Maison Joseph Drouhin
The eponymous Joseph Drouhin founded the négociant company, which bears his name in 1880, having spent much of his early life in Yonne. His son Maurice took over in 1918, buying the first vineyards, including the famous Clos des Mouches, which we are delighted to offer below. An arduous process of expansion thanks to the nature of Burgundy’s patchwork of owners, Maurice was finally able to carve out quite the empire for his family, which endures to this day.
A titanic character in Beaune, Maurice both sat on the INAO committee and acted as deputy administrator of the Hospices de Beaune throughout the turbulent World War II. At the height of his powers, Drouhin even had exclusive distribution rights to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. However, he was unable to purchase a portion of the company, which subsequently went to Leroy.
His successor was his nephew Robert Jeausset-Drouhin, who took charge in 1957. Still maintaining a watchful eye over proceedings, Robert has ceded main control to his children (and fourth generation) Frédéric, Laurent, Philippe and Véronique. Philippe Drouhin manages the vineyards biodynamically, and as of 2009, their entire range has the ECOCERT organic certification.

Vinous (89)A group of Drouhin’s Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses was beautiful. I thought the 1985 was the most complete of the wines. It showed elements of sweet, ethereal fruit and pretty tertiary nuances. The 1990 was an especially delicate Les Amoureuses, with notable purity and inner sweetness, although it faded a bit in the glass. The 1978 Les Amoureuses offered up sweet scents of tobacco, autumn leaves and herbs. Here the fruit was a touch faded, and the wine came across as slightly dry on the finish. Chef Troisgros’s pigeon dish was absolutely divine, even if it was perhaps a touch too rich for these delicate Burgundies. |

Vinous (93+)The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is wonderfully sweet, centered and polished. Silky tannins grace the palate as this exquisite wine opens up in the glass. The finish remains long, sweet and totally impeccable. The Amoureuses is always one of my favorites here, and the 2009 is gorgeous. Drouhin used 30% whole clusters. |

Wine Advocate (95)Tasted at the Chambolle Amoureuses vertical in London, the 2010 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru les Amoureuses is perhaps the modern-day benchmark for Drouhin's Amoureuses. As expected, it is more backward, perhaps more austere and earthier than the 2009. But what completely takes your breath away is the precision, the brilliant delineation. The palate is extremely focused, an Amoureuses balancing on a high wire, a little graininess in texture with immense length. This vin de garde deserves several years in cellar, but trust me, it will be well worth the wait. Tasted November 2015. |

Vinous (91-94)Medium red with ruby highlights. Very fresh, highly aromatic nose combines blackberry, black cherry, violet and crushed rock. Juicy and tightly wound on first taste but essentially creamy in the middle palate, displaying lovely black fruit and floral perfume. Very fine-grained and long, finishing with firm tannins, well-integrated acidity and resounding savory and mineral qualities. Just a tad warm today at 13.5% alcohol but this should turn out very well. |

Jancis Robinson (18.5)So close to Bonnes Mares but so different. This is always refined, says Véronique Drouhin. Estate vines organically farmed. Picked 8 September. 40% whole bunch. Usually 7–8 barrels. Cask sample. Mid crimson. Seductively, delicately scented. Red fruits, not overly sweet-smelling, and a delicate dusty/mineral note. Refined, slim, harmonious and fresh. The length is amazing. Mouth-watering, pure and all tongue-tied on the palate but ready for a long life. |

Tim Atkin MW (96)These domaine-owned vines average about 50 years in age. A few rows are even across the road, up against Musigny. As they say, it's a desirable neighborhood. Pretty cherry fruits mesh with kirsch on the nose. The palate is equally charming, adding crushed stone minerality to the mix. Sleek tannins and integrated, buoyant acidity focus the mid-weight palate into a lengthy, perfumed finish. 2024-40 |

Vinous (93-95)The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru blossoms in the glass: black cherries, blueberry, hints of date and pressed flowers and quite exuberant. It gains intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firmer tannins than the aromatics imply, solid and quite structured with decent depth on the finish. Whereas the bouquet is open, the palate politely invites you to be patient. Good potential. |

