  • Luciano Sandrone Barbera d'Alba 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89)

The 2014 Barbera d'Alba is a solid wine for the year. Rose petal, bright raspberry fruit, mint and sweet spices are nicely pushed forward. Bright and medium in body, the 2014 is a bit angular and lacks the seamlessness of the very best years, but it is nicely done. This is about as good as it gets in 2014 for Barbera.
  • Luciano Sandrone Barbera d'Alba 2021 (1x150cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (91)

Inky purple in color, the 2021 Barbera D'Alba is a serious and deep wine with aromas of plum, black licorice, lavender, and smoky cedar. Medium-bodied, it fills the palate with plush tannins, even acidity, a weightless feel, and a touch of warmth on the finish. It’s going to improve if given a chance to rest another year, but it will provide prime drinking over the next 5-6 years.
  • Luciano Sandrone Barbera d'Alba 2022 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (91)

The 2022 Barbera D'Alba offers a more luxurious, oak-spiced profile in its notes of toasted cedar, baked plum, vanilla beans, and violets. Full-bodied, plush, ripe, and long, it’s going to take time to integrate. Give it at least another year or two and drink over the following 6-8 years. A robust and warming wine, this is a solid entry for Cab drinkers.

  • Luciano Sandrone Barolo Aleste 1985 (6x75cl)

Luciano Sandrone’s 1985 Barolo Cannubi Boschis blossoms on the palate with expressive aromatics and layers of fruit, both supported by silky tannins. An early masterpiece from Sandrone, the 1985 is peaking today. I don’t imagine it will improve much from here, but it is stunning right now.

  • Luciano Sandrone Barolo Aleste 2007 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (97)

The 2007 Barolo Cannubi Boschis dazzles from start to finish. It shows marvelous delineation and freshness in its volumptuos, harmonious fruit, with no hard edges and an expansive, textured personality that conquers both the palate and intellect. Here, too, the oak is very well integrated, while the wine's balance and overall sense of harmony are nothing short of stunning. This is one of the very finest vintages of Cannubi Boschis.
  • Luciano Sandrone Barolo Aleste 2010 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (97)

The 2010 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is just starting to show the first signs of aromatic maturity. Dark and dense on the palate, the 2010 remains massively tannic in feel, though. Tasting the 2010 next to the current releases shows the style prevalent at the time that favored more overt fruit, greater extraction and heavier oak signatures. Black cherry, espresso, chocolate, menthol and dried flowers all develop as the 2010 opens up with time in the glass. This is dark, virile and powerful in style; I would wait a few years, as it is going through a phase of closure today.
  • Luciano Sandrone Barolo Aleste 2011 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 2011 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is super impressive. Early signs of aromatic nuance have started to develop, but just barely. More than anything else, the 2011 impresses for its body and pure depth, both of which the 2011 has in spades. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice and spice all build as this dramatic Barolo shows off its allure. The 2011 has aged beautifully. I would prefer to drink it over the next decade. This is a re-release from the winery.

  • Luciano Sandrone Barolo Aleste 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (97+)

The 2013 Barolo Aleste is a wine of striking purity and nuance. It is also one of the most finessed, vivid young Barolos I have ever tasted from Sandrone. The translucence of Nebbiolo comes through loud and clear. Freshly cut flowers, mint and finely cut fruit are some of the signatures. This wine has developed beautifully in recent vintages as the oak influence is less than it was just a few years ago. Beams of tannin and bright, salivating acidity add finesse to this translucent, exceptional Barolo. Aleste is the new name Sandrone is using for the Barolo formerly known as Cannubi Boschis.
  • Luciano Sandrone Barolo Aleste 2014 (1x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (93)

This is the second year Aleste is produced instead of Cannubi Boschis, however the grapes are exactly the same. The 2014 Barolo Aleste is named after Luciano Sandrone's grandchildren Alessia and Stefano. The 2014 is still wound up and will require extra time to find its footing. The Sandrone family lost 25% of their fruit production in this challenging harvest. The wine offers fragrant notes of wild cherry and cassis with smoke, crushed stone and candied orange peel. The tannins are firm and textured. It is the palate (more than the nose) that requires more time to soften.

The 2015 Barolo Aleste was also tasted at the estate alongside the 2021 vintage and is an incredible wine at this moment. While I occasionally find some wines from 2015 to be heavier than I prefer, this one showcases fantastic balance in its depth and expressive personality. It reveals raspberry, cherry liqueur, fresh leather, porcini, sweet spice, and tobacco aromas. The Luciano Sandrone 2016 Barolo Aleste is a very special wine for several reasons. First, we get that exceedingly smooth and seamless quality that we saw in many of the other new releases in this portfolio. This trait sums up the house style. Second, this vintage delivers impeccable intensity that transcends the various fruit, spice, earthy and ethereal components of the bouquet. That equal intensity spread across all parts of the wine is what creates those beautiful transitions. The wine is layered and rich in terms of mouthfeel with a long, fruit and spice-driven finish. The tannins are tucked in at the back, surrounded amply by the wine's textural richness and fruit weight.
