Guiraud

This respected Sauternes estate has had a long and colourful history since it first entered into the record books in 1766. A tumultuous period of mismanagement on the part of the original owner Pierre Guiraud was followed by an ambitious period of promotion and reputation building throughout the early 1800s. For the next 200 years the estate gained further fame and renown as a top-tier Bordeaux estate and one of the best in Sauternes. Also noteworthy is the delicious and incredible value dry white now made under the label 'G' de Guiraud.

G de Guiraud 2019 (6x75cl)

James Suckling (93)

This is a dense, waxy white with sliced dried-apple and lemon character, as well as stone and white peaches. It’s full-bodied, flavorful and rich. I like the spicy finish at the end from the semillon. Really excellent. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Wine Advocate (88)

Tasted as part of a vertical held at the chateau. I have to admit that I was expecting much more from this vintage that was drinking gloriously ten years ago. For sure, the 1996 has a more composed bouquet than the 1995 with marmalade, Clementine and touches of brown sugar and chlorine emerging from the almost Barsac-like aromatic profile. The palate has a waxy texture, touches of spice and marmalade that segue into a tense, bitter lemon and bitter orange finish. Comparing the 1996 with recent vintages, it just fall short in terms of the complexity and nuance, but it remains a pleasurable Sauternes, albeit one outshone by the succeeding vintage. Drink now-2020. Tasted April 2013.

Wine Spectator (92-95)

This is developing some real power, with glazed peach and pear fruit pushed by graham and honey notes. There's lots of viscosity on the finish, but with good underlying acidity. 11,000 cases made. Score range: 92-95

Guiraud 2012 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (90-92)

Although there were three tries in 2012, Xavier Planty told me that all the botrytis-affected grapes were harvested in the three days period of October 29, 30 and 31, after the north-easterly wind. Nevertheless, his Guiraud has a sense of “confidence” on the nose that bodes well for the future – crisp, honeyed fruit with white peach and quince developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a viscous, effervescent entry. It has good depth and freshness, although like others it dips at the finish where it is missing a little viscosity and persistency. There are only 600 cases produced in this year – a tiny crop.

The 2016 Guiraud has a pale lemon color and opens with musk perfume, paraffin, cedar and spice box notes with a core of lemon tart, honey-drizzled white peaches and kumquat plus a waft of quince paste. The palate has beautiful vibrancy and loads of lively tropical and spicy layers, finishing very long.