James Suckling (94)Complex aromas of dried apples, apricots, basil and matchstick. Full-bodied with layers of fruit and a fascinating combination of ripe fruit, smoke and lemon grass. Long and very flavorful. Drink or hold. |

James Suckling (94-94)Some very attractive clarity of fruit on the nose with an array of peaches, white nectarines, melons and honeysuckles. The concentration is staggering. Very, very deep and dense with great acid drive underlying the fleshy ripe fruits. A citrus, stony finish with honeysuckles, spice meat and stone fruits. Superb. Drink or hold. |

Decanter (95)This isn’t strictly speaking a domaine wine from Joseph Drouhin, but the contract with the Marquis de Laguiche is so long that it might as well be. Showing impressive concentration, yeasty, textured weight, delightful 25% new wood and notes of beeswax and lanolin, it finishes with freshness, minerality, commendable poise and some skin-tannin grip. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2020 Chassagne Montrachet Morgeot, 1er Cru (Marquis de Laguiche) has a slightly more tropical influenced bouquet compared to the Clos des Mouches Blanc, with passion fruit, nectarine and peach skin aromas. The palate is well balanced with hints of apricot and orange rind on the entry, a fine bead of acidity with ample depth and vigour on the finish. Superb. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Picked between 2nd and 5th September. A very pretty clean lemon and lime. The oak is very well integrated into the classy nose. Plenty of energy but also light on its feet for Morgeot without betraying the appellation, and the fruit persists particularly well on the palate. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023. |

Burghound (93)The ripe and beautifully layered aromas offer up notes of cassis, wild dark berries and plenty of sauvage characteristics. There is lovely sense of underlying tension present on the reasonably concentrated and powerful flavors that also exude evident minerality on the very firm but well-balanced, complex and sneaky long finale. This is an archetypical Cazetiers of muscle and overt power. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)This comes mostly from the Combe de Lavaux sector. Dense bright balanced purple. The first nose is a little bit reticent but there is plenty happening behind, so lively with a perfectly balanced fruit and acidity, roses and raspberries, long and fine. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru, which is a new long-term contract for Drouhin, is lucid ruby in color. It has a fresh raspberry and crushed strawberry nose, touches of mint and allspice emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry. It feels well structured, with good backbone, maybe missing a little tension toward the finish, but persistent and satisfying. Give it two or three years in bottle. |

Vinous (93)The 2017 Meursault Charmes 1er Cru had been bottled in August 2018. It has a well-defined bouquet, hints of white chocolate infusing the citrus fruit, and just a touch of honey giving away the warmth of the growing season. The palate is well-balanced with a discreet spicy opening that dovetails into a pure, quite tensile midpalate. There is a sense of fullness to this Meursault, which displays impressive amplitude toward the persistent finish. This comes highly recommended. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)Full pale lemon. The bouquet is attractive with an intriguing note of liquorice. Quite full on the nose, with a little warmth as well as body, then brought back in to a beautiful finish. Good acidity. A little tension behind, needs time. A wine currently showing in two halves, but which may very well develop positively from here. A conservative score for now. Tasted: November 2021 |

Vinous (92+)Pale, bright yellow. Tight, bright aromas of lemon-lime, grapefruit pith and crushed stone. Pliant on entry, then adamantly minerally and firm in the middle palate and dominated by its structure. But this very intense, fine-grained wine really resounds on the finish. Very closed today but has the balance and backbone to age gracefully. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2021 Meursault Perrières 1er Cru is just missing a little _mineralité _and terroir expression compared to others that I tasted from this noble site. Maybe just a little closed at the present? The palate follows suit, perfectly well balanced though it just lacks a bit of verve and tension. Afford this two or three years in bottle and let's see if it has something up its sleeve. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Procès 1er Cru felt a little gawky on the nose when I tasted the cask sample. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant sharpness on the entry, delivering firm grip and a saline finish that lingers in the mouth. Give this a couple of years in bottle. |
