France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

Vinous (93+)

Pale yellow. Tangy aromas of ripe peach, ginger, clove and smoky minerality. Youthfully austere today, but showing lovely cut and finesse to the flavors of citrus fruit, crushed stone and flowers. With its penetrating acidity and outstanding density of texture, this extremely backward grand cru is almost bitter now and should be slow to unfold. Colin noted that his Batard vines did not suffer during hot, dry weather in August.

Wine Advocate (93-95+)

Pierre-Yves Colin's greatest wine this year is the 2017 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, which hails from a parcel of 90-year-old vines planted on the Chassagne side that he farms but doesn't own. Unfurling in the glass with complex aromas of Meyer lemon, nutmeg, honeycomb, dried white flowers, pastry cream and subtle new wood, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with a layered, broad-shouldered mid-palate, excellent concentration and a long, vibrant finish.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-99)

5 Star Wine. Ex Jean-Marc Morey, father-in-law. Pale lemon yellow. There are some honeysuckle notes but just a fringe around the massive bank of white fruit. Far less primary than Caroline Morey’s Criots, but with spectacular potential. That little touch of riper fruit remains with it but the quintessential austerity of the vineyard will carry the day. Ripe limes too at the back. Very persistent indeed.

Wine Advocate (85)

Produced largely from second-generation grapes, the 2016 Bourgogne Chardonnay is a nice wine in a challenging vintage, but it's an appreciable step behind other recent vintages. The wine offers up fragrant aromas of peach, citrus pith and struck match, followed by a bright, light to medium-bodied palate with moderate texture and tangy acids. Right now, it's a little angular, but I expect it to round out in bottle.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (86-87)

A mix of domaine and purchased fruit. Tasted after Caroline Morey’s wines, the extra depth of colour stood out. Plumper but not quite dense even so, some lemon notes, a little youthful bitterness, good length, soundly made. Tasted: October 2021

Vinous (87-89)

The 2021 Bourgogne Blanc comes from three vineyards in Puligny, Chassagne and Saint-Aubin. This is quite elegant on the nose, understated even with Granny Smiths and a hint of white peach. The palate is well balanced with a lovely texture, impressive weight for a regional white and with welcome "bite" on the finish. Enjoy over several years.

Wine Advocate (91-93)

A blend of all Pierre-Yves's premiers crus, the 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru is chiseled and concentrated, revealing aromas of pear, freshly baked bread, buttery pastry, mint and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with a long, chalky finish, it will really benefit from further élevage.

Jancis Robinson (16.5++)

Very high, next to the forest. Ripens about a week later than Les Chenevottes. ‘The Morgeot of altitude – power and finesse.’ Almost like a St-Aubin. ‘If you pick it too early it can be a bit skinny.’ He has started to pick it a bit later. Pierre-Yves says it needs hot years – like 2019? Barrel sample. Savoury nose and more restrained than Chenevottes on the nose. Still lots of rather aggressive acidity. Needs quite a bit of time.

A terrific effort, the 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ancegnières unwinds in the glass with aromas of pear, freshly baked bread, orange oil and toasted nuts. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, it's vibrant and concentrated, with lively acids and a long, elegantly chalky finish.
