Barolo
Known as the king of wines, it is potent, complex and long-lived wine made from the Nebbiolo grape. The appellation is spread over 2,134 ha in total and consists of several villages and communes. divided into a multitude of individual vineyard sites and crus similar to Burgundy, with many producers owning small plots of the individual crus.
The main winemaking approach is a long maceration of Nebbiolo grapes - between 30 to 60 days -followed by a long maturation period in large old casks for a minimum of 38 months. And many producers often choose to age their wines even longer than this because of the intense fruit and powerful tannins of their grapes.
The combination of microclimate, altitude, soil, exposition and each winemaker’s individual touch is what makes every Barolo different. And in the main communes such as Serralunga, Castiglione Falletto, and La Morra, their Barolos are renowned for certain characteristics unique to each of them, due to their differing soils and exposition.

Vinous (94)Mascarello’s 1985 Barolo Monprivato is a bit more forward in its aromatics than it is on the palate, where the wine still offers remarkable power and breadth, both signatures of the 1985 vintage. This is a good, but not remarkable, example of a Barolo that can be a real show-stopper. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (97)The 2006 Barolo Monprivato (magnum) moves us into another register, a register defined by power and textural intensity. Dark fruit, lavender, spice, graphite and crushed rocks open first, before swaths of tannin make themselves felt on the mid-palate and finish. Readers lucky enough to own the 2006 are in for a real treat. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (96)The 2008 Barolo Monprivato (magnum) remains a wine of total finesse. Deeply pitched aromatics give the 2008 its decidedly exotic flair. Blood orange, mint, hard candy and bright red-toned fruit all play in that same register, showing striking inner sweetness and tons of sheer allure. The 2008 has always been captivating. It is all that and more on this evening. |

Jancis Robinson (18+)Pale crimson (much bluer than the Villero). Dense and meaty on the nose. Masses of tannin and extract with autumn leaves. Not nearly as open as the Villero. |

Wine Spectator (96)A perfumed style, boasting floral, cherry, kirsch and licorice flavors. Slightly chewy, yet elegant overall, with fine balance and a lingering finish of macerated cherry, earth and tobacco notes. Shows fine length and intensity, leaving an essence of mineral. Best from 2021 through 2043. 1,941 cases made. |

Wine Advocate (94)Mascarello's legendary cru, from this historic 15-acre, southwest-facing plot not far from the town of Castiglione Falletto, never disappoints. The 2014 Barolo Monprivato is as engaging and as individual as I had hoped it would be. Still in its youth, the bouquet reaches out with wild berry and strawberry, and it has started to show unique tones of natural rubber, tropical fruit and peach—not at all what you might expect from a Nebbiolo, but very delicate and elegant nonetheless. Like every Monprivato vintage, it will take years in the bottle to reach its full potential. Still very closed, this one will only just begin to open after the summer. |

Wine Enthusiast (99)You can lose yourself just in the aromas of this drop-dead gorgeous wine, thanks to a lovely bouquet that recalls rose, violet, vineyard dust, licorice and menthol. Boasting a winning combination of structure and finesse, the precise, full-bodied palate features juicy red cherry, raspberry, tobacco and white pepper alongside noble, enveloping tannins. It's impeccably balanced, with fresh acidity. Drink 2025–2035. |

Vinous (93)The 2016 Barolo Monprivato is rich, sensual and layered in the glass, with a bit more mid-palate depth and creaminess than past vintages have shown. Bright red berry fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and rose petal are some of the notes that grace this pliant, open-knit Barolo. |

Vinous (93)The 2017 Barolo Monprivato is elegant, classy and nuanced. Crushed red berry fruit, spice and blood orange lend and exotic flair to this silky, mid-weight Barolo. The 2017 loses some of its persistence with air, but it offers tons of immediacy and sheer allure. Best of all, the 2017 will drink well with minimal cellaring. This is one of the better recent vintages of Monprivato the Mascarello family has released. |

Wine Advocate (95)Tasted next to the 2020 vintage, the Giuseppe Mascarello 2019 Barolo Monprivato delivers a much darker and richer presentation of fruit. You get freshness and brightness with Bing cherry, cassis and dried pomegranate. The 2019 vintage is clearly more complex and offers more overall depth. As Elena Mascarello tells me, "2020 is all light, and 2019 leans into darkness." In this case, that darkness is what we look for in a wine to put aside in the cellar. |

Wine Advocate (94+)The 2003 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Ca d’Morissio is a powerful, seamless wine endowed with masses of dark fruit. This is a rather opulent, almost port-like Barolo from Mascarello that captures all of the best qualities of the 2003 harvest while avoiding the hard tannins that plague so many wines. A blast of iron, tar and smoke informs the long, virile finish. This will be a fascinating Barolo to follow over the coming years and decades. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2033. |

Wine Advocate (96+)The 2004 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Ca d’Morissio is totally seamless and beautiful. It possesses gorgeous textural richness and finesse with virtually no perception of tannin. Rose petals, flowers, raspberries and mint come alive in the glass, but it is the wine’s subtle yet insistent chalky minerality that is the thread that holds the wine together. This is a hugely impressive Barolo with a bright future. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2034. |

Wine Advocate (95)This is the current vintage on the market now. The 2008 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Cà d'Morissio is a polished and expressive creation that has inched slowly along its aging trajectory in the many years that have passed since the harvest. The wine has one foot in the realm of primary aromas with dark fruit and dried plum. The other foot has already moved toward tertiary tones of campfire ash, licorice, road paving and perfumed white truffle. The effects of oxygen have started their magic on this well-built and solid wine. The long finish ends with dryness and austerity. |
