France
The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.
In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.
Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.
The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.
In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.
In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.
These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

Vinous - Neal Martin (94)The 2021 Musigny Grand Cru clearly has some whole cluster influence, which here is proportional to the fruit concentration. Red cherry and strawberry, cracked black pepper and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with finely sculpted tannins and just a splash of balsamic that infused the red berry fruit, dovetailing into quite a peppery and vibrant finish. Great length. A wine to bunker down in your cellar to resist temptation. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. |

Vinous (91-93)(I tasted this and the following wines in the estate's grand cru cellar, which is typically 2 degrees C cooler): Subdued but very pure aromas of black fruits. Juicy, crunchy and intense in the mouth, with a salty complexity to the flavors of black raspberry and red licorice. Finishes very long, with fine-grained tannins and a sappy flavor of black cherry. This is Vincent's second vintage for this wine, which comes from vines that face southeast but also benefit from the cooling influence of the Combe de la Serrée. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Thorey 1er Cru comes from three-hectares of vines with thte 50% whole bunch courtesy of the old vines. The nose offers dark cherries, crushed strawberry and wild hedgerow scents, fine delineation and vigour. The palate is slightly creamy in texture on the entry, quite plush and fruit-driven, pure red cherries and strawberry fruit with a sleek and caressing finish. Predesigned to seduce, this should age well in bottle. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Thorey 1er Cru comes from two small parcels that are vinified separately. The nose is perfumed with wilted rose petals and peony filtering through the transparent red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and crisp acidity. It's not complex, but there is balance and focus, plus an attractive peppery finish. An early-drinking delight. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru includes one-quarter whole bunch this year. It has a well-defined bouquet of more black than red fruit, plus touches of white pepper and crushed limestone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, cohesive and silky-smooth. Again, a little more grip would be nice, although it has plenty of charm. Drink after 3–4 years in bottle. |

Tim Atkin MW (94)Focused, bright and pretty, this is a savory, even saline, wine. There's an attractive leesiness on the nose followed by ample yellow fruits on the generous, juicy palate. Plums, sweet apples and cherries mesh on the long finish. I always find this wine delightful. 2022-28 |

Vinous (88-90)The 2021 Vougeot 1er Cru Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot was fairly reduced on the nose when tasted at the domaine and difficult to read. The palate is balanced with commendable weight and touches of tropical fruit with decent length, though surprisingly, given the vintage, it just needs a little more tension on the finish. |
