    Henri Boillot

    The Boillot family established themselves in the region in 1885, and Henri represents the fifth winemaking generation, with his son now overseeing the production of the reds.

    The winery is located on the “other” side of the RN74 in an estate that includes the Damy cooperage. This impressive facility affords Henri far more space then if he were couched in some mediaeval maison in one of the villages, which is mandatory when you have such an all-embracing portfolio of wines.

    Henri Boillot produces domaine and negociant wines from Burgandy’s most renowned growing areas. Henri is a 5th generation vigneron in the Cote d’Or. Wines of Maison Henri Boillot are produced in a cellar in Meursault and are vibrant and full of character.

    A gorgeously spicy nose features elegant red berry, Asian-style tea and a hint of violet aromas. The succulent and seductively textured medium weight plus flavors coat the palate with plenty of sap while delivering excellent length on the strikingly long finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This will need a few years to develop more overall depth but this should be seriously good when it finally reaches its apogee.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)

    A rich ruby purple. The bouquet has a flamboyant weight of fruit backed up by a certain amount of oak as well. Henri finds lime blossom, which adds a further lick of freshness to the vibrant cherries. The fruit continues on the palate long after the fine tannins. Promising. Drink from 2032-2040.     (Don't Miss!) A discreet but not invisible touch of wood sets off the notably more floral-suffused aromas of citrus confit, exotic tea, anise and white peach. The gorgeously textured large-scaled flavors possess outstanding cut and minerality that contrasts with the exceptionally dry, austere and massively long finish. This strikingly pure effort is packed with potential but note well that it's not likely to be a wine that permits early accessibility. In sum, this is a classic Chevalier in the making, but patience will absolutely be required.

    (a negociant wine, but Boillot harvested these grapes and vinified with 30% whole clusters; aged in all new barrels) Full ruby-red. Wild aromas of black and red cherry, five-spice powder and cumin. Fat, concentrated and sweet but quite pliant, with the exotic Asian spice character accenting the sappy black raspberry and cherry fruit. Sweet but lively wine, finishing with broad tannins and terrific verve.

    Saturated, bright red-ruby. Expressive, ripe aromas of black cherry, pepper, and a whiff of leather. Full, sweet and harmonious, with great lift and definition to its sappy black cherry and licorice flavors. Really compellingly sweet and palate-coating for a 2008. The fine-grained tannins contribute to the impression of precision on the explosive, vibrant back end. Boillot told me he did a selection in 2008 but that it was to eliminate pink grapes, as there was almost no rot.

    The 2012 Clos Vougeot is classic Boillot. This is one of the more explosive, dark Clos Vougeots readers will come across. Wild flowers, sweet tobacco and violets lead to a core of dark red/blackish fruit in a Burgundy that pulses with incredible energy and vitality. Wonderfully resonant on the palate, the 2012 captures the essence of site and vintage as expressed through the signature richness of Henri Boillot's deeply personal style. This is a fabulous showing.

    Bright, dark red. Captivating aromas and flavors of raspberry, flowers and gibier, lifted by a note of white pepper. Comes across as distinctly wild after Boillot's estate bottlings from the Côte de Beaune. Quite broad and round for both Clos Vougeot and the 2014 vintage, offering noteworthy freshness, pliancy and depth. Finishes very smooth and long, with ripe, fine-grained tannins and no hard edges.

    Boillot's 2015 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, which hails from the lieu-dit Grand Maupertui (neighboring Anne Gros' parcel), reveals a brooding bouquet of cassis, plum, musk and incense, framed by toasty new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and multidimensional, fresh and vibrant despite its considerable amplitude and power, with a fine-grained chassis of tannin and a long, sapid finish. This is a rich, lavish Clos Vougeot which should develop beautifully in the cellar.

There is outstanding richness to the round and admirably pure big-bodied flavors that possess impressive mid-palate concentration while concluding in a markedly firm, dusty, mouth coating and moderately austere finish that delivers seriously good length.     When the Boillots’ previous source started to bottle his own wines in 2015, it was necessary to switch to another source which seems to be equally good. Rich deep purple black. This is certainly ripe, perhaps even a gamey quality. Freshens up in the glass. Huge fruit weight here, dark notes but actually a core of pure red fruit beneath.     Vinous - Neal Martin (92)

    The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru offers ripe raspberry and blackcurrant scents on the nose. It has fine presence and detail, with the oak neatly enmeshed and delineated. With time, it develops minty aromas that are excess to requirements. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and ripe red berry fruit, with just the faintest green edge, which dovetails into a peppery but nicely controlled finish. Quite an alluring Clos de Vougeot. I would afford this a year or two in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

    A deep ruby purple. Powerful dense red fruit without detail as yet. Solid, concentrated, four-square, with no shortage of fruit, and a few tannins completing the muscular structure. Perhaps not quite as persistent as the best in the cellar. Drink from 2031-2037. Tasted Oct 2024.
