The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Combe d'Orveaux was just a little reduced on the nose when we met at the domaine. Like the Noirots, this is holding something back. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit; there is mouth-sapping salinity here and it is delineated with good tension, gently building towards a lightly grippy finish. Once the aromatics awaken, this will be a lovely Chambolle Musigny, even if it is a bit of a broody bugger out of barrel.HK$8,200.00 -

The 2014 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées had a more floral bouquet in the making, nicely defined, just a touch of reduction to get through at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black cherry and raspberry fruit on the entry, nicely judged acidity, but just needing a little more precision to come through on the finish. If that transpires, then it will certainly deserve a higher score, but I will be prudent for now.HK$7,915.00 -

Medium red. Musky red and darker berry aromas are complemented by a mineral element. Creamy and dense, offering lovely texture for the year but in a classically dry, laid-back style, with its blackberry fruit accented by violet and pepper. This firmly structured wine needs to be served with food or held for a few years.HK$7,110.00 -

Medium red. Musky aromas of black raspberry and crushed rock. Concentrated, creamy and fresh, offering serious intensity to its dense raspberry and mineral flavors. Bright acidity contributes to the impression of inner-mouth tension and cut. The tannins are present but quite fine on the long, firm finish, which offers terrific floral lift. This superb wine reminded me of a 1999 in style.HK$23,345.00 -

The 2014 Echézeaux Grand Cru du Dessus, which was completely destemmed, has a lovely bouquet, very harmonious and perhaps showing more complexity than the Chapelle-Chambertin at the moment. The mineralité really comes through here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, vibrant and vivacious with perfectly judged acidity. This is a really quite beautiful Echézeaux for long term aging (if you can resist temptation).HK$15,910.00 -

Good dark red. Classic Morey aromas of black raspberry, spices, mocha and bitter chocolate. Dense, supple and slightly saline, conveying lovely vinosity and perfume to its black raspberry and spice flavors. Nicely pure village wine with supple tannins and good length. I like the balance of salinity and fruit.HK$7,285.00 -

Bright red-ruby. Very pure, perfumed aromas and flavors of blackberry, boysenberry, minerals, violet and cocoa powder. Sappy and tightly wound, conveying a powerful impression of vinosity thanks to its pungent minerality. The pH here of 3. 45 is the lowest in the cellar in 2014. Indeed, this wine shows a distinctly cool quality in the context of the vintage, and finishes with excellent chewy length. Tremblay told me that the 2008 version of this wine was paired by a chef with a tuna dish during a trip to Tokyo and that the combination was perfect.HK$41,930.00 -

Once again there is a sufficient amount of reduction to warrant a thorough aeration. By contrast there is a lovely vibrancy and freshness in the mouth with plenty of sauvage character present on the velvety and caressing big-bodied and muscular flavors that coat the mouth thanks to the abundance of dry extract that also serves to buffer the very firm tannins on the moderately austere, serious and hugely long finish. As good as this is though it's not clear at this very early juncture whether it will ultimately surpass the Bressandes. Still, both possess outstanding development potential and are of first-rate quality.HK$15,460.00 -

A moderate application of wood frames the overtly floral and attractive fresh aromas of ripe dark cherry, cassis and soft earth hints. The sleek and delineated flavors possess a supple mid-palate though the youthfully austere finish tightens up quickly while evidencing a subtle trace of warmth. (35% new oak): Bright pale yellow. Inviting perfume of yellow peach, ripe lemon, hazelnut and spicy oak. Plump, sweet, tactile and concentrated; richer and smoother than the Perrières but without that wine's energy. (bottled in April of this year, a month or two later than the other 2014 white wines at this address): The nose offers perfumed scents of lavender and white pepper complemented by sweet oak. The 2014 vintage in Burgundy has been rung in with a great deal of local optimism and excitement. After three successive vintages of incredibly low yield and quantities, the growers of the Cote de Nuits were ready to welcome an easy vintage and the chance to make a bit more wine. Easy seemed to be the word on everyone's lips as the growing season presented few climatic challenges and viticultural decisions were by and large straightforward.
Tasting the wines from barrel, we quickly learned that the reds were easy to taste, forward and classical, while the whites were truly remarkable. More than one winemaker came forward to declare that 2014 saw the best white wines in a lifetime. Good levels of acidity kept the bundles of ripe fruit lovely, while the overall character of the vintage was in such good balance that the wines will be approachable from a relatively young age, while the best will age very well indeed.
In general the Cote de Nuits fared a bit better than the Cote de Beaune by virtue of having escaped the savage hail which effected the latter. As much as the hail devastated yields, it fortunately did not impact on quality and many producers managed to make some truly exceptional wines with great forward fruit and firm structure.
Overall this is a vintage with a lot to offer and for Burgundy lovers, it is one to celebrate. Each appellaton was true to style and the winemakers had room to impart their own subtle influence on the finish product. Freshness, flavour and verve are the keyword this year and they come together in bundles.
