France
The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.
In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.
Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.
The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.
In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.
In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.
These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

The 2016 Laniote St Émilion offers pretty, earthy red berry aromas on the nose, which is a little rustic but charming. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin; touches of black tea and allspice infuse the black fruit, leading to a rounded but, again, quite charming finish. Fine.HK$3,275.00 -

The 2019 Laniote Saint-Émilion has come together nicely in élevage. Crème de cassis, lavender, sweet spice, mocha and espresso give this mid-weight Saint-Émilion lovely flavor complexity and plenty of nuance. Laniote is not terribly complex nor structured, but it is quite attractive, especially for medium-term drinking.HK$1,710.00 -

From the immured one-hectare vineyard on the top of the hill, which also harbors the cellar of Champagne Lanson that dates back into the 18th century, the 2006 Clos Lanson is 100% first press Chardonnay from a very fine, chalky soil. It was fermented and aged in Argonne oak until spring 2007 (no malolactic fermentation), and disgorged after seven and a half years on the lees in December 2014 as Brut Nature with a dosage of three grams per liter. This bright yellow-golden colored prestige Champagne offers a brilliant nose of pure and ripe Chardonnay, along with delicate chalky flavors. Full and round on the palate, with a nice freshness and purity, this is a very elegant and well-balanced Blanc de Blancs. it has an aromatic as well as clear, fresh and mineral finish. This very first release has a very good length and characteristic mineral taste, with iodine notes along with ripe fruit and vanilla brioche flavors in the finish. This is a great new entry in the Lanson portfolio and it will improve with age. Total production is 7,870 serially numbered bottles.HK$8,980.00 -

Generous and complex, with white blossoms, citrus confit, flaky pear pastry, honey, and almonds, with a refreshing, refined minerality and salinity at the finish. This is a stunning vintage, rich and expressive while showing great finesse. Still youthful. Produced from carefully tended, one-hectare plot on chalky hill in Reims. Vinified in barrels, no malolactic fermentation. Disgorged December 2022 with 4 grams per liter of dosage. 6768 bottles produced.HK$5,565.00 -

Clos Lanson is unusual for making a vintage every year because this 1ha pure Chardonnay plot is in a warm, early-ripening location. Even visually it looks wonderfully bright, greengage/pale silver in colour, with a silky texture and fresh aromatics of apricot blossom and citrus zest. On the palate, you get quince, apricot pit, stone fruits, citrus, white truffle and honeysuckle, just gorgeous layers with grip, tension, and a natural richness that allows them to keep dosage on the low side. Full of generosity and finesse, this will easily last at least another decade. As it opens, walnut, frangipane and flaky pastry notes appear, and it grips on. First time on the Place for this wine. Tasted twice. Winemaker Hervé Dantan. 3g/l dosage, disgorged May 2022, so this will benefit from another year in bottle. They are releasing the 2009 before the cooler 2008 vintage. Vinified in Agonne-forest barrels (the only Lanson cuvée to do so), no new oak, 12 years ageing in cellars.HK$4,465.00 -

Gold-tinged color. Ginger, flowers and crabapple on the nose. Good biscuit, toasted almond and apple flavors on entry, but goes a bit flat in the mouth. Could use more freshness on the slightly harsh finish.HK$2,205.00 -

I’ve had many brilliant bottles of the 2005 Château Larcis Ducasse but it’s never shown as spectacularly as on this occasion. It’s a magical, phenomenal Saint-Emilion that couldn’t get any better. Stunningly pure crème de cassis, white truffle, white flowers, cedar pencil, and smoked earth nuances all emerge from this incredibly powerful, opulent wine that has the hallmark minerality, freshness and focus of this great terroir. Don’t miss this!HK$11,145.00 -

Tasted both at the château and then blind at Farr Vintners' tasting, the 2006 Château Larcis Ducasse is maturing nicely, far better than the Beauséjour Duffau Lagarrosse that I tasted side by side. It has plenty of ripe black cherry, strawberry pastille and creme de cassis on the nose, quite opulent for the vintage and well defined. The palate is medium bodied with fine tannin cloaked in ripe blackberry and blueberry fruit; underlying all of this is a seam of cold stone that imparts freshness and satisfying tension on the finish. This is well worth seeking out and is performing at a much higher level than the 2006 Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarosse. Tasted February 2016.HK$3,760.00 -

The 2009 Larcis Ducasse is an exotic, flamboyant wine endowed with remarkable depth and pure pedigree. Sweet tobacco, mint, pine and red-fleshed fruits are front and center. Even with all of its voluptuousness and richness, the 2009 is firm and quite tannic. Readers should be prepared to cellar it for at least a handful of years.HK$10,520.00 -

Inky purple. Sexy black fruity cocktail on the nose, complicated by grapey, smoky and vanillin nuances. Rich, dense and suave with juicy, delineated blackberry and black cherry fruit complicated by minerals and fresh flowers. The smooth finish features spicy chocolate and plum flavors. Though concentrated and rich, this wine maintains a lovely graceful, high-acid quality that provides for maximum definition of its flavors. A beautiful wine and one of my sentimental favorites of the vintage.HK$6,678.00 -

The 2012 Larcis Ducasse is gorgeous. Bright, floral and silky on the palate, the 2012 exudes freshness and class. Silky, perfumed and exceptionally polished, the 2012 is absolutely gorgeous. It may not be the biggest, richest or most powerful wine in this tasting, but it is surely among the most delicious. The 2012 can be enjoyed now for its youthful fruit or cellared for several decades.HK$6,940.00 -

The aromas here are so spellbinding with shitake mushrooms, wet earth and moss, as well as tree bark and, finally, dark fruit. The 2017 Larcis Ducasse is just as compelling from bottle as it was from barrel. Pliant and deep, with terrific fruit purity, Larcis possesses striking fruit purity and tons of resonance. Red cherry, blood orange, pomegranate, mint, spice, licorice and mocha infuse the 2017 with striking complexity as well as nuance. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this gem. Larcis is never one of the most obvious wines in Saint-Émilion, but it is often among the most regal. Best of all, Larcis remains one of the best values anywhere in the world.HK$6,460.00 -

The 2018 Château Larcis Ducasse checks in as 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc that comes from a gorgeous hillside terroir on the Côte Pavie, located between Château Pavie and Château Bellefont-Belcier. Aged 18 months in 60% new barrels, it offers a truly sensational bouquet of ripe blackcurrants, espresso roast, scorched earth, bloody meat, chocolate, iron, and bouquet garni. A massive, super-rich Saint-Emilion with a dense, concentrated, layered mouthfeel, it has building yet sweet tannins and incredible purity of fruit. Reminding me of the 2005 shortly after release, this heavenly juice offers astonishing richness and depth while staying flawlessly balanced and elegant. Sadly, there are less than 3,000 cases produced, but this monumental, legendary wine won't hit maturity for a good 8-10 years and will have 40-50 years of longevity if well stored. Hats off to Nicolas Thienpont and consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt for producing one of the wines of the vintage as well as one of the greatest young Bordeaux I've ever tasted.HK$7,950.00 -
