Sicily
Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, is not only known for its breath-taking landscapes and rich history but also for producing exceptional fine wines. With its sunny climate, volcanic soils, and coastal influences, Sicily offers a unique terroir that results in a diverse range of high-quality wines. The region is home to several renowned vineyards and wineries that have gained global recognition for their excellence.
One of the most famous vineyards in Sicily is Planeta, a family-owned winery that produces a wide range of wines across different terroirs. Their wines, such as Cerasuolo di Vittoria and Nero d'Avola, capture the essence of Sicily with their bold flavors, vibrant acidity, and expressive aromatics. Another prominent vineyard is Donnafugata, known for its premium wines like Mille e Una Notte and Ben Ryé, which showcase the region's indigenous grape varieties and winemaking traditions.
Sicily is renowned for its red wines, and Nero d'Avola is the most emblematic grape varietal of the region. It produces full-bodied red wines with rich dark fruit flavors, hints of spice, and velvety tannins. Vineyards like Tasca d'Almerita and Feudo Maccari excel in crafting exceptional Nero d'Avola wines that reflect the unique Sicilian terroir.
The island is also gaining recognition for its white wines, particularly those made from the indigenous grape variety, Grillo. These wines are known for their crisp acidity, citrus flavors, and floral aromatics. Notable vineyards like Planeta and Firriato produce outstanding Grillo wines that capture the vibrant and refreshing characteristics of Sicily.
Additionally, Sicily's warm climate is ideal for producing sweet wines. The Passito di Pantelleria, made from Zibibbo grapes, is a luscious and aromatic dessert wine. The famous vineyard of Marco De Bartoli is known for its exceptional Passito di Pantelleria wines, which display the island's mastery in producing exquisite sweet wines.
Sicily's fine wines truly represent the island's beauty, history, and passion for winemaking. Whether you are savoring a robust Nero d'Avola, a crisp Grillo, or a delightful Passito di Pantelleria, Sicilian wines offer a captivating journey of flavors that showcase the unique terroir and winemaking expertise of the region.

Decanter (97)This definitive wine of pure Carricante is given extensive contact on the lees, without wood, taking its structure from the grapes and terroir. Pale with golden highlights, it offers iodised notes on the expressive nose and an almost shy (still very young) palate that builds slowly in the mouth to a finale of energy and length. |

Vinous (95)The 2019 Etna Bianco Superiore Pietra Marina captivates. It’s perfumed and floral, with enriching notes of almond paste and confectionery spice that perfectly accentuate a smoky core of white peaches. There’s more lift on the palate, but it's a little backward, possessing wiry textures and an intense mineral core that adds depth to its citrus-inflected orchard fruits. Nervous acidity forces the mouth to water and maintains a dazzling freshness as inner florals resonate and a sour lime concentration settles in. The 2019 is just an infant today, compact yet complex, balanced and loaded with character. It will be a gorgeous Etna Bianco to follow over the next decade or more. |

Wine Advocate (96)The Alberelli di Giodo 2019 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese is a wine true to its volcanic roots. This elegant grape variety reveals a tight embroidery of aromas with wild rose, sour cherry, white pepper and campfire ash. The tannins are polished and long, and this deftly made Nerello Mascalese is endowed with plenty of natural freshness and tart berry flavors that drive a long, nuanced finish. This is another super star bottle from winemaker Carlo Ferrini. |

Wine Advocate (96)Closed with a red wax capsule, the Alberelli di Giodo 2021 Nerello Mascalese does a great job of transmitting energy, finesse and elegance. This is an exceptional expression of Etna's protagonist grape. It effortlessly shows small berry aromas of cassis and wild berry along with some dried herb, mountain flower, orange peel and crushed stone. Carlo Ferrini has hit this nail squarely on the head. |

Wine Advocate (95)From Tuscan winemaker Carlo Ferrini, who shares deep love for Sicily, the Alberelli di Giodo 2022 Nerello Mascalese (a production of 9,000 bottles all with a red wax capsule) is one of the best made wines from the volcano on the market today. Carlo Ferrini's signature touch adds an extra layer of dark fruit concentration and sweet spice. Indeed, the wine ages in 500- and 700-liter barrels for 18 months. Fruit comes from a 1.9-hectare site with 50- to 80-year-old plants at 560 to 850 meters in elevation on the north side of Etna. The tannins are expertly managed, and although you feel that firm structure, there is enough dark fruit to smooth it all out, giving the wine depth and power. |

Barone di Villagrande, Contrada Villagrande, Etna Rosso 2018 exemplifies the pinnacle of Etna’s volcanic terroir. Crafted by the esteemed Barone di Villagrande, this wine originates from the Contrada Villagrande vineyard nestled on Mount Etna’s fertile slopes. The 2018 vintage is a harmonious blend of indigenous Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes, meticulously cultivated to express the unique minerality of the region. Following a careful hand-harvest, the grapes undergo gentle fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve their vibrant flavours. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, imparting subtle complexity and a refined structure. On the palate, it reveals enticing aromas of red cherries, raspberries, and a hint of smoky earthiness, culminating in a balanced and elegant finish. Barone di Villagrande, Contrada Villagrande, Etna Rosso 2018 is a distinguished expression of Sicilian craftsmanship, perfect for discerning fine wine enthusiasts. |

James Suckling (97)Stand back as this extremely intense and vibrant Etna dry white arrives! As many herbal and positively vegetal aromas as white fruit and citrus. Super-sleek and focused palate with a dangerous amount of mineral energy and samurai sword acidity. The finish lasts for minutes! Enormous aging potential. Drink or hold. |

James Suckling (97)It's time to taste the volcano! Although this is still very young, it has an amazingly refined nose that reminds us of top-class red Burgundy. Quite full-bodied, but super-elegant and transparent, with very fine tannins that build to a stunning crescendo at the mineral finish. Patience will be rewarded! Drinkable now, but best from 2023. |

Jeb Dunnuck (93)Pouring a medium garnet color, the 2022 Etna Rosso Contrada Monte Serra is elegant and refined with ripe cherries, chalky earth, strawberries, wild herbes de Provence, and dusty earth. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a stony, savory finish, it’s graceful and refined, with a Burgundian-like aesthetic. Drink 2025-2037. |

Jeb Dunnuck (96)Minty and lifted, the 2015 Etna Rosso Riserva Rovittello has notes of fresh black cherries, sage, rosemary, and fresh leather. With ripe tannins and even acidity, it’s long on the palate, lasting for ages. It has a deeper profile, although it’s also more elegant and long. One of the top wines in this tasting, drink it over the next 15 years. Drink 2025-2040. |

Jeb Dunnuck (94)Incredibly structured, the garnet red 2015 Etna Rosso Riserva Serra Della Contessa exudes a noble feel, offering a complex yet pure array of aromas, including dried cherries, dried orange, dried herbs, spice, and smoky earth. Medium-bodied but deep and long on the palate, it is hitting its stride, though it should have another ten or more years ahead of it. I wouldn’t expect it to soften much in terms of its grip. Drink 2025-2037. |

Vinous (95)The 2015 Rovittello Particella No. 341 Alberello Centenario is a bit backward today, mixing dusty rose and lavender with nuances of blackberry and spice. It's cool-toned and pleasantly tense with streamlined red berry fruits that slowly saturate the palate. Hints of licorice emerge through the long and structured finale as the 2015 continues to evolve in bottle. Hands off for now, as the Rovittello is in an adolescent stage. |
