Tuscany
Tuscany, a picturesque region in central Italy, is renowned for producing some of the world's finest wines. With its rolling hills, Mediterranean climate, and rich cultural heritage, Tuscany offers a perfect combination of terroir and winemaking expertise. The region is home to legendary vineyards and wineries that have become synonymous with excellence and tradition.
One of the most famous vineyards in Tuscany is Antinori, a family-owned winery with a history dating back over 600 years. Their wines, such as Tignanello and Solaia, have achieved iconic status, showcasing the region's commitment to quality and innovation. Another renowned vineyard is Castello di Volpaia, known for its exceptional Chianti Classico wines that beautifully represent the Sangiovese grape.
Tuscany is synonymous with Chianti, a red wine made primarily from Sangiovese grapes. Chianti Classico, produced in the heart of the Chianti region, is highly regarded for its balance, elegance, and age-worthiness. Vineyards like Castello di Ama, Fontodi, and Fèlsina craft outstanding Chianti Classico wines that capture the essence of Tuscan winemaking.
The region is also famous for Brunello di Montalcino, a prestigious red wine made from Sangiovese Grosso grapes. Montalcino is home to renowned wineries such as Biondi-Santi and Casanova di Neri, which produce exceptional Brunello di Montalcino wines with remarkable structure, depth, and longevity.
Tuscany's coastal region, Bolgheri, has gained international acclaim for its Super Tuscan wines. These wines often blend international grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with local varieties. Notable vineyards in Bolgheri include Tenuta San Guido, known for its iconic Sassicaia, and Ornellaia, which produces the renowned Ornellaia wine.
Tuscany's diverse terroir also allows for the production of white wines, with Vernaccia di San Gimignano being the most notable. Vernaccia vineyards like Teruzzi & Puthod and Panizzi create crisp and aromatic white wines that showcase the region's versatility.

Vinous (98)The 2020 Galatrona is stunning. In fact, the 2020 is one of the best vintages of the Galatrona I can remember tasting. I am especially impressed by its vertical intensity and explosive energy. All the elements are so impeccably woven together. Dark-toned fruit, crushed rocks, menthol, licorice and spice build into the intense, palate-staining finish. The 2018 spent 18-20 months in French oak, about 25% new, with some larger barrels thrown into the mix. Magnificent. |

Falstaff (100)Dark ruby red colour. Finely spicy on the nose, blackcurrants, fine earthy notes, plus a hint of dried rose petal, some cigar box. On the palate a fruity texture, entwined with hearty, juicy tannin, elegant flow, comes back long and juicy in the finish on fine spicy tones, still a bit young. |

James Suckling (100)The floral aromas are spellbinding, with aromas of violets, lilacs, orange peel, raspberries, rose petals, and some oranges. It’s medium- to full-bodied with crunchy and open-grain tannins that are creamy and caressing. It’s endless in the finish. Crunchy and energetic. A wine that is thoughtful and gives you such great pleasure. Such purity. It’s like eating perfectly ripened grape must. Pure merlot. Drinkable in many ways, but will come together beautifully. A new reference point for merlot in Italy. Drink after 2028. |

James Suckling (94)There's a beautiful purity of fruit to this young red with currants and raspberries on the nose and palate. It's full-bodied with fine tannins and a fresh, clean finish. Precise and very fine. Best ever from here. A blend of sangiovese and merlot. Wonderful value for the quality. Drink or hold. |

Vinous (87+)The 2014 Torrione, Petrolo's Sangiovese-based blend, comes across as a touch compact, with less of the fleshiness and radiance of the best years. Dark stone fruit, smoke, tobacco, herbs and scorched earth are nicely delineated, but in this vintage, the Torrione can only offer modest depth. The short, abrupt finish is another reminder of how challenging this vintage was. |

James Suckling (95)Aromas of dried flowers, dried berries, cherries and hints of stones. Full-bodied, very firm and silky. An intense underlying energy of acidity and a lovely finish. 75% sangiovese, 20% merlot and 5% cabernet sauvignon. One of the best ever? Drink in 2020. |

Vinous (90)The 2017 Torrione is an attractive mid-tier wine in this range. Smoke, leather, grilled herbs, menthol and licorice wrap around a core of dark fruit. Potent and dense, with imposing tannins, the 2017 needs time in bottle to be at its very best. In 2017, the Torrione is a bit richer than is typically the case, so patience is key. |

James Suckling (95)A red with plenty of blackberry, black-olive, floral and oyster-shell character. It’s full-bodied, yet layered, extremely polished and beautiful. A dusty texture. Hazelnut and walnut undertones. From organically grown grapes. A little more merlot and cabernet sauvignon in the blend. Gorgeous now, but better after 2021 and onwards. |

