Initially on opening the 2019 Barolo Monvigliero is the most obvious and most compelling of the Monvigliero vintages in this flight, with all the components coming together in concert. Notes of bright cherries, sweet baking spice, spiced orange, and dusty earth lift from the glass. On the palate, it shows focus and purity, with good intensity, while retaining its more northern and lifted feel. This cellar-worthy vintage will hold up over the next 15-20 years.HK$4,210.00 -

On pouring, the 2020 Barolo Monvigliero appears paler in the glass compared to the others tasted in this vertical of Monvigliero, but it opens to become spicy, bright, and complete, with notes of strawberries, spice, fresh flowers, cinnamon, and dusty earth. A great wine with the most distinct sense of place, it offers a tightrope of fine tannins, a snappy spine of acidity, and a long finish, with a fresh, balanced, and age-worthy feel as well as savory, mouthwatering tension and mineral undercurrents. Drink it over the next 20 years.HK$1,785.00 -

Showing an immediately ripe and saturated quality of fruit, the 2015 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno is a child of the warm 2015 vintage. The bouquet leaves you no doubt. This wine offers a rich and exuberant approach with dark fruit nuances that cede slowly to spice, tar and black licorice. This Barolo shows depth and dark fruit, both in abundance. The quality of the tannins is still a bit rigid and less integrated at this young stage in the wine's life. You'll need to wait longer to truly enjoy these results.HK$2,850.00 -

The 2016 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno bristles with energy, as all these wines do. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2016 needs time to shed some of its youthful austerity. Sweet tobacco, spice, cedar, earthiness and dried cherry are some of the many notes that open up with some coaxing. Time in the glass bring out a whole range of tar and incense nuances that work so well with the wine’s personality.Over the years, I have been fortunate to taste the Alessandria Barolos with quite a bit of bottle age. I don’t want to scare readers off, but the 2016 is likely to be at its best in another decade or so, once the muscular tannins start to soften a bit. My impression is that the wait will be worth it.HK$730.00 -

Rich, bold and effusive, the 2017 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno shows the darker side of Nebbiolo from Verduno, as it always does. Black cherry, gravel, licorice, game, spice and cured meats are some of the many aromas and flavors that develop in the glass. Broad and ample, with tons of punch, the 2017 San Lorenzo delivers the goods, and then some.HK$860.00 -

A shade darker than their Del Comune di Verduno and with a firmer nose of cherry and raspberry with plenty of depth. Ripe and deep. Hints of mint and cardamom, but not from new oak as this has seen only large casks. Elegant and sappy cherry fruit palate with firm, finely chiselled tannins which never dominate the fruit. Succulent and with a fine, long, tannic grip on the finish.HK$1,520.00 -

The 2019 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno, tasted from barrel, is another potent wine from Alessandria. Heady and explosive, the 2019 possesses tremendous energy and drive from start to finish. Dark red fruit, gravel, incense, scorched earth, rose petal, licorice and iron are some of the many notes that race out of the glass. The 2019 is wild and racy, sort of like a misbehaved child, but in the best sense! I can't wait to see how it turns out.HK$1,500.00 -

I absolutely have a soft spot for the Pelaverga grape that achieves such beautiful, but unusual, characteristics when given the chance. The 2018 Verduno Pelaverga Speziale is a happy and cheerful wine destined for easy-drinking occasions like with pizza or wood-fire flatbread with spicy sausage and broccoli. Native to Verduno in Piedmont, the grape typically shows a strong layer of freshly milled white pepper. That's exactly what you get in this cool and balanced vintage. This is a lean-bodied red to drink within the next 18 months.HK$2,165.00 -

The 2008 Barolo Conca possesses a bit more mid-palate stuffing and richness than the Giachini, along with a softer, more immediate personality. Dark red fruit, flowers and spices meld together effortlessly in this round wine. This is a fairly radiant, generous style for the year, but it works beautifully.HK$2,640.00 -

The 1988 Barbaresco offers the classic nose of dried cherries, herbs, cedar, and toasty oak. In the mouth, it is medium to full-bodied, with considerable tannic clout. The long finish is dominated by the wine's tannins. It should benefit from 3-4 years of cellaring and keep for 10-15. All of Gaja's 1988 Barbarescos are backward, reserved wines. Even after sitting four days with the corks pulled they exhibited no signs of oxidation. While they should be uncommonly long-lived, I did not see quite the flesh and richness possessed by such vintages as 1985 and 1982. Importer: Vinifera Imports, Ronkonkoma, NY.HK$1,795.00 -

Gorgeous red, with attractive rose petal, violet, chocolate, spice and cassis flavors offered in an elegant and racy package. Sophisticated, well-integrated tannins, medium body, supple and has a long, delicious finish. Tempting now, better after 2000. Gaja made no single-vineyard crus this vintage, putting his best vats in this regular Barbaresco instead. 3,583 cases made. -HK$2,040.00 -
