The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is the biggest of the bunch. This wine delivers a lasting sense of structure and intensity that is especially apparent as this Barbaresco hits the palate. The bouquet exhibits signs of ripe fruit with soft layers of blackberry preserves and cherry liqueur. The wine's tannic structure is solid and firmly stitched together, yet this wine is slightly softer and perhaps sweeter than the Riserva Muncagota, for example. This is yet another wine destined for long bottle-aging.HK$840.00 -

The Pajè vineyard faces the Tanaro River and is tucked at back of a narrow theater of vines. The site is often characterized by a floral note of rose and violet that comes thought nicely in the Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè. With those sweet floral notes comes an open-knit mouthfeel and a more immediate drinking style with soft, silky tannins. In fact, this was the second of nine wines served in a flight that started with the lightest Riservas and ended with the most powerful wines.HK$2,935.00 -

This is the first wine served in a flight of nine that increase in intensity and power moving forward. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Pora opens to a medium-light color with garnet highlights. Aromas include wild cherry, cassis and blue flower. You also get hints of crushed limestone. The Pora vineyard is near the Tanaro River Valley, where warm air accumulates, and the vines are planted in fertile soils. The extra heat and humidity of the area makes for accessible wines that are ready to drink and are less complex overall.HK$2,620.00 -

The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo comes from an area that is further removed from the Tanaro River and has southwestern exposures. It shows a typical profile for Nebbiolo with rich fruit, a velvety mouthfeel and textural volume that is delivered with ample blackberry, blackcurrant and spice. The character of this wine is generous and rich. There is plenty of meat on these bones.HK$2,680.00 -

Querciabella's 2015 Batàr (Chardonnay/Pinot Bianco) is very delicate and restrained, especially within the context of the year. Lemon confit, white flowers, orange peel and mint all develop nicely in the glass, but it is the wine's persistence that stands out most. The 2015 is one of the most polished, gracious Batàrs I can remember tasting.HK$770.00 -

Crafted from meticulously selected Nebbiolo grapes harvested from the prestigious Marcenasco vineyard, this vintage showcases exceptional expression of terroir. Under Renato Ratti’s expert guidance, the grapes undergo traditional fermentation in stainless steel tanks, followed by ageing in a combination of large Slavonian oak and fine barriques for 36 months. This is the bread-and-butter Barolo from Ratti, with 70,000 bottles produced. Fruit is sourced from over 15 hectares of vine planted on characteristic blue marl soils. The 2020 Barolo Marcenasco is an international classic, and I have had the fortune of following this wine over 20-plus vintages. I always like the unassuming personality of Marcenasco. It gives you character but never stretches too far in any one stylistic direction. This vintage shows some sweet oak and cinnamon, but you also get plenty of bright fruit. You could fault it for a little too much oak, which appears with more strength in 2020.HK$1,005.00 -

Bright red. Enticing aromas of violet, licorice and minerals. Fresh and juicy; saline, licorice and dark plum flavors are lifted by vibrant acidity. Finishes savory and long, with an enticing glyceral, fleshy quality. Aged about two years in large 20- to 45-hL Slavonian oak barrels and 500-liter tonneaux and is made with a 75%/25% blend of grapes from the vineyards in Romitorio and Castelnuovo dell’Abate, respectively.HK$1,270.00 -

This wine blew me away and remains one of my favorites in this report. The organic San Giusto a Rentennano 2021 Percarlo is all Sangiovese and represents excellent work by detail-minded vintner Luca Martini di Cigala. It shows delightful intensity and richness backed by chiseled fruit and lifted aromas of blackcurrant, spice, tar, earth and violet. There is power here, but the wine is also delicate. I love the determination of this vintage. Percarlo plays beautifully on the nose and over the palate with freshness, chalky tannins and lingering fruit. There's nothing heavy about it. It ages in 500-liter and 30-hectoliter oak casks for 22 months. Production is 18,528 bottles.HK$5,100.00 -

The Paolo Scavino 2021 Barolo Bric dël Fiasc, from a 2.5-hectare site in Castiglione Falletto on a southwest-facing slope, shows an especially rich and textured side with aromas of dark fruit that are accented by clove, cinnamon, spice and even a hint of bitter chocolate. This is a bold expression of Nebbiolo with elegantly managed tannins that are quite firm and need ample time to resolve. Production is 12,100 bottles.HK$4,255.00 -

Firm tannins provide the backbone for the 2010 Barbaresco Currà. A wonderfully layered, rich wine, the 2010 impresses for its resonance, beauty and class. Nothing in particular stands out, the 2010 is a wine of total harmony and symmetry. The Currà is quite floral, high-toned and spiced, not unlike the Fausoni, but with a little more mid-palate pliancy. At the same time, the tannins remain a bit firm, so a measure of patience is required.HK$3,615.00 -

