Vinous (92-94)A very different side of Nuits St. Georges emerges from the 2013 Aux Murgers. Here it is the wine's broad, ample texture that stands out. Silky tannins wrap around the creamy finish in an expansive, generous Burgundy that is likely to provide readers will a long drinking window of pure pleasure.

Vinous (91-93)Cathiard's 2013 Nuits St. Georges Aux Thorey is packed with implosive energy. Dark blue and black stone fruits, smoke, spice and new leather come through, but the 2013 remains tightly wound, with imposing tannins and notable concentration. I expect the 2013 is going to need a good decade to start strutting its stuff. Still, there is plenty to look forward to.

Vinous (94+)The 2013 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru has a typically powerful bouquet with macerated small dark cherries, a hint of dark chocolate and loamy aromas that envelop the senses, developing more floral top notes with aeration. The palate is supple and silky smooth, very sensual with black cherries, boysenberry and spice with just a slight bitterness on the persistent finish. It is probably a decade too young to drink this, so keep any bottles in the cellar for several years. Tasted at 21 Boulevard restaurant in Beaune.

Vinous (93)The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a wine that I have not tasted since in barrel. It has blossomed on the nose with charming redcurrant, Morello and tertiary scents, a subtle damp moss and undergrowth aroma gradually becoming more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, a palpable sense of energy and impressive precision towards the finish that leaves the mouth tingling with glee afterwards. Impressive and this comes highly recommended. Tasted at Flint Wines’ Taupenot-Merme retrospective.

Vinous (92)Healthy dark red. Pungent aromas of dried flowers and iodine are complicated by a resiny note. Dense, sweet and deep, conveying an impression of power to its savory flavors of dried flowers and potpourri. Finishes with noteworthy aromatic persistence. This wine will rely as much on its acidity as on its tannins for longevity.

Vinous (93+)Deep, bright red. Captivating aromas of strawberry, raspberry, cherry liqueur, soy sauce and porcini. At once dense and juicy, conveying outstanding energy and firm underlying minerality to its flavors of red fruits, spices, dried flowers and earth. Still tightly wound but not hard, this strong effort finishes with firm but sweet tannins and terrific rising length.

Burghound (92)This is quite densely fruited with an unusually expressive mélange of violet, plum, red and black currant, tea and plenty of earth elements. There is very fine volume and plenty of power to the reasonably well-detailed and muscular flavors that delivers outstanding length on the youthfully austere and saline suffused finish. While I envision that markedly more depth will develop there is enough underlying material present that if it does then my predicted score may very well be too conservative as this is very good.

Wine Advocate (93)The 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru, which comes from the limit with the forest that produces a low yields (in one year they cut the trees and the yields increased by 20%). Matured in five new barrels, it has a perfumed bouquet with red currant, cranberry and sous-bois notes with a touch of oyster shell. The palate is very well balanced with crisp red berry fruit, fine mineralité with a sense of energy and poise on the finish. There is a fine sustain here, a great contribution to the vintage and the domaine's top wine in 2013.

Wine Advocate (90)Matured in 80% new oak, the 2013 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru was bottled in December. It has a straightforward bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, perhaps a little rustic and missing a little complexity. It has plenty of sappy black fruit, good structure, but needs a little more flesh and persistence on the bay-leaf infused finish. Cellar this for a couple of years and see what comes out the other side.

Wine Advocate (91)Tasted blind at Fine & Rare Wines' Clos Vougeot tasting, the 2013 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from Domaine Tortochot has a slightly savory bouquet with redcurrant and cranberry, quite complex and opening nicely with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a keen line of acidity and a pleasing bitterness with a sustained, quite tensile finish. Give this two or three more years in bottle and you will have a very interesting Clos Vougeot. This is much better than the bottle I encountered at the domaine last year.

Vinous (88)Reticent aromas of menthol and mint. Fat and sweet in the mouth; more open-knit today than the 2014 but still showing good flavor definition and a touch of menthol austerity. Finishes with a bracing white grapefruit quality and lovely restrained sweetness. Transcends its appellation and reveals virtually no evidence of compromised grape skins.

Wine Advocate (93+)Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Charmes-Chambertin les Mazoyères Grand Cru has a lighter bouquet than its peers, a little simplistic for a grand cru although it does improve in the glass, becoming savory with hints of dried blood. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, good weight if missing sophistication and breeding, showing a slight bitterness towards the dry finish and yet you cannot help but feel this is going to turn into a lovely Charmes-Chambertin. Maybe this is enduring a dumb phase ... you will just have to wait it out. Tasted September 2016.