The Piaggia Carmignano Riserva 2000 epitomises the rich heritage of Tuscany’s Carmignano region. Crafted by the esteemed Piaggia family, renowned for their dedication to traditional viticulture since the early 20th century, this venerable vintage showcases a meticulous blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Hand-harvested from carefully selected vineyards on the hilltops, the grapes undergo a slow fermentation process in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by extended ageing in French oak barrels. The 2000 Riserva reveals a deep ruby hue, with complex aromas of dark cherries, cedar, and subtle spices. On the palate, it offers a harmonious balance of robust tannins and vibrant acidity, culminating in a long, elegant finish. This exceptional wine reflects Piaggia’s unwavering commitment to quality and terroir, making it a distinguished addition to any fine wine collection. |

Vinous (96)It's hard to put the glass down while exploring the depths of raspberry compote, dried orange peels, roses, exotic spice and a dusting of cocoa that form the absolutely stunning bouquet of the 2019 Carmignano Riserva Piaggia. This is pure elegance. It's silky and refined as liquid violet florals and ripe red and black fruits easily rush across the palate. Its vibrant acidity maintains exceptional finesse despite the massive primary concentration slowly taking hold. The 2019 finishes long with a coating of sweet tannins and balsamic-tinged cherry. The balance here is amazing, which might trick readers into finishing their bottles far too quickly, but trust me, the best is truly yet to come. This is Rock Star juice. |

Vinous (97)Pian dell’Orino’s 2006 Brunello di Montalcino was another towering wine. Though not quite as overt and powerful as the Cerbaoina, it too, was remarkably polished and sophisticated. Pian dell’Orino remains one of the most overlooked estates in Montalcino, but the wines rarely fail to deliver the goods. |

Wine Advocate (97)The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is more than a worthy follow up to the spectacular 2006. Freshly cut flowers, violets, licorice, leather and tar meld into layers of dark fruit in a dazzling display of elegance and power. Silky tannins and expressive perfumed notes both add further refinement on the huge, explosive finish. The combination of ripeness of the year allied to a classic sense of structure is immensely appealing. This is one of the few 2007s I tasted that still needs time in the cellar, even though today it is flat-out stunning. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. |

Vinous (93)Good bright medium red. Captivating aromas of red cherry, violet, licorice and tobacco are complicated by a note of gunflint. Lush and sweet but with outstanding definition and lift to the flavors of raspberry, red cherry jelly, minerals and mocha. The juicy, long finish features smooth, sweet tannins that expand with air and repeating notes of red cherry and flint. A fleshier than usual style of Brunello for owners Jan Erbach and Caroline Pobizer, but this creamy, ripe wine is once again one of the handful of top wines of the Denominazione. In fact, Erbach told me he much prefers this wine to the wonderful '08 he made last year. |

The Pian dell'Orino Brunello di Montalcino 2010 hails from the idyllic hills of Tuscany, crafted meticulously by the esteemed Pian dell'Orino winery. The distinctive terroir, consisting of marl and limestone-rich hills, provides the stage for these exceptional Sangiovese grapes. Savour the garnet hue and aroma of wild cherries and spices, a testament to the artisanal biodynamic farming methods. The Brunello di Montalcino 2010 offers a rich, full-bodied palate, laced with velvety tannins. But it's the persistence of its classically Tuscan bright, tart, and tangy flavour that sets this vintage apart. Jan Hendrik Erbach and Caroline Pobitzer, Pian dell'Orino's passionate custodians, produce a limited quantity to ensure impeccable quality. Their philosophy of 'less is more' is echoed in every sip of the Pian dell'Orino Brunello di Montalcino 2010, underlining its status as a paragon amongst Italian wines. Truly, a treasure for every connoisseur's cellar. |

Vinous (97+)Autumnal spices, sweet herbs and white smoke give way to ripe cherries and hints of licorice as the deeply seductive 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Bassolino di Sopra unfolds in the glass. This envelops the palate in opulent textural fruits (red and hints of blue), with balsam herbs and nuances of candied citrus lifted by bright acidity. Sweet tannins frame the expression nicely through the slightly candied finish; yet make no mistake, while the Bassolino di Sopra may show the sunny nature of the 2015 vintage, it does so in a wonderfully harmonious way. This single-vineyard Brunello is simply a pleasure to taste and will continue to wow readers over the next 15–20 years. |

Vinous (97)The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vigneti del Versante is impossible to ignore. It entices the senses with a burst of crushed cherries and strawberries before giving way to hints of cedar shavings and worn leather. This displays remarkable balance, silken yet energetic, with red berry fruit and tinges of blood orange and spice swirling throughout. It leaves a tart cranberry concentration offset by violet inner florals and balsam herbs, tapering off long and gently tannic while leaving a lingering, pleasantly chewy sensation. |

Vinous (97)Luminous red. Very deep, complex, expressive aromas of red cherry, raspberry, balsamic oils, violet, and sweet spices on the highly perfumed nose; you can definitely recognize the terroir of Sesta here. Clean, juicy and suave, with multilayered, rich flavors similar to the aromas and an almost smoky nuance. Finishes very long with rising, noble tannins and a saline note. This is an absolutely knockout Brunello that is drinking already very well but will have no difficulty lasting another 12-15 years. Made with grapes from the Scopeta, Cancello Rosso and Bassolino di Sopra vineyards. |