Just a baby today, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is darkly alluring with a youthfully coy bouquet that requires coaxing as dusty earth and dried flowers slowly take on hints of incense and black cherries. It flows easily across the palate, silky and refined with building tension as brisk acidity and minerals mingle with edgy tannins toward the close. The 2019 finishes dramatically long and structured with a pleasantly bitter tinge. A resonance of salted licorice and cedar lingers on and on. Valdicava has captured the radiance of the vintage.HK$1,840.00 -

Deep ruby-colored with a light purple tinge, the 2016 Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Madonna Del Piano takes on another gear with its rich perfume unfolding with lavender, black cherry, cassis, fresh leather, licorice, fresh soil, and sage. The wine is full-bodied, with a ripe velveteen texture, while maintaining freshness, and it is elegantly rounded through the mid-palate, with notes of black plum, Earl Grey, scorched earth, and tea leaf. This seems to be moving at a glacial pace in its evolution and certainly warrants at least a few more years in cellar.HK$7,120.00 -

Luminous straw-yellow. Tangy aromas of nectarine, pineapple, apple, minty herbs and lime, complicated by a bright mineral undertone. Very precise, vibrant and dense, offering floral, captivating flavors of white stone fruit, pineapple, crushed rock and spice. The compelling fruity acidity frames and carries the extremely lifted and complex flavors through the very long finish, which features lingering notes of lemon verbena, jasmine and minerals. Along with the great 2010, this is the best Trebbiano d’Abruzzo from Valentini since his also outstanding 2008.HK$2,345.00 -

Good medium red. Ineffable aromas of rose petal, marzipan, minerals, earth and wild spices. Large-scaled, round and deep but at the same time tactile, sappy and perfumed, displaying great inner-mouth tension and cut for such a broad wine. This is in the same style as the young 2010 but is easier to view today. Really perfumes the mouth on the bracing, very long aftertaste. A beauty.HK$1,515.00 -

The 2017 Montevertine is rich, creamy and beautifully resonant on the palate. Over the last year it seems to have gained an extra bit of freshness, which is of course such a plus in this very hot, dry vintage. Montevertine is often austere, but the 2017 is unusually open today, not to mention incredibly delicious. There is plenty of tannin beneath all of that vintage 2017 fruit. Even so, opening a bottle young is not a crime by any stretch of the imagination. Black cherry, leather, sweet pipe tobacco, licorice and earthy notes develop with aeration, showing just a glimpse of what is in store for those who can wait. The 2017 is a striking wine in every sense. Floral notes reappear on the finish, adding further dimensions that will continue to unfold over the coming years.HK$2,730.00 -

The 2023 Bianco Secco is a model of purity with its bouquet of dusty florals, cracked slate, lime zest and green melon. It opens with a balanced inner sweetness offset by a sour citrus tinge as tart green apple enhances its tension. A salty flourish punctuates the experience as hints of young kiwi mix with apricot through the long and wonderfully fresh finish. This is a refined and captivating vintage of Bianco Secco, a wine that continues to punch well above its class.HK$950.00 -

In a screw-cap bottle, the organic Pieropan 2024 Soave Classico is a favorite bottle from Northern Italy for very good reason. This simple expression of Garganega (blended with 15% Trebbiano di Soave for extra richness) offers nice freshness, mineral tones and sweet primary fruit that recalls freshly cut apple and white peach. This was not an easy vintage by any stretch, but this white wine comes out fighting. The Pieropan family does a terrific job with this entry-level release of 560,000 bottles. The grapes are sourced over 60 hectares on volcanic soils, and the wine sees a brief five to six months in cement tank. The process is simple and easy, and the wine is delicious.HK$2,455.00 -

This wine always stands apart in a tasting of Etna reds. Made with a blend of 70% Petit Verdot and 30% Cesanese d'Affile (a grape found mostly in the Lazio region of central Italy), this wine has been the focus of some controversy in the past because no indigenous grapes are used, but it has come into its own in recent years. With a production history that spans two decades, it is also one of the first red wines from the Sicilian volcano to emerge with international interest. The Passopisciaro 2022 Franchetti (with just 3,800 bottles made) reveals a blackish color and thick concentration with aromas of blackcurrant, spice and tobacco. There is ample meat on these bones in terms of succulence, fruit weight and a 15% alcohol content, but the wine does gracefully hold back from feeling too over-extracted or heavy. It shows velvety tannins. It ferments in stainless steel and starts off in barrique for six months, followed by 12 months of aging in large oak casks. These are 21-year-old vines planted by the late Andrea Franchetti in double guyot at 820 to 850 meters above sea level.HK$4,810.00 -

The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino hails from lower-elevation vineyards, around 250 meters, in the northern section of Montalcino. It’s a classic, layered and dramatic wine, showing bright cherry, sweet herbs, cooling mint, dried fall leaves, tobacco and savory spice, with a presence and depth that feels more like Brunello than Rosso in character. There’s sweetness and purity to the fruit here that keeps me coming back to the glass, yet I’m sure that the 2016 will benefit from a few years of cellaring, especially as its fine tannins build toward the close. The Rosso spends twelve months maturing in Slavonian oak, and it is released two years later than most.HK$1,075.00 -
