Vinous (93+)

(the Moreaus get this fruit from 40-year-old vines in an exchange with another grower): Bright pale yellow. Lovely pure aromas of pear, white flowers and powdered stone. Then almost surprisingly plush and thick but weightless in the mouth, with its tangy citrus peel flavors lifted by a floral topnote. This suave wine boasts impressive stuffing and energy, and its very long, rising finish is seriously tactile but edge-free. Outstanding potential here, but lay it down.

Vinous (95)

(production was half of normal in 2016; aged in 30% new oak and bottled at the beginning of April of this year): Pale yellow-green. High-pitched aromas of citrus peel, menthol, lavender and white pepper. Extremely tight without coming across as austere, conveying striking purity to its bracing flavors of grapefruit pith, lemon and crushed stone. Adamant minerality gives this very dense wine terrific inner-mouth tension and yet there's an element of leavening sweetness here as well, not to mention compelling floral perfume throughout. This wonderfully smooth, rich yet weightless wine really dances on the palate, spreading out on the unflagging back end to saturate every square millimeter of the mouth. Cellarmaster Emmanuel Hautus compared this wine to the 2009 in its combination of richness, early appeal and potential longevity.

On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with a racy spine of acidity and superb concentration without weight, followed by a long, defined finish. Surpassing the high expectations I formed a year ago, this would appear to be the finest wine produced at Bonneau du Martray for over a decade.

The 0.03-hectare holding of Domaine Bruno Colin in Chevalier-Montrachet comes from his father, Michel Colin-Deleger, whose vines were split with his brother Philippe. In 2019, he began to pick on September 13th. The grapes were lightly crushed and started in tank before being racked into cask to finish their fermentation. The result is concentrated, lemony, and fine, with an elegant line of acidity that sustains the ripeness of the fruit and brings a marvelous balance and length to the wine. Should age well.

Deep and complete, Coche's 2020 Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières unwinds in the glass with aromas of crisp Anjou pear, orange oil, honeysuckle, freshly baked bread, nutmeg, toasted sesame and iodine. I was blown away by the power, verve and soil-driven complexity of Coche-Dury's 2001 Corton-Charlemagne. Full yellow in color, it’s approaching maturity but shows every sign of a continuing graceful evolution in bottle. Its vibrant apple, citrus peel and brown spice aromas and flavors have been joined by deeper notes of brioche, white truffle and porcini. This wonderfully tactile, plush wine boasts compelling sweetness leavened by lively acidity, and the musky, minerally, slowly building finish begs for a side of crustaceans.
