All Bordeaux White Wines
France is revered for its exceptional white wines, which showcase the country's rich winemaking heritage, diverse terroirs, and unwavering commitment to quality. Today, let us embark on a journey through the best white wines that France has to offer, exploring renowned vineyards and the regions that give birth to these extraordinary expressions.
In Burgundy, the appellations of Chablis, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet stand tall as the epitome of excellence in white wine production. Wineries such as Domaine Raveneau, Domaine Dauvissat, and Domaine Leflaive craft mesmerizing Chardonnays that capture the essence of the region's unique Kimmeridgian limestone soils. These wines exhibit precision, purity, and a remarkable balance of mineral notes, citrus flavors, and vibrant acidity.
Moving to the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are celebrated for their exceptional Sauvignon Blancs. Domaine Vacheron, Domaine Didier Dagueneau, and Domaine Pascal Jolivet create expressive and terroir-driven wines that showcase the region's distinct flinty minerality, zesty citrus, and herbaceous undertones.
Further northeast in France, in the region of Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, Domaine Trimbach, and Domaine Weinbach produce stunning white wines from varietals like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris. These wines display remarkable depth, aromatic complexity, and a balance between sweetness and acidity, reflecting the region's unique microclimates and granite-rich soils.
In Bordeaux, the region of Graves is renowned for its white wines, particularly those crafted from the classic grape varieties of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Château Haut-Brion, Château Pape Clément, and Domaine de Chevalier are esteemed vineyards that produce rich and age-worthy white Bordeaux wines. These wines exhibit a beautiful interplay of tropical fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a touch of toasty oak.
Finally, in the Rhône Valley, the appellation of Condrieu shines as a beacon of excellence in Viognier production. Renowned vineyards such as Domaine Georges Vernay and Domaine Yves Cuilleron create remarkable Viognier wines that seduce the senses with their exotic aromas of apricot, peach, and delicate floral notes. These wines showcase richness, elegance, and a silky texture that lingers on the palate.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)Yellow-gold color. Aromas of mirabelle, creme brulee, honey and spices, along with a faint fusel nuance. Dense, unctuous, powerful and complex; superripe and concentrated but with excellent acidity contributing structure and shape. Very long and sweetly oaky on the back end. This struck me as like a more powerful, gripping version of the '98. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (95)The 2018 Lafaurie-Peyraguey is one of the classiest wines of the vintage. Effusive floral overtones give the 2018 its lifted, gracious personality. Lemon confit, yellow flowers, mint, pineapple and passionfruit are all laced together in a mid-weight, beautifully persistent Sauternes that hits all the right notes. The 2018 is just sublime. That's all there is to it. |

Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (98)Enjoyable, plenty of pep and character, with satiny, precisely spliced texture to the apricot, nectarine and pineapple fruits. As it opens in the glass, waves of white truffle and ginger, with a zing of mandarin zest, become clear. An impressive Sauternes with decades ahead of it. |

James Suckling (99-100)Incredible, young Sauternes with so much spicy, dried-mushroom, dust and powdered-earth character on the nose and palate, Full-bodied with a medium-sweet palate and a finish that is endless. Apricots, dried lemons and peaches. Caramel. Great balance. Greatest modern vintage? 6,000 bottles made. |

Relish in the refined elegance of the Lamothe Bouscaut Blanc 2020, an exquisite Pessac-Léognan hailing from the historic vineyards of Bordeaux. This wine, a concoction of Savignon Blanc and Sémillon grapes, is a testament to the dedicated craftsmanship of Château Bouscaut. The estate, boasting a thousand years of viticultural heritage in its gravelly soil, reflects its legacy in the complexity of this wine. The Lamothe Bouscaut Blanc 2020 enjoys an intricate vinification process, with grapes independently harvested at dawn to preserve their freshness. Jeb Dunnuck (94)The 2018 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion Blanc checks in as 75% Sauvignon and 25% Sémillon that was brought up in 25% new French oak. It has a classic (and terrific) nose of honeyed grapefruit, exotic flowers, and a liquid rock-like minerality. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Bordeaux Blanc with a rounded, expansive texture, nicely integrated acidity, terrific overall balance, and a great, dry, crisp finish. It's already drinking nicely, and while I wouldn't push the aging curve, I wouldn't bet against it drinking brilliant for 15 years either. This wasn't a great vintage for the whites, but this is impressive. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (94)The 2020 Latour-Martillac Blanc has shut down since tasting from barrel, yet it opens with yellow plum, jasmine and light frangipane scents. I admire the precision here. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, quite taut and well defined. Real precision on the finish that drags you back for one more sip. This is a classy dry white Bordeaux that will give immense pleasure over a number of years. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)The 2021 Latour-Martillac Blanc has a knockout nose with apple blossom, nettle, wet pavement and citrus peel aromas. Real energy here. The palate is well balanced with fine concentration, taut and fresh with plenty of extract, touches of spice emerge towards the finish. Excellent. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (91)The 2020 Château d'Aiguilhe Blanc has an understated bouquet that has closed up since I tasted it from barrel. Light aromas of honeysuckle and jasmine surface with aeration but refuse to click into fifth gear. The palate is well balanced with a lively, Sancerre-like entry with Anjou pear and gooseberry. Sharp acidity, but not shrill, this has fine tension with a very clever and subtle reduction on the finish. Very fine. |

Jeb Dunnuck (92-94)The 2021 Chateau D'Aiguilhe Blanc is a terrific white and if you're looking for a terrific Bordeaux Blanc that won't break the bank, give this a whirl. Crushed stone, honeyed lime, and salted citrus are just some of the aromas and flavors, and it's medium-bodied, with racy, vibrant acidity, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish. |
