Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)The analysis looks perfectly balanced at 13.35% alcohol and pH 3.15. This has been racked but not sulphured since the harvest. Primrose colour, the nose shows a little heaviness and needs freshening up soon with a sulphur adjustment. The nose suggests yellow fruit and a certain thickness of texture. Ripe to baked apple notes. The palate however shows wonderful potential with excellent grip due in part to a little youthful bitterness. Still the apple theme but more important to consider the intensity and the structure. Also the length is what it should be. I have to be cautious given the current stage of development. Tasted: December 2021 |

A Grand Cru receiving 5 star status is a truly special occasion and there is no doubt that this is a “majestic Corton-Charlemagne in the making”. A truly stunning Chardonnay, it is the highest scoring wine from Corton in 2020, even topping greats like Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey and Henri Boillot. The well-defined, tightly-packed bouquet has “considerable concentration” but will need many years before it shows its full glory. There is a “really impressive wealth of fruit here” and although it is dominating the main characteristics of the terroir currently, this will settle and there is “so much still to come” shown by the “really very long” finish. |

Vinous (96)Two vintages of Coche Dury’s Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru follow. Neither 2011 nor 2003 is especially highly regarded, but it is precisely vintages like these that can be so instructive because they tell us so much about what talented growers can achieve in challenging years. The 2011 Charlemagne needs several hours of air to open, which is not surprising, as it has always been a stubborn wine. I remember that Jean-François Coche hesitated to show the Charlemagne when I stopped by to taste the bottled 2011s, as he felt the long malos had resulted in a wine that needs more time in bottle to fully come together. Now, at nearly age ten, the 2011 remains quite vibrant and nervy, with striking citrus, floral and mineral notes laced into a racy frame. All it needs is a bit more flesh, but it’s the sort of flesh that develops with more time in bottle. |

The endless crushed-rock finish conveys a powerful sense of solidity and the structure of a red wine. Raphael Coche likes this best among his 2015s for its balance but will probably hold it back for a much later release. Burghound (94)There is a hint of exoticism to the cool and admirably pure citrus, pear and green apple suffused nose that is presently trimmed in a noticeable, if very slight, touch of reduction. The rich and extremely fresh middle weight plus flavors possess an impressive amount of dry extract as well as ample mineral influence on the austere and ultra-pure finish that seems to go on and on. This powerful and impeccably well-balanced effort is still very much on the way up and will need another 5 to 7 years before it reaches its full apogee. Tasted twice recently with consistent notes. |
