Vinous (92)The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino wafts up with a dusty display of cherry, wild berries, crushed stone and savory herbs. This is silky and elegant in feel, offering balanced acidity matched by masses of tart red and black berry fruits, along with firming tannins. It’s long, rich and dark with haunting inner florals, but also a surprisingly classic structure. Despite a 30% loss of production in 2017, Col d"Orcia made a balanced and highly enjoyable Brunello.

Vinous (94)Deep red. Complex nose combines extremely fragrant aromas of redcurrant, red cherry, spices, and flowers. Supple and very pure, with good lift and definition to its flavors of redcurrant, tobacco, flint and herbs. Finishes with serious but noble tannins and good lift, spreading out nicely on the back, with a repeating lingering and very perfumed note of violet. An outstanding Brunello; perhaps the best Nastagio to date.

Vinous (91)Deep, dark and full of balsamic complexities, the late-release 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Nastagio from Col d'Orcia slowly blossoms in the glass. Plum, currants and tobacco brighten and evolve into notes of cherry laced with fresh cut roses. It’s silky at first, verging on fleshy, yet quick to reveal a coating of youthfully grippy tannin and tart red berry fruits. This finishes long, dry and intensely structured, with hints of wild herbs and spice. The Nastagio is matured in a combination of barrique and tonneaux for the first year, followed by another two years in large botti. It’s a wine that is meant to be more immediate than the rest of the portfolio; yet the 2015 is anything but immediate.

Vinous (94)The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Nastagio is youthfully coy, requiring time to release its dark fruits and savory exotic spices. This is velvety in feel yet not weighty at all, with ripe black fruits contrasting nervous acidity as autumnal spices come forward toward the close. Hints of vanilla, tobacco and sweet herbs linger through the long, structured finale. The 2016 finds a wonderful balance of fruit, structure and acidity, and it should be glorious in another five to ten years’ time.

Vinous (94)The 1977 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a revelation. Crushed flowers, autumn leaves, mint and sweet exotic spices are some of the notes that emerge from the Pinot-like bouquet. In a blind tasting, the 1977 could easily be mistaken for a Burgundy, until the Sangiovese acidity kicks in. There is still plenty of depth in the fruit, and little doubt the 1977 will make it to its 40th birthday. This is a remarkable achievement from Col d'Orcia.

Vinous (94)The 1979 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is flat-out stunning, making it almost impossible to pull away from the glass. Plum sauce, crushed ashen stone, balsam herbs, tobacco, dark, dark chocolate and the slightest hint of candied orange peel make it hard to ignore. This is incredibly deep in color, with only an amber hue around the rim. It’s rich and soft on the palate, contrasting a sour-citrus twang with fleshy remnants of black cherry, motivated by bright acidity, and leaving the senses literally buzzing with juicy tension. The contrasts here are amazing, and the length is as well. A wonderfully mature expression of Sangiovese, and one that should continue to shine for years to come.

Vinous (97)(5.8 g/l total acidity, 3.44 pH, 26.9 g/l dry extract, 14% alcohol): Bright amber-red. Despite the rather evolved color, the nose is brooding and still closed, revealing captivating aromas of red cherry, raspberry, minerals, and brown spices with aeration. Big, broad, ripe and sweet on the palate, boasting a lovely lush texture and impressive fullness to its red cherry, peach, vanilla, cinnamon and mineral flavors. The very long finish features broad, polished, building tannins and noteworthy sweetness. Aged for 63 months in large oak casks, this is a very great wine.

Vinous (94+)Moderately saturated bright red-ruby. Raspberry, rose oil, sour red cherry, and Asian spices on the nose, with a note of cola gaining strength with air. Refined and concentrated at the same time, with sweet red berry, herbal and mineral flavors becoming fuller with air. Finishes with impressive energy and lingering red fruit and floral qualities that are nicely buffered by fine-grained tannins. Much less powerful but then again also more graceful than the 2010 Poggio al Vento. I also noticed this picks up considerable volume with air, so my suggestion is to decant an hour or two ahead, should you decide to pop a cork early. Lay this away.

Vinous (96)(6 g/l total acidity, 3.35 pH, 27.5 g/l dry extract, 14.5% alcohol): Good bright medium red with an amber rim. Deep, refined aromas of red cherry, strawberry jam, licorice and wet underbrush. Supple, suave, creamy and rich, with a suggestion of white chocolate complementing ripe red fruit flavors. Very soft and silky, but also shows well-integrated acidity and very polished tannins. Most impressive today on the long, scented back end, which exudes a delicate but very persistent flavor of candied small red fruits. Aged for 65 months in large oak casks. This wine was made from a very low yield, and a growing season marked by two deep freezes in spring and a very hot September and October. In fact, the 1985 vintage is one of the few hot years in Montalcino that gave truly memorable wines--unlike, for example, 1997 and 2003.

Vinous (96)The 1988 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento boasts exceptional polish and textural elegance. Dark cherries, eucalyptus, menthol, spices and leather come alive in the glass as this vivid, vibrant Brunello shows off its stunning pedigree. The 1988 possesses dazzling freshness, clarity and precision. This is a very much a 1980s wine built on length and energy rather than power.

Vinous (94)The 1993 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento is remarkably fresh, vibrant and youthful. Amazingly, the tannins are still a bit sturdy. Dark cherries, licorice, new leather and spices are some of the many notes that flesh out in this fat, rich Brunello. A wine of gorgeous contrasts, the 1993 is at once dense, yet austere, with one foot in the past and the other in the present.

Vinous (96)The 1995 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Vento Riserva is distinctly savory with a beguiling green tinge. It mixes stone dust, sage, autumnal spices and dried strawberries. The wine is pure and feminine with silky textures and medium-bodied weight. Ripe red berries and crisp mineral tones swirl across a wave of cooling acidity. It displays amazing grace and refinement, coming across as far more youthful than anticipated while leaving a web of fine-grained tannins to resonate. This is a spectacular showing and there is no fear of decline in the near future.

Vinous (92)The 1998 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento comes across as a bit earlier-maturing in style, which isn't such a bad thing for readers who may also be holding some of the sturdier vintages. At the same time, the tannins are a little less polished than they are in the great years, and that is just part of the wine's DNA. Wild cherries, rosemary, herbs, licorice and leather are some of the notes that flow through to the finish. As good as the 1998 is, the finesse of the very best years isn't quite there.
