Dauzac

This fifth growth from Margaux gives the first growths a run for its money in certain vintages, especially in the less powerful ones. Chateau Dauzac has been managed by the Andre Lurton group since 1992, and the increased attention to the fruit has produced wines that are ripe, rich and can cellar well.

Dauzac 2013 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (85)

Tasted at the vertical retrospective at the property. The 2013 Château Dauzac, a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, which had been bottled one week before my visit in June 2015, has a light, clean bouquet with blackberry, maraschino and violet scents. The palate is pinched on the entry with rather coarse tannin vis-a-vis the 2011 and 2012, missing some fruit on the mid-palate. The finish feels foursquare and rather dry. Like many Margaux 2013s, it falls short of expectation compared to recent vintages. Tasted June 2015.

Decanter (94)

Yet again it's the richness and confidence of the construction that's clear here. Sweet fruit and high aromatics take their time to unfurl in the glass, revealing a clear pliability to the tannins. It's good quality, if a touch sombre (we tried two bottles of this as there were queries over volatile acidity in the first one). A great reflection of the investments and attention to detail going on at Dauzac.

James Suckling (92-93)

This builds on the palate with medium to full body, lots of dark fruits and a full tannins that drive the finish. Shows energy and length. Precise and transparent. Could be better than 2016?

James Suckling (94-95)

This is linear and tight with beautiful concentration of tannins and dark fruit, as well as tar and dark chocolate. Full, yet racy and long. Very solid and structured with tannins that integrate well into the wine. Better than the 2018.
