Vinous (90-92)(vinified with 60% whole clusters): Bright, dark red. Restrained aromas of black cherry and licorice show a slightly medicinal aspect. Fatter than the premier crus but less showy today, conveying an impression of medicinal reserve and little easy early sweetness. This rather backward wine finishes with plush, palate-saturating tannins and a strong repeating licorice quality, but some emerging dryness limited my enthusiasm. |

Burghound (93)Airy, cool and high-toned aromas include those of violet, lilac, rose petal, herbal tea and various wild red berry scents. There is fine volume, richness and energy to the equally broad-shouldered and mineral-driven flavors that also conclude in a moderately austere, compact and impressively long finale where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. Patience is once again advised as this is pretty tightly wound at present. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-95)Bright red-ruby. Cool, complex aromas of raspberry and minerals, with intriguing mushroom and underbrush nuances. Seamless, dense, thick and full, but with terrific clarity and class. Pure, tangy and aromatic in the mouth, with lovely verve and lightness of touch. Finishes with noble, very fine tannins and palate-staining persistence. A great showing. |

Vinous (95)Good medium red. Headspinning, expressive nose combines candied red fruits, chocolate, minerals, pepper, smoked meat, five-spice powder, underbrush and flowers; this incorporates all the Chambertin food groups. Hugely thick, sappy and sweet, with outstanding volume and breadth. Wonderfully dense flavors of raspberry, menthol, five-spice powder and underbrush. Finishes with broad, noble tannins and unflagging persistence. This captures the essence of the 2003 vintage, and is showing spectacularly today. A no-brainer for those lucky enough to find a bottle: I thought I was drinking an old-style Burgundy from the '40s. |

Burgundy | 1 | 98 (VN) | HK$26,715.00
Vinous (98)Dark medium red. Ineffable nose combines tight, wild red berries, musky animal nuances and a hint of torrefaction, enlivened by hint notes of wild mint and white pepper. Densely packed and chewy; a distinctly masculine wine with outstanding intensity and underlying structure. And yet the texture is silky too. This utterly palate-saturating wine finishes with explosive rising notes of red berries, game, licorice, pepper, mint and saline minerality and great perfumed persistence. The crop level from these old vines and small berries was between 30 and 35 hectoliters per hectare, as Bernstein routinely does multiple green harvests here to ensure that the clusters finish at roughly the same level of potential alcohol. Incidentally, Bernstein attempted to ensure freshness in his 2015s by using 80% whole clusters to balance the ripeness of the fruit. |

Vinous (95)The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru is a dense, powerful wine that is going to need the better part of a decade to soften. Tannic and brooding, the 2018 is in no mood to show all its cards today. There is good depth and tons of intensity, but the tannins are overpowering at this stage. |

Jancis Robinson (18.5)Very dark crimson. Heady and intense. Very rich and magnificent. Truly a noble, ambitious wine even if not the subtlest. With lift and majesty. Some sweetness but not excessively so. Just still a little dry/bitter on the finish but the Bernstein style is evident, uncompromising and ambitious. |

Burgundy | 1 | 94-97 (VN) | HK$16,080.00
Vinous (94-97)Dark red-ruby. Knockout nose combines raspberry, cherry, game and saline underbrush, plus a whiff of torrefaction. At once fully ripe and delicate; in a distinctly more feminine style than the Mazis. The plush, rich yet elegant flavors of medicinal dark fruits, spices and exotic flowers are complicated by salty minerality. Less sweet in the early going than the Mazis, finishing precise, classic and extremely long, with serious but fully buffered tannins that melt into the palate. |

Burgundy | 1 | 91-93 (VN) | HK$11,945.00
Vinous (91-93)Bright, dark red. Red raspberry and exotic spice aromas are accented by a peppery stem element. Juicier and tighter than the Chambolle Les Lavrottes, showing a more restrained sweetness owing to its pungent spice and herb qualities. But this very long, vibrant wine finishes with a touch of underbrush and superb rising perfume. Incidentally, Bernstein owns these vines, as well as those from which he makes his Mazis-Chambertin. |

Burgundy | 1 | 96 (VN) | HK$17,285.00
Vinous (96)The 2015 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a gorgeous, seductive, complex bouquet of intermingled layers of red and black fruit and touches of sous-bois, sage and rose petals. The palate is finely tuned and a little oaky at the moment, though the oak will be soaked up with time. This is well balanced, displaying a fine bead of acidity, impressive precision and a very persistent finish that is pure joy. An outstanding Mazis from Bernstein. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. |

Jancis Robinson (18)Partly his own vines now. 100% new oak. Barrel sample – already racked from barrel to barrel. Delicate aroma at once dark-fruited and rocky, crushed rocks. Darkly, elegantly fragrant. Dry, the tannins paper-fine. All in elegance even though the fruit is fully, darkly ripe. Again there is a hint of oak sweetness but very much in the background. Builds to a chewy but generously fruited finish. Excellent harmony in a baby wine. Lots of freshness within the powerful framework. (JH) |

Vinous (92-94)The 2017 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is much more reserved on the nose compared to the Charmes-Chambertin, the fruit a little darker. There is something of a crushed-pebble, almost beach-like scent, a distant tang of cockle sheds that surfaces with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and a little more depth and grip than the Charmes-Chambertin, even if it does not quite display the same sensuality and flesh on the finish. Good potential. |
