquet of white chocolate, roasted coffee, blackberries, black cherries, graphite, and toasty oak. This is a modern-styled, decadently rich St.-Emilion, but because of the vintage’s higher acidity and more tannic structure, this offering possesses a more classic framework than usual. A sensational wine, it should be drinkable in 3-4 years, and age beautifully for 15-20.HK$10,900.00 -

This is very tight and closed still but shows a beautiful line of tannins and freshness. It’s full-bodied,with structure and length. Light tea. Powerful and long. Needs a year or two to open and soften.HK$8,265.00 -

The 2005 La Mission Haut-Brion is pure perfection. It has an absolutely extraordinary nose of sweet blackberries, cassis and spring flowers with some underlying minerality, a full-bodied mouthfeel, gorgeously velvety tannins (which is unusual in this vintage) and a long, textured, multi-layered finish that must last 50+ seconds. This is a fabulous wine and a great effort from this hallowed terroir. Drink this modern-day legend over the next 30+ years. Only 5,500 cases were produced of this blend of 69% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc.HK$52,640.00 -
